Yesterday we were in JL buying a few things and at the till Margaret was struggling to get her My John Lewis Card out of her purse. The lady on the till suggested put it in her wallet on her phone and showed her how easy it was to use. Today I had a play around with my own cards and loaded both JL and Waitrose cards into Google Wallet and it worked. So I thought perhaps I should try my CMC card and again it worked without issue. Despite previously saying I would prefer the card perhaps I will get used to flashing my phone?

During COVID, we made a concerted effort to familiarise ourselves with more tech, particularly what our phones and iPads are capable of doing. We have used online shopping for a very long time, adopted internet banking a good few years ago, and now are both making good use of all sorts of useful, and in many ways life changing Apps. I wouldn’t describe either of us as interested in technology that much, but there are just so many ways nowadays to make routine things such a lot easier, and a good deal of the “chore” of certain things has now been reduced. The more you use stuff, after learning, the easier it does become.

Like TDA started to use Google pay during COVID and now we're addicted so to speak. In fact I can't remember the last time I took my real wallet out. In fact I have to keep reminding myself what the PINs are.

Also at the time daughter number 2 was doing her rotation with Barclays fruad and call center, she said that illegal and furad use from phone cards was very low. In fact it was mainly family and 'friends' who knew your PIN. Now with finger print unlocking it's even better.

Our membership renewed while we were away in France. I thought the cards would be at home as has happened in the past. Nope, no cards so I checked 'my profile' and there it was. No I won't bother asking for cards to be sent out I'm quite happy with it on my phone.

Do you use Strava when out on bike Corners? We have found it very useful, not only for recording our cycling details, but it also has tracking setting, so you can pair up with someone left at home who can keep an eye out if movement stops for any prolonged period. It’s certainly useful for us if we go out alone at all. Another you might be interested in, particularly if you just want to keep fit in bad weather is Rouvy.  (sorry for digressing a bit)

I do have it but mainly use Garmin connect with it's mapping and routing and all my stored routers, then it connects with my two Garmin devices, the cycle computer and the wrist watch while about and then it's there on the computer when I get home. Just have to remember to give the activities meaningful file names!

To be fair I am not quite sure what the correct date is. Looking at the App there is a difference between the date I joined and the renewal date of about two weeks but in my favour. I did join in 1981 so I don't know if some system change along the way has caused this?

I am quite happy with the digital cards...being called a tech geek for more years than I can remember I am very happy with all things digital and certainly looking forward to AI...as is my wife who uses her iPhone for virtually everything and who commented recently to her sister 'How Quaint' when she pulled out a cheque book.

However, if the club is saying that going digital is for 'saving the environment' then they should apply that logic to all paper based products ...The magazine would be an excellent starting point as it is already available online...also the hand book/map together with the overseas brochure....all available on line. (ok there may be the odd member who doesn't do/want to tech stuff)....and, like our sister club offer a 'Digital membership'

All very nice IF you carry a smart phone around with you everywhere ?  I prefer not to,  and I carry cash . I find that gives me more choice and I am not forever verifying everything with texts to prove I am who I say I am.

I am not a Luddite I wouldn't smash my smart phone  I use it as a tool  But neither am I slave to it.

I use it for MY benefit not just to save Companies to whom I do business money.

I think most of us use it to our benefit rather than anyone else’s and they do a lot more than operate as a payment system.

I prefer not to carry much in the way of cash, although I do carry some. The phone, watch or contactless card suffice in 99% of places. Although the shop where I get the granddaughters gingerbread man 😂 is still cash only. I don’t know why you are forever verifying everything. For me that only generally happens with online purchases and occasional large unusual ones. I like that, it’s easy enough to verify in the App and it keeps my money secure.

I generally carry a £10 or £20 note tucked away somewhere for ‘just in case’ reasons but I gave up carrying coins long ago. I remember the weight and the way they wore through pockets. Plastic or the phone wallet win for me every time on the grounds of convenience. 👍

Likewise I use the digital cards for my convenience. One phone and I have money, maps and routing, the internet, and (most important for me) a camera always with me - I don't need anything else.

There used to be a time it was a wallet, phone and camera and I used to run out of pockets!

I don't think I am a slave to my smart phone but it is a very handy tool and even handier if you have it with you most of the time. The alternative view of it being to a companies advantage to use your smart phone is that it is also convenient for the owner of the smart phone. Like my example above do I wish to get to the cash desk and hunt around in my wallet for some loyalty card or do I use my phone. We shop every week in Waitrose and every week they send us money off vouchers. I could print these off and present them at the till when paying or I could take a screen shot and use my phone at the till instead. So I think the convenience between who has the advantage is a bit blurred. It sort of reminds me of the uproar when companies started offering better deals if you paid by direct debit rather than the then usual monthly or quarterly bill by post. At the end of the day we all have to decide what is most convenient to ourselves but that only lasts as long as we have a choice?

