Isn't that typical, glad you've sorted temporarily and found a replacement. I thought you were based in the far SW, isn't Cambs, Cambridgeshire a long way to go to collect?
Shorts and t-shirt today? If you're coming to Cambridgeshire might I suggest winter clothes? Frost hasn't cleared from the shade for at least a week 🥶🥶🥶🥶

Yeah, we're in north Devon but we originate in Cambs so a good excuse for a stopover night at the brother in laws, he cooks a mean chili and if I'm not driving the next morning there will be wine. Good quality constant run transformers don't come cheap, it's worth the fuel and the time.
I'm still in shorts, no t shirt though! 90% of my life since we started doing this job is outside, I love the fresh air. I do suffer though with poor circulation in fingers and toes so often I wear two pairs of gloves!!
Funny, reading the posts above, we're having sausage egg and chips tonight

Just watched the local news and weather. Coldest night of the year, well since 2013,in our region. -10 at Stanton Downham overnight and wow 5 during today. 🥶🥶🥶🥶
Similar temperatures expected tonight and tomorrow. Biggest and best bonus has been beautifully clear sunny days. Hopefully we'll avoid the freezing fog again 🤞

We had a fabulous day yesterday, went back to do a tour round my old college, at Wentworth Woodhouse. Small group and two ex student guides who made it very interesting and brought back lots of memories. I got to go back into rooms I hadn’t seen for over 40 years, including a bedroom I once slept in, and the wonderful library, where I remember studying for my exams. By the time we got back to the Pillared Hall, the place was alive with visitors of all ages, some looking around the house, another tour, and folks just calling in on a walk to get a coffee in the cafe.
Bedroom, derelict, but to be renovated. I slept here😁
Guides in the cloaks we all had to keep warm walking between lectures between House and Stable block classrooms (and the Bar🤣)
Beautiful stained glass artwork, commissioned by Ex Students Association
Bedroom done out as it would have been for students, four to a room.
Photo of my 2nd Year, with 1st& 3rd years as well. I am not on it😁

We had a bit of a stroll with pooch before doing tour, photos show views over parts of Estate and a couple of the monuments. Then a couple of interior photos….
Hoober Stand Monument. Dower House is below it, another place where students had rooms.
Looking at the House, hockey and Lacrosse pitches were between fence and House.
Looking down into Marble Saloon from top of gallery walk.
A beautiful crystal chandelier in another one of the State rooms.
Looking over Estate to Fitzwilliam Mausoleum in distance. To the right, out of shot are the three lakes, and footpaths, estate road that leads to one of the estate villages, where my Grandfather was born.

Our cold weather has gone for the time being, the last 2 days we have had grey skies and mizzle but it is warmer. I prefer the blue skies even if it is colder.
Not up to much as still can't work outside due to the damp and wet ground.
Was going to go to Dunfermline today for a day out, got as far as just beyond the Broxden roundabout when the car started to make a funny noise. OH slowed down until we identified where it was coming from. Front left wheel it sounded like. We had it in the garage the other day for work on that wheel, a new ABS ring was required. No choice but to get to the next turn off point and back to Perth. Back at the garage they could not find anything wrong with the car, took it for a test drive and the noise has stopped. Will have to monitor it over the next few days but as we both heard it we know it definitely had a noise.

TDA. Having enjoyed the Black Diamonds book you recommended about the Wentworth estate I can well imagine you enjoyed returning to your old college, what a setting! I had the misfortune to look up my old student accommodation on streetview to find the rooms had been turned into flats and the nice rural outlook over fields had turned into shops and car parks....so I won't ever be going back!
We had very low temps here before Christmas so I sympathise with the chill elsewhere, it seems to get through everything. We are slightly warmer, -4C tonight and the worst of the sheet ice has melted.
Did anyone take part in the electricity reduction this evening? Although we fixed our dual fuel for two years, which ends in July, I was shocked at our recent bill, due to British Gas introducing a new web site it's difficult to compare previous usage, it's all missing from the system at present.

They do a Black Diamonds Tour Brue. Anyone really interested could easily spend a whole week in the area looking at all the Fitzwilliam history. House and Stable Block would cover two days, then there’s all the monuments scattered around, the Estate itself, the villages and churches, Elsecar Heritage Centre, and then there are the Grouse Moors at The Strines. Second richest family in England at one time. Some great walks.

