I have just bought a new leisure battery and find that the 12volt system in my caravan does not work when it isn't plugged in to 240v, only the motor mover works. Surely the 12volt system (ie lights, pump etc) should work when disconnected from the mains power, shouldn't it? Any suggestions?

Hi Phil When you are plugged into the mains are you getting a charge into the battery?

I think you are getting 12 volt from charger when plugged into mains not then battery if this is the  case & no charge to battery there is something wrong with wiring from battery to van 12 volt system  You can check with a multi meter to see if charge going into battery

If this not the case get back & we can have another think

    Cheers Robert

Did it all work properly with the old battery?

Thanks Robert. The caravan is sited in Shropshire at the moment and I wont be back there for another week yet, but I will try your suggestion then. But because I was never away from a 240v mains supply, I had never tried the 12v side of the electrics with the old battery. The old battery had definately gone dead though because it got red hot and there was a smell of rotten eggs seeping into the caravan. It was only when I replaced the battery that I decided to try 12v electrics. But like I say the motor mover works on the new battery but nothing else works.

The motor mover will be working because it is powered directly from the battery. Thus your battery must be holding a charge.

Have you checked the 12 volt fuses in your system? If the old battery was in such a poor condition it may have blown a fuse/fuses. I am quessing that they are all OK as you are able to use your 12 volt equipment, but you never know.

One other thought, and not wanting to insult you, have you connected the battery correctly? There are batteries out there that might have the + and - terminals on a different side of the battery to the one that you removed.