This post reminded me I had done nothing about getting my physical card. I thought I was the last dinosaur in Britain not to own a smart phone. When I followed the link in the email to order one I found the CAMC computer couldn't cope. I had to ring to order one. Apparently there are many dinosaurs in the CAMC. I am not alone! Keep chopping down the trees a little longer please.

Texts are way gone. I use fingerprint or iris recognition. Watch wallet is even better-a twist of the wrist👍🏻. It isn’t for everyone for sure but life is so much simpler.

    SteveL says....

"I don’t know why you are forever verifying everything. For me that only generally happens with online purchases and occasional large unusual ones. I like that, it’s easy enough to verify in the App and it keeps my money secure."

some banks certainly do require verification for some online purchases.

I don't get this very often but did recently as we had several large transactions in a month. The choice seems to be text message, call to fixed land line or verification via a specific app using Touch ID on my iPad...(the phone has Face ID).

I had to do a purchase for my dad and he never shops online, although the purchase was only £30 odd, the transaction needed verification. Again, text, landline or app....but was also offered option via card reader.

OH doesn't have a smart phone and had a lot of issues with online transactions and now has a card reader for verification. This is never used as 'I just use my card'....which hardly ever requires verification.

In my experience, despite having touch and face recognition on my devices, certainly (the option for) texts are not yet 'way gone'.

Some (many?) folk still use phones which don't have Touch and Face ID features and will be 'verified' by text or code over a landline.

Those that have just received physical cards - how long are they taking to arrive?

We ordered our cards on the 3rd and nothing has arrived yet, 9.5 working days later! We have had post most days this week.

I have followed the email link again and it says we have recently ordered them, so they are in the system I hope.

Can anyone tell me what happens if we want to go to a site before the cards arrive, we have always been asked to show it?

My husband and I don't use smart phones...not everyone does!

AKDL I guess you just have to show the version of the cards that you have at present, and explain the situation. I am sure the site wardens/managers will be able to confirm your current membership is up to date on their computer system

In the past I have always received the cards some time in advance but that was before the new system. It depends whether you will be going to a Club site before the new ones arrive? I have always been asked for my membership card. Make sure you have the old cards, surely the site staff can go into their systems to check you are still a member, perhaps JK could confirm?

Another option, I assume you have posted this from a computer? Go you My Profile at the top of this page, which shows your membership card, and print a copy off. I would have thought that would satisfy reception. If you are using a tablet just take that with you as you will be able to show the membership details on that.

    Morning

If you don't have a current membership card the last issued one should be fine. Some sites may ask for an alternative form of ID ie a driving license. It does make the checking in process a lot longer though.

A good idea as DK mentions about printing your details.

Environmentally I'm not convinced by digital cards, not least as "smart phones" need charging and the more they are used the more power they need.

Additionally I don't have a suitable phone and choose not to, as I like not being constantly able to read emails, social media where ever I am, that's a personal choice. (I have had suitable phones in the past)

Making everything digital is actually not a good more for human mental health and not good for the planet as it requires vast amounts of power to cool and maintain the storage required.

So I was a bit shocked to get an email of membership renewal, telling me we had asked for this, wouldn't it be better to give members the option like with paperless billing?

If anyone is looking on here, using social media, able to send emails, it’s very likely you have a device (phone, tablet, kindle) capable of storing an electronic card. In many ways, it isn’t about the tech you have, it’s more about how you choose to use it.

Emails will still be sent, particularly those deemed important. The decision is really about whether you do or don’t read them. The choice, and consequences, are personal, so as an example, I have those deemed important sent to my “in box”. Most others go to “junk”, quickly scanned then Deleted User without a full read. Unsubscribe is also easy, as is avoiding “click bait”. Self discipline.

At some point, certain aspects of life might be withdrawn if they become obsolete or too costly to retain. Classic example for me, it’s now cheaper to deliver my local Xmas cards (proper ones, not electronic) than it is to post them via snail mail.

I didn’t grow up with technology, but learned to use it a bit at work, then a bit more as I realised just how helpful it could be, and cutting out some of my personal dross time wastage. Ten minutes to do a big shop and have it delivered, then into garden for pleasure, or an hour and a half of drudgery around a supermarket…….  Choices.

AKDL, go up page and click on “My Profile”. When that page opens, click on “edit my profile” (green box, next to avatar). When that page opens, scroll down, and your membership details should/will be there. If you are using Club Together, you have registered, and it should be there. Good luck😁

I continue to receive actual memb cards.

It won’t be a problem not having a card to show at Club Site reception, staff will be able to check. Likewise, even if a CL insists on seeing card on arrival, there is a system they can use if you don’t have plastic card.

Not on the App, as long  as you check it is in a logged in state when you set off. Once logged in it generally seems to stay that way for several weeks, but worth checking.
