Dashboard Trailer Light Fault Indication

Hi,

Just home from our first trip away, and our outfit has developed an odd fault. We tow our 2021 Adria Adora with a 2014 Volvo XC70. The car has a dealer fit towbar and towing wiring module. Initially everything worked fine, but I we have started getting a Trailer Right Indicator Fault dashboard warning, and the indicator flashes at  double speed. When checked, I expected to see a faulty bulb, as that was what I would have thought  with those symptoms. The LED indicators on the van are working, as are all the car indicators, simply at double speed.

I’m no electrical genius, but was wondering if anyone  had any thoughts as to what the issue might be? The outfit has done about 500 miles with everything working fine, and all other lights work correctly.

 Thanks for reading

 Iain

I can only suggest you clean each & any plug/socket on the caravans lighting loom and the 13 pin plug/socket between the car and caravan with switch cleaner.

Suggest you have the vehicle lighting module (VLM) in the caravan checked for compatibility with the car. We bought a 2021 caravan last May. Our tow car was a BMW X3 3.0 Drive 2013. It’s system was designed to work with ordinary filament trailer bulbs so if one failed it would show an open circuit fault with no load.

On the new caravan it did just this. It had LEDs for lighting, which use so little load that the car thought there was an open circuit and registered a fault. A replacement VLM solved the problem.

    Best wishes.

Do the indicators on the car work correctly without the van connected?

I have purchased a trailer light diagnostic unit from A----- that helped me sort a problem with my trailer lights it costs £12.99 I leave it in the car just incase I have any problems with the van or car.

    Thanks for the replies.

As it worked properly for the first 500 miles of towing (and in fact works fine on the lamps check prior to pulling away) I’m going to go down the cleaning all the contacts first, starting with the 13 pin, and make sure that is ok.
