RFU World Cup
After a good win for France against NZ last night, there have been relatively easy victories for Ireland, Italy and Australia today. This evening's game was supposed to be a close match. With England's Tom Curry being given a red card within the first 5 minutes it looked as if they were up against it, however George Ford has worked his magic and with 27 points sunk the Pumas. What a victory!!v

I've enjoyed watching the matches (and there have been plenty of them already, much to Mrs M's disgust! ) - but I have to say I've seen nothing yet to change my opinion that the other code, the 13 man game, is a much more entertaining watch. The seemingly constant kicking for position (and points in England's case yesterday), the slowing down at line-outs and set scrums and now the ridiculous caterpillar rucks tactic has, for me, taken all the excitement out of the game.
I'm currently watching Warrington v Salford - all square with a minute to go and the lead has swapped sides so many times and a golden point to come! 👍
But, in fairness to the OP, yes, George Ford had a magnificent game and hopefully will keep his place in the team, no need for spoilt brat Farrell.

A good weekend for all the four home nations. The Ireland/SA game must be one of the finest seen for a long time, a proper test match. England were ok and showed quite a lot of flats although they were playing the lowest ranked team in the competition. Scotland won comfortable in the end but they fell well short of what really was required because of too many unforced errors. The extent of Wales' win was, at least to me, unexpected. They p!she's well but Australia were as poor as I have ever seen them, with very little idea of how they were meant to play.
Roll on next weekend and some more important games.

What has gone wrong with the Aussies? I’m delighted with the rise of the Pasifika nations and the island boys returning to their cultural teams, maybe to the detriment of the ABs and Aussies, just a thought! Good to see those second tier nations having their moment but the big games are coming, maybe an upset on the cards!

Another cracking game tonight, doubt that the result tomorrow will be as close.

Another big score this evening, with Darcy Graham running in 4 tries (so far). It could well be an interesting encounter when Scotland face Ireland.
I was surprised how well Georgia performed against Fiji, but were just not able to keep the Fijians out for the whole match.

Scotland played well, as did Romania at times but afraid i got a bit bored half way thru the second half when it became so predictable, but yes Scotland vs Ireland should be a cracker.
did not watch Georgia/Fiji, OH was awake and clutching the TV controller

A couple of predictable results today, but both Tonga and in particular Portugal impressed against high class opposition.

Some question the inclusion of lower tier countries in these pool stages of the World Cup having witnessed some rather one sided, large scoring games. However, what an experience, what learning opportunities and what a showcase for individual up and coming young players who may just be spotted and go onto make in to the big time teams. Fantastic performance from Portugal, some tell me Spain are in actual fact a better side but they apparently blotted their copybook in the lead up and were disqualified also the USA blew their chances and allowed Chile the experience . I’m all for the minnows having their moments.

Wow, well done the Portuguese, beating the team England will now face in next weekend’s quarterfinal. I think, on present evidence, England would struggle to beat Los Lobos. The Fijians I fear will lick their wounds and come back and haunt us.

The quarter finals present some very interesting matchups, the pick I suspect will be France against the Springboks.

Well, one up to the Southern Hemisphere so far. Wales shot themselves in the foot today, giving away so many penalties and spilling the ball so often. Argentina played well too and deserved the victory.
Off to watch Ireland/NZ now which should be another close matchup.

Yup England need to put Fiji to bed if we are to have a home nation to shout for going forward. Wales and Ireland should have won their games, but both splendid games some terrific rugby towards the end of the Ireland game. Come On England

Cracking games both, Argentina looked the better measured team and that All Black defence was phenomenal, in the last 10mins Ireland threw everything at it but it remained intact.
Now England must overcome that Fijian do or die spirit. As for France, I hope they roll on but in the hope they are not the only NH team in the semis. I’d take a draw over this weekend’s results in that NvS ‘competition’0 -
Sorry to rain on their parade, but I do think England will be the dullest of the semi finalists, whoever wins the final quarter tonight. They have been fortunate to be drawn in the weakest group (wasn't it getting on for 2 years ago?) and some of their tactics have been shocking. I'm fed up of caterpillar rucks, box kicking and, today "gamesmanship" in running down the clock at every opportunity. And something should be done about Owen Farrell's constant haranguing of the referee.
The best you can say is that they haven't been beaten by the mighty Afghanistan!
Looks like the final may well be a repeat of the opening game and the way the All Black's have come on strong during the tournament who would back against them?

