Wild Camping at Black Knowl
Black Knowl lost all electrical power from 20:00 until the early hours of this morning. There has been ongoing work by SSE at one of its local sub Station and we were made aware of a 30 min outage this afternoon when we checked in. I accept that the club isn't responsible for the delivery of power to the site, but what it can do is inform the people on site what is happening. The loss of power resulted in the facilities block being closed and the service points not able to dispense water.
So even if this is outside of the clubs control do you think that the people inconvenienced on site should be compensated. A handful of caravans did leave the site overnight.

No, I think it’s petty to expect compensation for a few hours outage. Who do you think would pay these minimal amounts, the club or SSE?

You might perhaps deserve an extra night free but not much more .Those who left perhaps phoned the other site nearby and moved there - it’s only 5 miles away, so no great inconvenience for them.

The Club did inform all those who might have a booking about the work

click on Black Knowl. You can make an informed choice as to what you want to do, go on the understanding of what work is happening. Or not go but find somewhere else.

Yes, I answered the question. 🤷🏻♂️

I think that’s all part of discussion much like the other posts.

Evening
Almost every modern outfit is able to sustain itself on 12v leisure battery and lpg when needed. The before you travel information on the website is there for all to see and for all to make up their minds accordingly. Unknown outages are obviously beyond the site staffs prior knowledge. How do you think any information be communicated to people on site at that hour when staff are off duty?

Hi, we have had to manage onsite with electricity outages a fair few times over the years. Everything in modern caravans either runs alternatively off of gas, or off battery power for a while. So unless it's the telly, it's no great hardship. We quite like having the candles lit from time to time.
A bit confused as to why there was no water though. It's just a tap.🙂
Have never thought to ask for any sort of compensation and have always been able to work out what the problem is ourselves without needing a visit from the warden. Although some have come around to let everyone know.
Cheers, Alex.

I’m not sure why a power outage between 20:00 and the early hours would be particularly significant for 90% of outfits. We might not even notice at this time of year, as the fridge switches automatically and heating is not in use. Even the TV if on, wouldn’t be interrupted as it runs off the 12 volt. A few folk in small campers and no facilities would have a problem, but I would hope some sort of emergency toilet facilities could be maintained. As the before you travel info mentions the site would be provided with electricity with emergency generators on the 8 / 9th, I assume these must have failed for the period in question. I assume the lack of water would be down to pumps being inoperative. However, I would have thought most would have sufficient on board their RV’s or in the aquaroll for such a short outage. I certainly wouldn’t expect any compensation for such a brief period. If it went on for 24 hours that would be a different matter, in those circumstances I think a site night voucher would be appropriate.

Some years ago we were at Clumber Park when the NT were having problems with the Manton Mafia (Worksop) setting fires in the park. and as for condingesy plan? for evacuation the warden said if you come down here and both wardens compounds are empty then it's. time to leave

Just like it was communicated to us earlier this year when on a site in the Dordogne.
On arrival there was a big blackboard outside reception that informed campers there was to be a storm with high winds that night. On checking in we were informed twice, that there was to be a storm. Later in the evening just before dark the site staff went around the site on their golf buggies making sure every camper was aware of the storm and high winds. They offered assistance to tjose who required it in securing or putting away canopies etc.
That is what I call customer service.
Would I look for compensation absolutely not, our outfit is perfectly capable of coping with a power outage.

I hate this “it must be someone’s fault, let’s sue them, give them a bad name, etc…..”mindset.
Whatever happened to good old fashioned get on with life thinking? Helping each other out, rather than whinging and moaning about first world trivia?
TG, your storm was something different, life threatening possibly. We had similar warnings from site staff at Bolton Abbey Site one Winter stay. That storm brought down trees etc….

Nonetheless, it was pretty clear where your views lay - especially given your later posts. TW's point was entirely valid. I don't think it would even have occurred to me to ask for any kind of refund in those relatively trivial circumstances.

That is entirely different to the situation in this thread. Your situation was forecast and potentially much more impacting to the vans on site.
I cannot for the life of me see why a site manager should be expected to go all around the site, out of hours, telling people what they already know and where the impact on campers would be negligible.

We had a full, totally unexpected power cut last December while we were staying in a cottage on Hadrian’s Wall. (Part of the series of snow storms) Our host rang us to make sure we were ok, and after we said fine, got a torch, there are candles and we weren’t desperate to watch any TV drivel, we never gave it a thought. Wasn’t off for that long, but the loo flushed, we are perfectly able to have a friendly conversation with each other, it was warm enough, and we can both read, so we happily survived. Part of the adventure as far as we were concerned.

No where in my post did I say I wanted a refund. Following on from the very popular thread on the rising cost on club site fees and in some people view that this is due to the increased cost of electricity and a surcharge being added. I wondered what people's views are when this facility isn't available. Again I had no issues with the 2 planned outages, as people have pointed out the information was available on the club website..

Do not know how long the OP has been a member but the thought of compensation for such a trivial occurance seems to follow the latest pattern from many these days?🤔
We were at Black Knoll some years ago when there was an almighty bang and the transformer near the forestry camp site had blown up and all power was lost for nearly two days it seems everyone got by why expect any recompense and from who

Well, there you go. Most people are anti compensation.
Btw, you never did answer my question as to who you think should be liable for paying any compensation. Just wondering what your view on that is🤷🏻♂️

I hope you weren't coming on here looking for sympathy Seriously if an outrage is pre planned and you are aware of it you do have options although how they would pan out under the new booking arrangements I don't know? I suppose it is inevitable that campsites will from time to time suffer power outrages, especially those out in the countryside where many supplies are via overhead lines. Providing these only last hours I tend to agree it's just something you take on the chin. However if the lack of power lasts longer than 24 hours I do think you would be entitled to a partial refund. And of course it would not be just the electricity that would be a problem but also the facility blocks would be out of action I imagine. After all the Club is pretty quick to increase campsite prices because of the increase in electricity costs. The trouble is none of us know (well JK might) what the aide memoire standard the Club sets in these circumstances and probably if they have one its probably rarely used? It might be that if power was going to be out for longer that the Club might close the site completely although I am sure site staff would do their best to find an alternative site nearby. I seem to recall that a few years ago one of the sites with a swimming pool it was out of action and the Club reduced the site fee by £3 a night.
