Membership Cards and Sites Directories

Funny (in a good way) how this was wandered off into books v electronic devices.
If I have to learn something new then it's a book and paper, to highlight here and there and make notes with. I suppose it's just the way I started. If I have to do a 'desktop review' of a school I'll print anything I need out, though I'll type anything up.
Reading I'm into both, we have a whole large bedroom room full of bookcases with them (was a child's bedroom but we now call it the library) but I'm probably more into Kindle as it always remembers where I'm up to, it has all my books on it and I can find one easily and I can still read if I've misplaced my glasses, and of course its library is portable but books are still first, in fact if I really like a book I'll have the real and on Kindle, and of course when given or received as presents they become more far personal often with a treasured dedication either by the author or giver. I'll give a real book as a present but wouldn't dream of giving a Kindle edition. One of my best memories is seeing an original Newton's Principia up close.
I've already posted this holiday about maps.
But it's horses for courses, in booking a site or holiday it is in my view far easier and quicker, certainly more up to date, to use something online than something similar to a club handbook.

Well having contacted Head Office via email and confirmation and reply to do not send Site Directory 2023/4 it has arrived at our posting address in UK so OH has told them to recycle it as we have different options on what to do with the post and it would have cost quite a bit to send here. Heyho not a happy bunny and cannot be bothered to contact HQ again.

I think you can check via your profile on the club site that you are recorded not to receive handbook. Hope that makes sense. I assume the directories were sent out by some mailing company so they will have been given the addresses some time ago, maybe before you notified the club.
With some organisations when you change options or details they tell you that it can take 14 days (or similar) before it might come into effect. It’s a pity the club emails are not a bit more nuanced and actually reply to what you have told them. So in this case it might have been necessary to say they had already authorised despatch.I’m just guessing of course.

Profile preferences don't always get through to the relevant server, as I found out this time last year. I e-mailed the club to query why I wasn't receiving monthly newsletter by e-mail. After various staff members checked my profile settings and said it was selected (each time someone checked I received an e-mail to say my settings had been saved). Eventually I received a phone call in March when I was setting up on site to say he had found it wasn't selected on the server that dealt with newsletter e-mails and did he have my permission to change it? Obviously the servers aren't talking to each other as the should. I am not the only one who's had this problem, as other members have reported the same.

brue yes we do know about that as seen on UK news and we are not expecting anything at present, I think you put a link re contacting HQ which I did and did get reply 24 hours later but as everything was updated but not the request re Sites Directory as said earlier it will be recycled as we do not need it anymore only looked at the old one twice in 2 years.
Thanks Hja as you say it could have been sent by the time HQ got back to me, hopefully it will not be sent for 2025/2026 seasons.

I have just requested cards as we all do not have the latest Gismos. The old Nokia I have for an emergency does not do "apps" whatever those are! Also, I caravan for the peace I find out walking in the hills, no phone needed.
I believe the club assumes too much!

Unless there has been some change I have missed, there is no need to request membership cards, they will be sent automatically. Although you can opt out of receiving the site directory in communication preferences. However, perhaps that will be an option in the future, given 88% of the population own one and even 78% of over 55’s.

Our membership renews on 1st June, not far away now, but no new cards have been received as yet.
CLs may well expect to see a current card, so I have downloaded a digital one just in case. Also for use on any money saving offers while we are away.
I thought new cards would be sent out well ahead, certainly CCC send theirs at least a month ahead.

No idea on that, ours renewed in January and we were sent cards along with a letter saying they would be taking the direct debit of X pounds. Surely even if they are not sending out cards they have to inform you of that, particularly if there has been an increase since last time.

Yes you do.
I've just recently renewed by credit card and in the reminder letter where the card would have been stuck was the following info.
Membership Cards have gone digital
'Inspired by member feedback and supporting the Club on its journey of acting responsibly to protect the environment and the great outdoors for future generations.
You can still order a physical membership card free of charge at camc.com/cardrequest
or by phoning 01342 336776'

I contacted the club in March with regard to my card showing a finishing date of Dec 2022 in my Google Wallet but the correct date in the club's app. The last correspondence from the club with regard to an upgrade to sort out the issue was in mid April, but just checked tonight and nothing has changed! Now why didn't that surprise me!!

We recieved an email saying renewal was due 31st May and membership cards had gone digital, but we can request a physical card from 1st June by contacting them, so that will be the 10min 'we value your call but we are busy ignoring other members right now - please hold or go online' phone call. There is an online process.
The increasingly faceless steps of club membership.

Got the email (annual renewal) giving a link to order a physical card(s), you tick which members of your family you want physical cards for, and guess what -
We've been unable to process your request at this time.
Please try again later (I have) or alternatively call our contact centre on 01342 318 813
In the meantime you have instant access to a digital version of your membership card within the Club App. (No I don't, as I don't want the app)
Well next time they ask for my membership card they can sort it out. Another very poor example of IT management.

Interestingly today received another similar email but with a subtle change of wording from the previous one:
Physical membership cards are still available on request for your renewed membership from the 1st of next month.
From the 1st of next month you can order a physical card here >>
Alternatively, you can request your card by phone 01342 336776.So now cannot request until 1 July, also the phone no has changed!

I suppose the Club are depending on the majority being happy to use the App to confirm membership on arrival at a site. Personally I prefer to have a proper card rather than fiddling around with my phone. The Club must feel it saves them some money by changing over to this method? However if a significant number of members request physical cards I do just wonder if it wouldn't be better to just keep sending them out each year. I suppose the Club get some feedback from the actual sites on the numbers re cards v app?

Surely if they wanted to gauge how many didn’t require the physical card, they could have given the option not to receive one, as they have with the site directory and magazine. They even sent me an email about the site directory, suggesting I might like to go digital, however to date the only mention I have seen about membership cards not being sent out is on CT. Personally I will continue with everything, requesting a card, unless they are going to offer a discount as I get for my C&CC digital membership. Even on that membership you currently get a physical card, although that may possibly change now they also have a digital version.
I suspect if the CAMC do anything re a digital membership, it will be to charge extra if you want a site directory and card.

Forward thinking organisations offer discounts to save them money going forward, others put objects in front of us to save them money. It’s different strokes like that where some companies excel & others plod along. I pay extra for peace of mind & positive customer focus👍🏻

Of course the big flaw at the moment with any digital offering, is that the App is nothing but another way of accessing the web site. There is no offline functionality, other than displaying your membership card. The old App worked off line, so a big step forward would be to get the new version to do the same. The email the club sent suggesting I might like to go digital, specifically mentioned using the App instead of the directory. As you need exactly the same internet or 4G access as for the web site, this seemed a strange suggestion.

Ones we get from other organisations are eco friendly, not containing any plastic. Can’t the club do the same. Agree re My wallet for the card, I have as many as possible in there.
Just checked our English Heritage ones. It says now made from100% degradable, compostable or recyclable material.