Your comments Moulesy are nonsense (apart from caterpillar rucks - which are being banned soon) and you obviously don't understand the game of Union. The reason for kicking is for territory and inviting the kick and chase tactic. Last weekend we were treated to 4 magnificent games of rugby - the likes of which will probably never be seen again. It's because of the introduction of League players and coaches into the Union code that high tackling has become prevalent, dangerous and requiring a change in the laws - Union players being, in general, bigger, taller and stronger. Fact.
Instead of trying to 'rubbish' the game, try (excuse the pun) embracing it and understanding it. Yes, the All Blacks look strong, so too the 'Boks and it will take and enormous effort for both England and Argentina to make the final.

"and it will take and enormous effort for both England and Argentina to make the final. "
cruised thru, great weekend of Rugby, not going to be easy but England were written off before the tournament began and look where we are now
"but I do think England will be the dullest of the semi finalists, whoever wins the final quarter tonight"
cant agree with this having watched every second, i thought they put in a brilliant performance, after all everybody thought Fiji would be a walk over but they put in a brilliant performance and tested England to the last second.
I am traditionally a soccer person but now finding rugby much more exciting than watching £2million a week duffers kicking a gas bag round a field for 90 minutes, and dont mention time wasting when it comes to soccer

I agree with Moulesy that England have been very lucky in the draw. I didn’t expect them to win the quarter final, tbh. I wish them well in their semi with my fingers firmly crossed.
Farrell’s inconsistency lets him and the team down at times and I don’t think he was missed much during his suspension. George Ford filled the gap excellently and didn’t let the clock run out!
NZ surely have to be the favourites now.

M has a point, up until the last match England have been pretty much a one trick pony using that kicking game in armoury for some time. The reason why the caterpillar is to be outlawed is because of the part it plays in this tactic, it buys rime and give protection to the kicker, usually the SH. Now the games this weekend have seem some brilliant alternative tactics being employed,

Hopefully not too difficult to decipher my last post but basically what I’m saying is that the very best coaches do their research on the opposition and find tactics, some novel, to beat them. England have been so predicable in recent years with the kicking game, they now need to be creative and find those specific tactics to beat SA otherwise we will be ‘Faffed’ like we were in the final of the last World Cup. Faff used that kicking game then to its best advantage but I’m not sure that repeating it over and over again, by either side, will be the best approach, for players or spectators alike, this time judging from what I saw last night.
Oh, and the powers that be recognise the boring nature of the ‘kicking game’ so have moved to ban the caterpillar. The 50-22 is also a good addition as it requires precice kicking not just a hoof up and chase. That idea came from RL. What about the goal line drop out! The jury is out on that rule.

Jonray - in my (much younger!) days I played a lot of rugby, both codes, so I've got a fair idea about the rules and I do know what I'm talking about! I'm certainly not rubbishing the game - the 4 quarter finals were all fantastic entertainment. But I stand by my comments about the England team and I think even the hardiest supporter would be pushed to rate them ahead of any of the other 7 teams involved for entertainment and flowing rugby.
I don't understand your comments about league players being the cause of high tackling, don't think many of the cards given have been against former league players have they?
I do agree that the 50-22 rule has encouraged accurate kicking and the drop out between the posts is better than yet more set scrums.
But, good luck to England - they'll need it against the springboks. Can't see anything stopping the All Blacks now.

High tackles existed during my RU playing days but that definition of a RU high tackle has change in recent years for very obvious reasons and these have absolutely nothing to do with RL.Yes, the RL definition is slightly different and probably better in my opinion and certainly more like I experience in my Union playing days of yesteryear..

After 4 closely fought and thoroughly entertaining quarter finals I think the better side won in each case. However I cannot envisage England beating the Springboks, or the All Blacks looking either, so it will be a Southern Hemisphere final, but what a contest that should turn out to be!!

Miraculous efforts and outcomes do happen in rugby. I could name quite a few instances and these are very special and one reason which makes rugby so appealing for me. Now it's England's opportunity to put in a real Herculean effort and prove us wrong, you just never know it could happen. Winning is sometimes in the belief that this is just possible.

The All Blacks are scarelyq good tonight, The Pumas were poor in comparison. Whoever wins tomorrow night will have their work cut out to beat them next weekend.

Words fail me too, Nellie! 😉 The ABs were phenomenal, will that suffice? Even though it doesn’t do them justice! Don’t recall the Pumas actually breaking through their line of defence. If England don’t win tomorrow they won’t be coming home just yet but will have to play that unenviable third place game against an embarrassed Pumas. Let’s hope they do win mind but what a monumental effort will be needed to beat the ABs!