What a lovely day for you Ttda. Like Brue I shan't be returning to my last place of education as it has also been turned into, expensive, flats. Mind you I think it was the best thing for it.
Tough luck for you Tammy but you can't take chances.
Nothing much happening here. Might get out tomorrow to do a bit of birdwatching. Have to see how things go.

Looks as if you had a super day out yesterday, tda, and some great photos. We will have to try and get on one of the tours next time we are are over that way. When are you heading down to Oxfordshire, hopefully after the very cold spell has passed, and are you staying at Newton Grove, as that is a site we have talked about visiting?
I wouldn't be making a specific journey to my last main centre of education as it is now a housing estate!
It was a shame that you had to abort your trip, TG, but better safe than sorry. Hope that the noise is not being caused by anything resulting in major damage.
Brue, we have taken part in the energy saving experiment for a few months, being with Octopus Energy, but the savings have only resulted in a miniscule cash discount. Perhaps that's because we are never at home!!😄
We have had a couple of damp days now so not much of interest happening. Both OH and I have just about got over our colds and OH managed a walk of about 1.5 mls today without too much pain, so a steady progress. F!year had an upset stomach since Friday, not being able to hold any food down, but seem to be over the worst of it, so it is small light feeds for him until we as sure that he is back to feeding normally.

Sorry to hear about Flyte, nth, hope he is soon better. Makes me think, though - you remember that Meg was sick over Christmas - resulting in that trip to the Emergency Vet's on Boxing Day. She was at the groomers, yesterday - and Jo (the groomer) told me that she knew of at least 15 other dogs (not all her 'clients') who had been ill in the same way, over Christmas. Wasn't it about this time last year that there was that scare about a disease being picked up by dogs on the Yorkshire coast (turned out not to be true and dogs were suffering from it all over the north - not just after being on beaches). Strange.

Yet another grey and miserable day here. Not too cold, but cold enough to need the heating on in the lounge when sitting, so gas bill this month is going to be ridiculously high. No sun to generate electricity from the roof, so electricity bill is mounting too.
Our "in home device" which was supplied with our smart meters refused to show the gas use until it suddenly started doing so a few days back, over 2 months since installation. Now we can watch both bills mounting, it is all rather depressing! Our use is well down, but total costs have more than doubled.
OH is threatening to hide the thing!!
Off to the garage to work on the 3 small Iroko countertops for the new bathroom, OH is agitating for it to be finished.

Another cold day -4C again with heavy frost and freezing patches. However the sunrises have been spectacular and the sunshine is good.
I don't think I'd look at energy consumption too much, I know it's costing a lot (after seeing the last bill ) but at least less people are wasting it. I was chatting with friends yesterday about the cold experienced in our youth, we have been so lucky to have power on tap.
Hope you get your jobs done Kj!
Nellie glad to hear you are both getting better, hope Flyte is OK too.
B2 I expect you'll enjoy seeing the hard landscaping transforming your surroundings!

Freezing here, beautiful blue skies though. The frost on the pavements in the shade hasn’t gone so decided not to risk a slip so no walk. Lots of cooking, dinner in the slow cooker and lots prepared to start cooking curries for the freezer after my lunch break. Even walked very carefully down the garden to fill the bird feeders it’s that slippery. Poured hot water on the bird bath but I think it’s already frozen again.
Phoned Granddaughter, just for a catchup. She’d been for a morning lecture and was heading off for a meeting, hot chocolate in hand and motoring her wheelchair through Plymouth I thought it best not to speak on the phone for too long, thinking of the juggling act she was doing with this and the phone as well and avoiding other pedestrians. I phone her less often now as she has settled so well, is busy and has made many friends. Despite a few blue light trips to hospital we don’t worry quite so much now, she is so determined to achieve her aim and we are so proud of her.

I think the little Smart Meter display is quite interesting, especially when used in conjunction with the Hive App. It helps you when you experiment with lowering temperatures. I have dropped ours by half a degree since I last mentioned it. I am not yet convinced that lowering the thermostat actually makes much difference. Ours is now set at 18 degrees from morning until mid afternoon. If its cold, like it has been, it still kicks in at regular intervals so I am not convinced I am using any less gas! In effect the Government has given us an additional £700 this year (we didn't qualify for the Council Tax reduction) which I reckon will pay for December and January combined bills without any contribution from us. Our bill for January last year (dual fuel) was £169 so I imagine that is at least going to be double this year? Let's hope that during 2023 energy prices will start to fall.

