Rosslyn Chapel

Our latest trip to Edinburgh got cut short as the rains came and soaked what we had left of a week at the Fringe.  Nothing new there I suppose; I remember freezing to death one evening in August at the Edinburgh Tattoo? Scotland is famous for rain and so I suppose we were not disappointed.

The first three days at Edinburgh Club Site though the weather was spectacular, apart from the Jets flying into and out of Edinburgh Airport a walk along the beautiful espanlade to Crammond with a view of the Firth of Forth and its islands is something to behold.  We managed a couple of days in the City absorbing the atmosphere of the Fringe, a tour of the City Vaults and a half day spent wandering through the Botanical Gardens. The number 27 bus takes you from just near the caravan site right onto Silver St. and the buses run every 20 minutes usually. £1.80 per ride payment by card or cash.

Having seen the Falkirk Wheel several times and those magnificent Kelpies I was struggling to think of a day trip in the car, until I remembered about Rosslyn.  I first visited Rosslyn Chapel just after reading Dan Brown's "The Davinci Code"  It was on a miserable wet day and I had been working in Scotland and decided to call in out of curiosity.  Unfortunately It was shut!  It was also a ruin and it had a huge scaffold thing overhanging the roof to keep out the wet.  Not knowing what to expect I suggested to my wife we take a look together and it would be her very first visit to Rosslyn.  Boy, what a transformation!  The chapel had had a huge amount of restoration and drying out done and they have built a superb visitor centre with reception, a really nice cafe and the obligitory gift shop.  I wonder if Dan Brown is aware of what he has created by using Rosslyn Chapel for the Finale in his book?  Later made into a movie of course.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosslyn_Chapel

So, if you are visiting Edinburgh Caravan Site or just passing by along the A72 bypass its not a huge detour and it is well orth a visit. You could even take a copy of the Davinci Code to read on your trip. There is a small caravan site there and plenty of parking space. However, if you do wish to go then book up a time slot on their internet site, we didn't but were lucky enough to get squeezed in by a nice lady on the desk.
