Enjoyed David Baldacci’s recent book Long Shadows featuring Amos Decker also read Andrew Taylor’s Ashes of London and picked up The Fire Court. Hopefully will be able to continue with the rest of the series from the library ‘though may have to order them. Will be looking out for Act of Oblivion by Robert Harris. Have 2 books on their way to our library for me one of which is a Sally Spencer book featuring Monika Paniatowski a detective novel having read and liked others featuring this character.

Have read another JL Carr book, probably familiar to many from the film of the same title " A Month in the Country." Beautiful story, short but well crafted. I haven't seen the film so can't compare. I'm now on to another JL Carr "How Steeple Sinderby Wanderers Won the FA Cup" you don't have to be a football fan to enjoy this tale.

For anyone looking for a new mystery/detective writer I can recommend Jane Harper's Australian "Aaron Falk" series. Strong storylines, great characters and brilliant description of the locations - He is primarily a financial investigator but seems to get tied in to more traditional crime situations. The books can, theoretically, be read in any order as they're all separate stories (there are 4 so far) but it makes sense to read them in the published order, starting with "The Dry" to get a real sense of the characters. Definitely worth a read.

Missed that, and I see today that it is back up to £4:99, as is The Dry so I will give them miss for the time being.😁

Fans of Stuart Macbride's "Logan McRae" series will love his latest offering "The Dead of Winter" which introduces a new pair of completely mismatched detectives! This author has the uncanny knack of combining the utterly gruesome and the absolutely hilarious within a couple of sentences! If you've never read any of his books this would be a good place to start as the characters are all new. It's described as a "stand alone" at the moment but there's plenty of scope for this pair to get involved in more mayhem so hopefully this will be the start of another series.

Cheers, M. I'll keep a look out for him👍

The first 6 of Caro Ramsay's Anderson and Costello series are available at the moment on Kindle in two box sets at 99p per set of 3, a real bargain, unlike someone's MWD!!

The 18th in the John Connolly's Charlie Parker series, The Dirty South, is at 99p for a short while on Kindle!

We've just had a few days away, so I treated myself to two new Kindle downloads.
Alan Johnnson's two fiction books. "The Late Train to Gypsy Hill" and "One of our Ministers is Missing". Both enjoyable - but not "can't put downable". I struggled a bit with the first one - a lot of Russian names to remember!

I assume that is the Alan Johnson of Government fame? If so his autobiographies are good especially his first one, This Boy, which will be meaningful to those born around the end of the last war.

I've just picked up that latest offering in Martin Cruz Smith's "Arkady Renko" series - he's a Russian investigator. Looks good at first glance and very topical with early mentions for Putin, Zelensky and Ukraine. Always fa fascinating read.

Yes got that one too!
For anyone who like their detective novels with a dark touch the first in John Connolly's Charlie Parker series, Every Dead Thing, is at 99p on Kindle at the moment, but not for long. I can thoroughly recommend the whole series, but they do need to be read in sequence.

Any history lovers might like A Brief History of Mutiny by Richard Woodman. Tells the tale of all sorts of (mainly British) maritime mutinies, starting with the likes of Columbus and Magellan, and onwards through to the 1970’s. Bligh of course gets a mention, but he was a pussy cat compared with some. Good companion reading if you like the Hornblower and Aubrey/Maturin series of novels.
Got my copy for free, swopped for another book at a CS😁

I've recently discovered Kate Rhodes' "Locked Island" series, set in the Scilly Isles. We've never been but the descriptions are very atmospheric and the islands sound appealing. Typical easy reading detective novels, good for holiday reading.
And I've finally got round to the second book in Richard Osman's "Thursday Murder Club" series. I try hard not to be impressed by celebrities who turn their hand to writing but I have to admit he's got the knack for accurately describing "old folk" reliving their glory years! Very amusing and, again, good for light holiday reading.
