Can anyone advise me how I go about insuring a smart car on a trailer (towed behind the motorhome.  All quotes I get say the car is only insured while on the trailer as 3rd Party! Please help

I would imagine you need to read the wording carefully.

If you tow anything, then the towed vehicle, be it a trailer, caravan or car would be covered at a 3rd party level by the towing vehicles insurance.

If the Smart Car has it's own insurance, which I trust it would, then it would be covered to your chosen level.

    Thanks Colin,

Unfortunately the car insurance will only cover 3rd party!  It seems crazy so many motorhomes now tow small cars I am surprised there isn't an easier route to get the car fully insured when being towed!

When we did it about 15 years ago, the MH, trailer and car were all fully covered. Sadly I can’t now remember which policy covered the car fully comp when it was on tow on the trailer but I’m tending towards the car policy rather than the MH policy.

One poster has recently had to claim for car damage when A-frame towing. If he sees this, he might be able to throw some light on things.

Tim, you could try Adrian Flux. They have a reputation for being helpful when it comes to anything that is not the norm.

I think Comfort insurance will have also come across this problem before and should be able to provide two comprehensive policies for the two vehicles. I hope this helps.
