Road advice on travelling to Whitby
Morning, Although caravanners for over 30 years, we would value advice from others out there. We are travelling to Whitby soon from Preston, have done the journey once before going over the moors and coming down into Whitby through Sleights. This hill has deterred us since from travelling to Whitby. Can anyone offer any alternative routes which are slightly less intimidating? Did think of going via Pickering to Scarborough and up the A171. Help please! We have a twin axle Lexon pulled by a Vauxhall Antara diesel.

I assume you're referring to Blue Bank? It's not that bad - just select a low gear and let the engine do the work. However, the A171 is an easy tow and the one we use, coming from East Yorkshire. There are a few twisty bits on that route as you get towards Whitby though, but nothing to worry about. We do it regularly with a 27' long TA van that's 8' wide. Indeed we are at the NYM Club site in a week's time.
One tip I would give you if you decide on the A171 route is to come in on the A64 and follow it all the way to the roundabout just after Staxton (don't go to Pickering) - turn left there - staying on the A64 but turn off through Seamer and follow the road to East Ayton. Turn right at the mini roundabout and go up the A170 (Racecourse Rd) and follow the signs towards the A171. There is a bit of a steep drop down into Scarbro' on the other side but in this part of the world you just can't avoid hills! This way you will avoid all the terrible congestion going through the middle of Scarbro'. Once on the 171, it's straightforward.
If you really don't do hills at all - then going through the centre of Scarbro' might be your only alternative but bear in mind there's a bit of a pull up the hill just north of Cloughton which probably isn't all that different from Blue Bank. As I said - it's hilly in some parts of North Yorkshire!
Hope this helps.

You could consider using the A59 to Harrogate then over to Thirsk, A19 north to the Cleveland Tontine Inn the A172 to Guisborough then south on the A171 to Whitby. A bit longer in time but shorter in miles. There is a steep hill with bends south of Guisborough but it's not a problem, caravans have been going up it for years

Bit of a convoluted route harry. I avoid the A59 if at all possible, especially around Harrogate - the traffic is a pain. Plus - if the OP doesn't do hills, he certainly won't like that drop down from Lythe to Sandsend
