    BB, you’re getting quite excited about something that is only early stages of a trial. You don’t know what factors CAMC have considered and I certainly don’t. Might it not be best to await feedback from users, or even try it for yourself?

    You wanted metering to give you the non EHU option and now CAMC are working towards that but seem to be in a lose/lose situation with you. 😕

    the papers are full of articles about folk not being able to work smart phone based parking meter apps...

    I don't think full is true at all. I've not seen papers full of such stories, perhaps one here and there but that's newspapers, they will focus on the stories that makes headlines rather than the majority of such folk that just use smartphone and the rest of the tech quite well indeed.

    But even so rather than using these folk in these full articles to base what happens on club sites the important question is:

    How many of these folk not being able to work smart phones are actually towing/driving MHs and then going to a club site.

    I wouldn't extrapolate the folks in the articles to those on club sites, what I see is on club sites is people on phones, using laptops and computers and in the offices I've been in all showing their membescard through their phones, and well as many having already paid before arrival. If they can do that then they can cope with what's required here.

    I would leave it to those that actually use club sites and those in the trial.

    As a person who would have doggedly stuck with my trusty horse and cart long after cars with infernal combustion engines were introduced .How will a 'non Smart phone carrying '  Member Get their EHU when they get onto site ? Remembering that I STILL have to show Members  how to 'twist turn' their EHU plugs to turn on power???

    Methinks they are 'assuming'  too much.

    Those who struggle with technology are most likely the older generation. They probably won't have more than 10 years left in their touring days anyway so the Club cannot afford to be held back by them and their perceived lack of smart phones etc. 

    Most elderly people I know are very up to date with facebook/whatsapp etc.

    Surely that’s what the trial is setting out to establish. If there are a lot who can’t cope and the site managers have to sort out the connection of services for them, then clearly some sort of rethink will be required. However, personally  I don’t think that will be the case. I suspect the number who can’t sort it out will be very small indeed. 
    I’ve always found members on site very willing to offer help / advice if folk are experiencing difficulty, as am I. Therefore even where difficulties are experienced, these can most likely be sorted out in that manner.

    Oh I find it’s fairly easy to get caught out by the twist and turn EHU plugs, now so many have been replaced. I was wondering why I wasn’t getting any power a while back, only to realise it was the twist variety.

    Rose coloured specs-me?😂😂. I based my post on common sense & experience in a wider field rather than just one trial👍🏻. I prefer to see results after a trial period, proof of success or failure. When Bezos & Musk was setting up day trips to space I remember folk bad mouthing it as stupid, it won’t work, who will pay?-it wasn’t stupid, it did work, it has paid. I waited for the trial period to end before deciding.

    Not a wise thing to do in making an assumption when you have had no input into setting up the trial and it's objectives. If you want to make observations on how you would manage an EHU Metering Trial then that is different. Just my thoughts and happy for you to agree or not.

    Can’t use a smart phone? My OH for one. Fine on his Mac pc at home, but if takes a lap top away invariably has some issue connecting to internet.

    As Age UK have said many older people are not good with mobile technology like phones. Key boards too small, screens too small.

    I think I read somewhere (probably on this website) that the second trial would be using a different system.

    The connection issues (I've never been troubled) are irrelevant as they will be there no matter what device one uses to access the internet while away from home.

    The smart phone angle is a red herring in this case anyway, as other devices (with larger screens) can be used in this trial and used at home before travelling, just like booking a club site really.

    And many? Depends on what definition of many and how many of those many will be using club sites?

    But again I don't perceive there will be problem for most, no matter what the age, but the trial will show that one way or the other.

    There are certain parts of the printed press and I suppose I would have to add some YouTube Channels that see any move forward as a negative rather than a positive. Its the same when you can no longer pay for something in cash but did those same channels during COVID complain when when it was suggested we avoided using cash as a means of infection control? There will always be a small percentage of the population that can't handle technology but I suspect that percentage is getting smaller every year. As CS suggests there will be an even smaller percentage of Club members in that category. The proof of that is surely that the majority of members interact with the online booking system and how far is that removed from using a smart phone? As the years go by those that can't cope with technology will become smaller and surely the Club has to plan for the future?

    Presumably you use a smartphone, Hja. My OH isn’t good with them due to lack of interest rather than lack of ability but I do what’s necessary for both of us.

    I'm 74 so reckon I fall into the 'older' category 👴🏻🙂

    Nope. I have a smart phone because that is pretty much all you can get. Use it for phone calls, very occasionally, and the occasional text. No email. Internet only in emergency because it costs too much. I think there are three apps on it that I use, one for the car charge point, but once set up doesn’t change (had to change my email address on it the other day, absolute nightmare, key board far too small) and two apps associated with the lithium battery, only use one, don’t understand the other.

    Use my iPad for stuff like this but windows pc for most stuff.

    I simply find no need for a mobile phone, smart or otherwise.

    Your last sentence contradicts your earlier statement, Hja. You do use your phone so you have a need.

    You have an iPad and by picking up wifi could use that for site EHU purposes. As has been said, it matters not what device you use but on the availability of signals.

    Incidentally, I pay £7 p/m for a phone package which gives me 100gb of data. It’s cheap as chips and I can tether my Pad to the phone for easier use of a bigger screen and keyboard if needed. Tethering is so simple but if I do stick with the phone, a stylus makes the small keyboard much more user friendly.

    There are ways of doing most things if one wants to.

    I would tend to agree on the ease of use of a smart phone re keyboard size. However, if I was changing my email address or sending an email I would use my iPad as everything is much bigger. The beauty of the smartphone is its small size, it fits in my pocket when out and about much easier than the pad.

    If you have an iPad there won’t be an issue, it will run the App, or connection web site exactly the same as a phone. Just connect it to the free WiFi on site, or tether to your phones 4G as TW suggests.

    Tether. What is tether. As for 100gb I am lucky to use 1gb per month as I find using a phone for internet very stressfull. It puts words on that I never typed, sometimes I hit 2 letters at the same time and the one I wanted is never the one that comes on screen. As for the stylus well I find I have to press that hard on it, I nearly go through the screen. 

    I have only ever been on one metered site, that was in Germany. They read the meter from the office and I paid up when I left.

    Good to hear from someone whom has actually used the trial smart meter system. - H1UBS (page 44). Agree it appears to be a ‘faff’ . Not something I personally would want to deal with when away spending a few nights at different sites.

     It couldn't be any simpler ..... find Mobile hotspot on your phone & go from there. As TW says above, your phone then becomes your WiFi provider