Apologies DK for another "elongated post". Figured out what is happening with my new Android tablet.
Cold, overcast day but not much wind so we headed out to Burton Mere RSPB reserve to do a spot of birdwatching and have a pleasant flat walk. Extremely pleased with the walk and my arm/hand experience. Nothing unusual to see at the reserve but it was my first trip out in 3 months so I wasn't too worried about the birds.Still enough variety to make it worthwhile.
Something positive to report to the Head Honcho when I see him on Thursday for a 3 monthly check up.

We've lowered our to 18° too, David.... but we do keep ours on from 8am to 1am - we're always up late!!! Overnight its 15°. We've also switch the boiler working temperature down too.
Then, we're taking part in the 'reduce the use of electicity and we pay you scheme' which Octopus and (I think) other companies are running. The earnings are only very small, but at least it gives us the 'focus' opportunity. There's one on this afternoon between 4.30pm and 6pm.... so all electric appliances, internet, TV and lights are off (the only thing we've left on is the fridge and freezer. While this is going on, we've come out shopping. Carol is in M&S whilst I am in the car writing this!

Grey start to the day here but it did get a bit brighter before lunch for a couple of hours. Not as cold as it has been.
Our CH is set to 18c during the day then 20c when we sit down for the night. Comes on at 8am goes off at 21.00 no heating overnight required. Just checked our usage over Dec/Jan readings is down by half what last year was but its still going to cost us more.
I see that those of us that are not on mains gas for heating and hot water are to get a further £200 towards winter fuel costs. Should be paid into our electricity accounts in the coming weeks. This payment is for anyone who is on Oil, LPG, Biomass or coal. Shame its not been paid into our banks rather than our electricity supplier. We are so much in credit now I will have to give them a call and ask them to pay some of it back into our bank, we will be needing an LPG deliver soon.
I've been checking the holiday insurance we have against lots of others, what a mine field it is. Bottom line is we are still better VFM using our bank account than buying stand alone policies even when we add on age supplement, long stay supplement and pre existing medicals.

Oue energy supplier pays the gov pay out into our account. Maybe that will happen with your payment TG? We get through most of the day with the heating set at 18C then a bit higher till the last one goes to bed. It's always off till the first one gets up. I've spoken to people managing without but it must be very cold just now.

collected the new tow car this morning 66 plate Volvo XC60 but only 30k on the clock. So far so good it feels a lot more modern and upmarket than our V70 although the cream leather seats will need to be kept clean. Lots of new gadgets to get used to including the in built sat nav. Looking forward to getting away in the van now hopefully get away near the end of next week for a couple of nights weather permitting.

I remember that from last year too, R&R, so it looks as if it has spread across to the NW. Flyte seem to have got over it now, thankfully, and we have been fortunate not to have taken him to the vet. Thanks to all who have expressed concern.
OH has a tooth break off when we were away, but as she was in no pain from it she waited till we got home before contacting our dentist, which she did yesterday. This afternoon she saw the dentist and now has another two appointments over the coming week, one tomorrow to get the remains of the tooth extracted and other to repair a couple of fillings and any other treatment she might need. Great service from our Denplan dentist.
Good to read that you were able to get out and do some birdwatching, WN. You would not have been able to see much up here as we have had misty drizzle all day.

Hi Nellie😁 We are away tonight. Had a nice scenic drive down mainly Fosse Way, a walk at Burton Dassett CP, then onto Upton House to pick up my new bike from Head Gardener🤣. Great little eBay buy, OH will work his magic on it, and I will have a nice road bike to try and keep up with him. We are parked up behind a pub in Gaydon village, roomy, quiet and free😁 Mind, we did have a lovely meal in pub. It’s -2c 🥶at the moment outside, but we are snug as two bugs tonight. Pooch is happy as well. We are back home tomorrow, but not before a good look around Gaydon Church and the Motor Museum, so a lovely little break. Sorry to hear about Flyte, hope he is mending up ok. Give him a hug from us. Regards to everyone else as well, no wifi here, so just a quick look in👍

