Hi to all,
My wife and I have just bought our first caravan and looking forward to many family memories being made with our 6 year old twins. I haven't been in a touring caravan since family holidays as a child in the 70's so have been pleasantly surprised at how far they've come since then.
I was rather less keen than my wife, not because I don't like caravan holidays but because I'm the one who'll have to tow it.
We haven't actually used it yet, it's been returned to the dealer for a minor issue with the hitch handle not locking in the up position and while a little research has suggested this isn't a problem that would stop us from using it I'd rather get it checked out and fixed than turn up on a site and not be able to unhitch, as we found when we got it onto the driveway after picking it up.
We're off on holiday overseas next week so won't be using the van until September but we're hoping to get a couple of weekends away this year before fully committing next year.
It's nice to be here and any and all advice is welcome.
Alan & Charley.

Hi Alan and Charley and welcome to Club Together. Some aspects of caravanning will have changed since the 1970s but the basics remain the same.
I'd like to suggest that Charley considers doing a towing course as you never know when it might come in useful, either for sharing the driving on a long journey or, heaven forbid, in an emergency.
Have a browse around the forum and, if you need assistance, post your question in the appropriate section.
Happy caravanning.

Alan - welcome to CT. As far as the hitch handle not staying up - I had the same problem when I took our van into the dealers for service some time ago. Mentioned it as I was about to leave - guy comes out with a spray can of brake cleaner - quick blast around the hitch mechanism - and all sorted!

Thanks Richard, we had the exact same scenario leaving the dealer and the mechanic simply sprayed some WD40 in and it held. However by the time we got home, less than 5 miles away, it wouldn't stay up again so we had it returned for checking. I believe it's not a major issue but having paid a lot of money for the van and even though it's used I want it working as it should at least for a short time.
