GREEN FLAG MAYDAY RECOVERY - FIRST CLASS!
I've had the Green Flag cover for some years and, as a caravanner, I opted for Mayday with the Premium UK level - how glad I am that I made this choice. Last week, whilst on holiday in the New Forest, we made a day trip to visit Portland Bill. Unfortunately, I had a nasty fall, resulting in a 6-hour visit to Dorchester Hospital's A&E. I sustained a broken right arm - very painful & debillitating. Being unable to drive (or do little else!) I called Green Flag for assistance to get us home. On Saturday, their services picked up the caravan, the car, my wife and me and brought us home - a 213 mile, almost 6-hour journey with stops for toilet breaks at 3 separate service areas. For me, the journey was painful but I was so glad and relieved to get home! Nothing was too much trouble for the driver and we'll be forever grateful for the Green Flag Mayday recovery service. Highly recommended

Tom, I hope your arm is recovering and I’m glad your homeward journey went smoothly. It doesn’t always.
Other people have had the experience of only being taken part way home, then having to stop at a service station because the truck driver was out of hours while another vehicle was sought - and that new driver having to find his way through the traffic to get to them, reload them, and start all over again. The trade calls it Relay. And the handovers don’t always go well.

We also had that kind of experience years ago with the AA Relay Service, we'd had a traffic accident in Maidstone, Kent, when a young lady drove into the rear of our tow vehicle as we waited to turn right. Caravan was pitched on a site some distance away.
The tow ball was damaged and we were then rescued by the AA. I seem to recall we had three change-overs to get us home to Cheshire. I believe this is the way most recovery services work, hence our change to Green Flag Mayday.

I think if you are paying Green Flag and Not Mayday you Wont be covered for faults on your caravan.
O.K. if your car develops a fault, but what if your caravan gets stuck on a wet & Muddy site,
or you get a puncture on a Motorway on a caravan, would you like to change the wheel next to a live lane
get Mayday then they are both covered

Thanks for the advice but Mayday is UK only and I haven’t caravanned in Uk for about 20: years. The breakdown insurance I always bought for caravanning covered mainland Europe - and there are no wet and muddy sites there.

PS But ordinary Green Flag does cover punctures and breakdowns for those who do caravan in Uk - it’s all on their website and FAQs.
What Mayday adds on is taking you to a pre booked UK campsite as well as taking you home again afterwards. That’s why their premium is generally double the ordinary Green Flag price.

if you pay green flag and not mayday you will NOT be getting caravan cover, so they will only come out if your car breaks down, just like A.A. or R.A.C.
if you where to pay mayday they will come out for your caravan

It isn't very clear what Green Flag say.
If you first click for Breakdown Cover, the quote for my car including cover at home is £40.32
Lower down the category is Car and Trailer Cover. If I press this button the quote is again £40.32.
So the question is simple, Do I need to pay £40.32 x 2 ( £80.64) to achieve Breakdown cover for Car and Caravan.
£80.64 seems good value anyway but £40.32 just seems too cheap for them to attend both on the road and at home.

It has just taken 26 hours for Mayday to recover us from Essex to North Yorkshire.This consisted of two separate recoveries, as our 60 year old caravan apparently has too short a drawbar for a conventional beavertail to tow safely without touching the van on corners. We booked the recovery on Wed at about 14-00 for a slot the following morning of 08-00 to 10-00. After a lot of loading and unloading, we and car arrived home at 23-00. Caravan somehow appeared at our regular garage at 15-30 the following day.AT NO TIME DID WE RECEIVE ANY COMMUNICATION CONCERNING THE RECOVERY PROCESS. Oh! but we did get about 8 incomplete texts making sure that we knew to have our car repaired or we would be charged for any further recovery, and requesting feedback about our recovery experience. THESE ALL RECEIVED BEFORE WE HAD BEEN RECOVERED.
You can probably imagine that a dialogue is in progress with Mayday!!!!!

Fairportfan, That sounds stressful. Did you ride in the cab of the recovery truck all the way? That’s not good for such a long journey.
My own policy with a different company gave us the option of a self drive hire car for 48 hours to get us home under our own steam, while they brought our car and caravan back without us in their own way in their own good time.
I hope you get things sorted out.0
