To hedge or not?

After staying on campsites abroad with hedges in between pitches we've decided we really like this idea and would like to see more campsites in the UK do the same.

Would you prefer a hedge around your pitch? I would suggest something without thorns and to a height of approx 4ft. This would be just enough to give a little privacy without feeling excluded. It might also help attract more wildlife to stay on the site
as well.

I'm aware that some sites do have a few pitches with hedges, Whitewater being one example, but would you be in favour of the club planting many more hedges on our sites?

A lovely idea.  Two of our favourite sites, one here and one abroad, have them.  Very nice, and they act as wildlife corridors.

As the original post is over 8 years old I don't think the idea caught on with the club.

However I do agree with the idea of hedges. I don't suppose many wardens would as it would increase their workload but they do have their advantages. They help wildlife, act as a natural windbreak, promote a sense of privacy etc.

Here is our last stop on a CL that has just that concept.

It's actually a selling point of the new Premium pitches which have appeared on some refurbished Club sites that they have privacy hedges, they weren't around eight years ago! Personally I would like hedges between pitches just from a privacy point of view. It would also make no difference whether your neighbour drove or reversed into a pitch as you wouldn't be able to see themsmile

Well they have ripped a lot of the hedges out at the Hillhead site and replaced them with wooden fences

Best hedging we ever saw, and used, was on our favourite Cornish CL. Granite covered with turf, wildflowers and small shrubs smothered each one. Pitches were huge, you pitched however you wanted. Maintenance was a once a year trim for walls.

Using hedging on some Club Sites would be a big challenge in terms of parking for some, and possibly another irritant if the hedges were trimmed with the same voracity that grass gets on most Club Sites. That said, do prefer hedged pitches, but only if they are spacious and you can pitch how you want to.

Hedges yes but not formal ones clipped to an inch of their lives. I much prefer a mixed hedge.

We do look for hedges when arriving on a site, I like to pitch next to them as others say to give a bit of privacy. It also helps wildlife and I think it makes the site nicer more attractive less like a car park.

There lots of sites that have some form of hedging not necessarily between every pitch but quiet often just to break up a long section.

Hi, we prefer more open sites, without hedges and fences. Currently on North Ledaig near Oban, which is one of our favourites, as an example.

The OP mentioned White Water Park, this is a picture of one of the hedged serviced pitches. I don't know what others think but I reckon that WWP is one of the best designed Club sites on the network. There is no cutting through pitches to get to the toilet block so someone has at least thought about that.

+1 David. The hedges tend to make sites much less like car parks IMO.

Here is an aire that is part of a real car park, but the addition of hedges (and the larger spaces) changes the character of that section of the parking area. This particular one is just a few hundred yard from a lovely village.

Also, one of our favourite commercials uses hedges to create smaller, more intimate, 6-van, sections breaking up what would be a much larger area.