Wow we woken to 2c no new frost, but grey 🙁. We'll be back to mud, already mucky underfoot 😪.
Can't actually remember when the cold snap started, but over a week ago, as I didn't write it down.
I note there's lots of 'scaring' regarding another beast from the east next week...
No workmen today as brickie poorly 🤞 for tomorrow.
Mad jumping of spacing once again - as I cut the cursor leaps about all over. Using a android phone
Bakers 2 I have edited your post to bring the text together. I am not sure what is happening, I could be wrong, but I would imagine it is likely to be device related, something like a stuck key? Anyone else using android having the same problem? David

Sunny here for a change, hoping it lasts over tomorrow too as I have to make a trip to Aberdeen, for the funeral of a former work colleague, so very sad.
Today we have done a huge Aldi shop for DD....her weekly shop plus extras and cake making supplies as it is Nathan's birthday party on Sunday, he will be 2 on the 31st.
She has ordered sandwiches, nibbles, and pizzas from Morrisons, so it could have been worse!
SIL has a large extended family, think there will be at least 25 guests.

Bright sunny day with some clouds around, mild though so I managed a couple of hours in the front garden. Only the bits I can reach from the grass and path. The garden is very wet with bulbs popping up so don't want to step on it. Nice to be working outside.
OH is busy in the MH, our shower room sink tap needs changing, apart from being stuck solid the chrome over brass finish is wearing off. It's a fold away sink so the tap needs to swivel sideways to close the sink up.
To buy a new tap for it costs £70+ however you can buy a similar one for £20 but it's a bit to long for the shower room sink, the kitchen sink is the same size of tap so I suggested that OH remove it and fit it in the shower room and put the new tap on the kitchen sink.
He's done the kitchen one, now working on the shower room sink. Not an easy job as everything has to be dismantled. Pipes come through from the toilet cassette then up behind a cupboard which then feeds into the back of the sink. I have a feeling it's going to be a long job.
Brue, our £66/67 payment from the government goes direct to our electricity supplier, who hold onto it. If our electric bill for the month is less than the payment no direct debit is taken, if higher just the balance is taken. The extra £200 will also be paid into the electricity account, not sure yet if they will hold onto that or pay it back into our bank. We are in good credit so no real reason for them to hold onto it.
Best go out and see how OH is doing, he may need refreshments 😅

Sounds good, the XC 60 is a nice car.
I think our Touareg has plenty of life left in it yet, so we should not need to buy another tow car, but we are looking to swap our Smart for something a bit bigger and more practical, more or less settled on a VW T-cross. Might go and take a look on Friday afternoon, take the boys with us to give Mummy peace to make Nathan's cake.
Francis.....is it you that often goes to Low Moor Head CL? If so, can you remember what they charge for their metered electricity?
It says on their website that units above those included in the price are charged for, but does not say how many units are included in the price, or how much any extra units are charged at.

There does seem to be several different ways that the various suppliers are handling the £66/67. Our lot take the usual DD, then send us back the £66/67.
As we have cut down our use of electricity, and the new gas boiler is more efficient, we built up a lot of credit over 2022, so OH rang and asked for most of it back, better in our bank than theirs! They kept 1 months DD, and we got about £940 back.
I think this months bill will be high, but having paid another DD last week, there is still plenty credit to cover it.

Funnily enough my new Android device is a Samsung and its happened twice to me, again only on this forum. Have to keep an eye on it. Good luck with the building project.
A day which always seems slightly out of kilter. Things not going according to plan but not too much to worry about. Mrs WN called on at last minute to run MiL to crematorium (no, we didn't buy the budget funeral service plan.😂 MiLs original chauffeur phoned citing illness so couldn't make it). That type of out of kilter.
Just had a good long conversation with brother in France. Reminds me that I must renew our GHIC cards

Minus 6C here this morning everything outside looking pretty with the frost on it but cold out side and we had fog first thing and it looks like it is coming back so nothing done outside, just a few inside chores, hopefully will be warmer in the next few days still minus 0.8 C outside.
Glad you are improving WN and hope your meeting with the medic goes well and that you had a good trip to RSPB reserve, wish me luck I am going to a local LPO meeting re biodiversity for the Commune of Lalbenque on Sunday as it looks interesting so OH will be coming his French better than mine, as I do not belong to the RSPB anymore OH gave a birthday treat for membership of the LPO which is turning out to be quite interesting they do not have the clout like RSPB have but are doing more protection for wildlife.
brue can you tell where your latest photo is many thanks.
Glad you are getting things done Bakers2 and it will look good when finished.
