Holidaying with Dogs

We have joined the CCC this year for the first time. As it so happens we have stayed at three of their Club sites. Many units have had dog(s). But not once have we been disturbed by yapping/barking dogs. On one occasion the warden told owners to ensure dog was on a lead, even on the pitch (quite right). I know others describe the CAMC as a branch of the kennel club, for the number of dogs found on sites. One of the reasons we are reluctant to even consider CAMC sites is that every time we have visited a site in recent years we have been disturbed by yapping/barking dogs. And yes, on occasion we have commented to the wardens, but it doesnt stop.

We have been using CAMC sites extensively since 2005 and I can only remember a couple of times where we have had a real cause for complaint and we resolved those ourselves. OK you get the occasional escape attempt, one that’s prone to bark a bit more than others, however in general nothing significant. What I would ban on site is those extending leads, particularly the fine wire variety that you can’t see. They are just dangerous. I suppose in a way they are currently banned, as the regs specify a 2 meter lead, but this does not stop there extensive use.

I did speak with the wardens and they were aware of it they told me the club had no limit on the number of dogs someone can bring also in my experience west highland terriers are notorious for yappers, as I understand there is a club leaflet on guidelines for dog owners on site that should be given to the owner on check-in I have never been asked if I have a dog, I am not a dog hater or attacking dog owners and I think any reasonable person would think 5 dogs for one unit is too many, there should be a sensible discussion to be had without all the outcry.9

The wardens were correct in that there is no limit to the number of dogs per unit. However, the dogs in question were causing an annoyance and that is the crux of the matter. The warden failed by not addressing that issue and you therefore have grounds for making a complaint to CAMC as per Ro’s OP. As she said, this thread is not the place to complain.

" ... I think any reasonable person would think 5 dogs for one unit is too many,"
We were staying at Chatsworth one year when a chap got out of a MH each morning with 5 husky type dogs, attached them to what looked like one of those wide belts that weightlifters use, and went off walking with them - the dogs were clearly well trained, no pulling, no barking, couldn't be better behaved. On the same stay, just opposite to us a couple decided to go off cycling for the day and left their one dog in the van where it howled and howled all day - so much so that I went to let the wardens know that the dog was clearly distressed. In the evening the warden came over to have, shall we say, a full and frank exchange of views with this couple who were packed up and gone very early the following morning. So, no, although I wouldn't dream of having 5 dogs with me myself, especially in such confined quarters, I don't think you can make a blanket statement like that. I think "any reasonable person" would probably prefer to be pitched up next to those 5 dogs than next to 1 badly behaved or 1 being left unattended.

It’s a bit like asking which sites are good for families. It depends very much on personal preferences and needs. If it’s ‘facilities’ on site for dogs the we have to appreciate that brings cost into the equation, be it for installation, maintenance or just upkeep like mowing or emptying dog bins. Even those tiny costs these days seem to be significant in the bigger picture.

There is no such thing as a bad Dog. Whereas there are many bad Humans who should never be allowed to own a Dog.

Chatsworth is a popular site for dog owners....I posted on here a couple of years ago that there were more dogs on site than humans and I also maintained a lost opportunity by the club for another source of income....and before anyone says that dog owners would go elsewhere if charged....go where ??.

Of course there are some bad dogs.

Dogs are allowed to be bad by the owners. We don’t have Dogs in this country without owners. They are collected & put in a Dog pound. Rehomed(owned) or euthanised👍🏻

Wouldn't it be nice to go back to the days when multiple dog ownership meant those having 2 or 3 dogs. I cannot understand why the CAMC doesn't stipulate a maximum number? How much income would they lose if the number was five this year and four in 10 years time.
Please don't bring children into any response.

I agree with you 100%👍🏻

Like DD, Moulsey, Rocky and myself you are a non-member, Mikey, so it matters not what CAMC do regarding numbers of dogs or charging as far as we're concerned but it’s good to be able to help those who aren’t aware of how the system works regarding bringing issues to the attention of CAMC. I’m not quite sure what you’re getting at, tbh, but it’s good to know CAMC is a dog friendly organisation, don’t you think?👍🏻

When we used CAMC sites we have on occasion been bothered by other people's dogs, generally this related to constant barking or yapping.
On 2 occasions it was a neighbours who had left a dog in their unit and gone out for the day. Like M, we had a word with the warden as we were concerned about the dog.
On one site we were sat outside when a unit turned up with 6 small dogs, I remember saying to OH this could be noisy. How wrong I was, the dogs were show dogs and we're perfectly behaved. They did get excited when going for a walk but other than that nothing.
Its not the dogs at fault its the owners that seem oblivious to their yapping.
Years ago on the site at Forfar we were outside talking with the warden, we could all hear a dog barking. The warden apologised, then went over to the unit and had words. We hadn't complained about it but he clearly heard it and wasn't having any of it.

Former (and even never been) members have always been welcome to contribute to the forum, Arch - it's one of its great strengths IMHO.
I don't comment on direct club affairs any more but with over 20 years past experience of club membership I feel I have ample reason to comment on events when we were members and offer advice where it's relevant. I still have a look at sites when we're away in this country and make recommendations on the "small private sites" thread, for example. Nothing wrong with that, surely?

I think Moulesy has said it well, Arch.
Actually, if you read my posts here, I haven’t been giving my opinion but have been using my 20 years membership experience in an effort to guide you through the process of getting the annoyance you complain of dealt with. Therefore, I find your post quite astounding. 😤

Like Moulesy's post earlier on today we too have experienced multiple dogs that were well behaved (7 going to the Sandringham Game Fair on a CL) but also 7 next to us at Yellowcraig that were a nightmare.
I think over a long period of time caravanning it's only to be expected that you are going to get occasions when a dog or dogs are a nuisance but I have to say that considering the vast number and variety of dogs that we've spent time with on all sorts of sites we have not been unduly troubled by them.
Again like M we did have to warn the wardens of a dog left in a caravan on a hot day that was showing signs of distress and the wardens duly gave the owners a rollicking when they returned and they packed up and left the site.
All in all dogs haven't been a problem on sites for us. Now some owners....

Sorry for astounding you TW I didn't mean to, I can assure you I have enough experience in complaining through official channels if I need to and often find you get the usual corporate answers with no action, its far better sometimes to open it up to the wider audience and debate preferably in a calm and positive way.

Even though you’re specifically asked to do otherwise by the Community Manager?
You apparently have not followed the issue through in the recommended way, Arch, and that is why I have been posting to you here.

I too left CAMC recently but continue to post. I hold a few people on here in my heart & also have a soft spot for CAMC. In the not too distant future I have young folk just coming up to double figures who love the outdoors(mainly woods & forestry) & I will be rejoining to open the CAMC network to mainly 3 of us but occasionally 4. A new chapter beckons👍🏻🙂

Thank you D. It was always going that way. Right now I’m more into my solo trips & forestry. If it goes to plan it’ll be back end😊

Lizzie, our Cavalier King Charles, still enjoys coming out it the caravan with us and is absolutley no bother to anyone.... especially as she is now 12, and spends most of her time sleeping...
She's found a spot in our new van. . 🤣🤣
