I've never worked the overall costs,  I think if I did I would sell up.  If we can afford it then that's all we need to worry about.

Of course we see prices going up but that's life.  I'm careful what I spend,  I don't waste money never have.  On the other hand if I want something and can afford it I do.

As to record keeping,  I do keep a log of where we've been along with a few details like price of site,  weather,  good for cycling,  satellite signal and numbers of pitches I deem good ones.

This year I kept a few more details as I wanted a comparison to the UK.  I used last year sites record in the UK but with this years prices.

It worked out that the cheaper sites in France more than paid for the cost of the ferry and the extra days that I had to add onto the holiday insurance.

Other than that fuel was cheaper,  LPG,  cheaper,  food around the same price.  Going out was cheaper as lots of attractions are free or very little cost compared to UK.  Parking also was cheaper or free.

I doubt I will bother again as I have satisfied my curiosity.  I do know that I can get 2 extended holidays abroad compared to 1 two week cruise.

I don't take into account the cost of the outfits,  we could afford them when we bought them,  when we sell them the money either goes back into the bank or towards another outfit.

Like most who have commented we never calculate the cost of running our caravan; if we did we would probably sell up and arrange different types of holiday.  It is not the cost it is the style, freedom etc that attracted us to caravanning all those yrs ago (50 approximately).  When we were young, and tied to school holidays, yes we had to holiday within a budget but now we are fortunate not to have to worry.  If I am bored I sometimes press the button to see mpg and will try not to fill up at a motorway service station (splash and dash would be all I would do).  We are off to the South of France next week, all I know is that I have paid nearly £500 for the ferrysurprised.  Other costs no idea and don't really care we are on holiday.  However, as I put all holiday costs on one card (no o'seas loading) I do know that our 6 week holiday to Italy cost us £2400 tunnel was thanks to Tesco points - so £0!!,  plus say €100 cash spent so at approx £210 per head per week quite cheap; and we came back with a few bottles of wine and some beer within that costcool.  OK Insurances, depreciation etc etc etc on top of that but who cares!

Budgeting is important, but I'm more interested in enjoying my holiday that working out to the last penny what its costing me. If we can afford a trip, we go. If we can't afford a trip, we don't.

One things for sure though, I have no desire to be the richest man in the graveyard.

Although I do keep a spreadsheet of number of nights away, average daily site fees for the year, mileage towed etc etc - it's just for interest and not intended as any sort of cost control exercise.

I'm in the "if you can afford it - do it" camp and I dread to think what the real cost of caravanning would be because I'm one of those who likes to collect 'toys' - like my new mifi system that I'm using at the moment and the electric towel rail I installed a few months ago. If I started including all those things, I really would frighten myself!!

Totally agree.  Glad the new WiFi system is working out for you.  OH has bought a double antenna thingy to go with our mifi.  Tried it at home and appears to work well,  our signal here isn't great normally.

Now,  electric towel rail just what I need for the caravan bathroom 😁 the blow heater is useless, by the time it reaches the far end of the van it's practically cold. In winter I do take a small portable radiator but one fitted would be much better. 😉
