Car hire from site
On longer stays then rather than take the Motorhome off pitch to travel around the area then we're thinking of hiring a small car (2 adults + dog) that the hire company will deliver to site and picked up from site. Anyone know of a list of companies that do this across the UK or is it something we'd have to look into locally whereever we're staying?
Thanks in advance
Pete.

Smart answer to a reoccurring problem. I can’t help you P but I love the notion. I hope you succeed👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Pete, There are national firms such as Enterprise and Avis and there will be local firms in the area you are going to as well. Many hire companies will deliver and collect unless you are very remote. Dogs are not usually a problem but the company will answer that when you call them.

The club has/had an arrangement with Enterprise which allowed a small discount to members. Check out Member Offers to see if it's still listed. I think they allow dogs.
When we used a hire car we simply checked online for those in the locality of our stay.

I used to take my parents down to Cornwall on train in early 2000’s, and would hire a car down there. Look out for local based firms, often cheaper than the big franchises. Make sure you opt for something suitable for where you are staying (Cornwall= small but nippy for narrow roads) Most companies will drop it off for you if not too rural. We were always met a station.

I would check with wardens if you want the car delivered to site, this may not be allowed without prior discussion.

I did once use the service in the early 2000s from Chatsworth. It did exactly what it said, we were picked up from the site for a short journey then the car was picked up from the site at the end. I remember it wasn't the cheapest so shop around but it was very convenient.
I remember hiring a car for the in-laws in Inverness, that was the cheapest ever but the firm was called reliable wrecks and the car was on both counts.

P, if you struggle with the Dog issue try requesting an estate vehicle. I have in the past with 2 Dogs they put a soft rubberoid lining down to which you lay the Dogs blanket as an anti stress👍🏻

We hired a car on the IOW last year through the Club's Enterprise deal. No dogs involved so can't help there. They picked us up from the site and dropped us back at the end of the hire period, all very efficient. It's not cheap and if we go back to the IOW would probably look for sites directly on bus routes as there is an excellent service.

We use Enterprise through the club (10% discount) and if you book a long way in advance it can be as little as £90 for 8 days. You don't have to pay in advance either. In normal times they will pick you up from site, but we have found that if they are low on staff then they can't offer the service (Penzance said this to us for our booked hire in July). So i guess its a taxi ride there. Still cheap though at around £15 per day as we booked it a year in advance.

We also bought a separate car hire excess insurance policy, only £35 for a year which covers UK and Europe. Whilst Enterprise give CDW free, the excess on any damage is usually very high and they charge you a lot per day if you want the extra cover. This policy covers that, we used Bettersafe.com. Hope this info is helpful!

We paid the Enterprise additional insurance and it added about 33% to the bill. Getting elsewhere, if its cheaper, is probable the way to go.
