"But the park is outstanding as are the facilities as one would expect for the price. £75 per night for us and our van."

I thought that must be a mistake so checked the website and it's not. surprised

So £75 a night up front and non refundable? I realise that includes admission even out of normal hours,  but normal day admission is  only £10 a person.  We have visited Portmeirion (Mrs M's aunt and OH worked there many years ago) - not sure I'd be wanting to stump up that sort of money unless they could guarantee good weather for the visit though! laughing

I’m sure those factors are relevant to certain folk. The very fact that we are all different does come into it and it would only be right to acknowledge why a suggestion made may not be helpful or useful to others.
The fact that we can, by and large, circumnavigate the possibility of lost deposits or entire stay payments may just be helpful information to some. This discussion just highlighted how this is possible and also recognised when it may be a little problematic.
I’m sure some providers, including C&MC, aren’t unduly concerned if we use such strategies discussed, a few years ago we tipped up at a site which only did minimum 2 nights stay, they were nothing like full and accepted our one night stay payment as I’m sure they would rather have some money than non. Thank goodness C&MC don’t have that 2 nights minimum stay!

I know you love Portmerion WTG, and have a long history of visiting. Not nice what happened to you. Given that there were empty Aire pitches, does seem very hard nosed.

It’s sadly becoming a much more hard nosed industry all round, is the holiday accommodation industry. In forty years of travelling around UK, using pitches and cottages, we have only ever had to cancel once (my Dad seriously ill with Sepsis), on that occasion the booked CL reimbursed us for any of our nights they rebooked. On the second occasion something went wrong, we had a cottage booked top of Sutton Bank at Old Byland. Owners phoned us, told us even the tractors were struggling, so would we like to move to another date, completely free of charge.

It did seem fairly expensive. However, it really depends on what you compare it with. Chatsworth, which we also frequent on occasions, would be £47 a night on a standard pitch for the days we have booked at Portmeirion. Also, although it is called a Motorhome Aire, the blurb says there are toilets / shower / dishwashing facilities, WiFi, Tv socket on the EHU bollard and a tap on each pitch.

We have used near empty CLs that have a minimum two nights booking, for a single night. If they are so inflexible that they can do without our meagre offering at a slow time, then fine, we go elsewhere. Same with other providers as well.
I have no qualms about popping into a residential pub after 5pm and negotiating a room price. If it’s not let by then, it’s highly unlikely it’s going to be, so I go in with the “any money is better than no money” policy, and sweeten it by dining in there as well. Hasn’t failed yet.

Doesn't really matter what the price is Steve as long as they are transparent about what you get and you accept the T&Cs. If you're happy to pay then fine, it's your money.

We've been to Portmeirion and it's unique and worth the visit. Enjoy it when you go.

I appreciate that Portmeirion at first look seems expensive but I understand it also includes access to the village? On that basis if you added the entrance fee to the Chatsworth entrance to the site fee I wonder if there would be much difference? However we digress slightly.

On the point of whether you should book ahead on a commercial site it might depend on what sort of trip you are organising. We have been thinking of a return tour of the North East. We want to revisit Newcastle (where Margaret was born) and the choice of sites close to easy public transport are few and far between. Old Hartley is not too bad in that respect but it seems that there will be some refurbishment work on the toilet block so not sure if that will impact on whether the site remains open (haven't really investigated) We did discover a nice small touring site in South Shields, a short bus ride away from the Transport Interchange that connects to the Metro. As nice as it is to book that we risk losing the site fee if something goes wrong close to arrival where as Old Hartley it would only be the deposit. Perhaps I should be more positive in thinking things won't go wrong but having been bitten twice in recent years I am a bit cautious.
