Hi there, both of us had towed before (boats and a horse trailer) but we still took the 2 day Practical Caravanning course run by the Club. The course was excellent as it included some theory and loads of manoeuvring practice.

    Good luck and happy caravanning!

In addition to Roger's tip go to an industrial estate on a Sunday and practice reversing.

Just take your time ... be aware that your caravan will try to cut corners. You'll be fine.

As for extra instruction ... that's up to you but I suspect that the vast majority here just hitched up &  went for it and they're all sill here to tell the tale.

Your priority must be to do a CMC or CCC towing course it's not just towing it's also about loading the caravan and making the whole unit safe for you and others when on the road also what action to take when things go wrong, taking a caravan out on the road is not difficult if you know what your doing and have confidence.

But other commercial trainers cover all that -  - and with one to one tuition too rather than standing around in a group watching other people. The Club doesn’t actually run courses - they are run by those commercial trainers

So .... what golden nuggets of information did you glean from your towing course that you can pass on? 🙄

Forget it ED you've never got anything positive to add, I've seen plenty of poor families stood on the verge looking at whats left of their van and holiday strewn over the road, it's to serious a matter to get involved in your negative responses.

How was I being negative? I told the OP to take their time ... they'll be fine. I just don't agree ith you that a new tow-er needs to take a course.

How do you know that the destroyed caravan was the fault of the owner  & not someone else? A course doesn't get rid of the other idiots on the road.

Plus if you have cmc caravan cover you get a discount. You don’t if you have a HGV class 1 licence even thought you do a course for towing.
