Thanks for this Jill. Belmont is the P&R just off A1. Full details here (if the link works🤞) A good transit stop for many.

That’s a really useful facility, a few shops just across the road if I remember correctly. However, the best site in Durham is Durham Amateur Rowing Club CL.

Or even use a local CL and support them rather than DCC? There's one for £7.50 just a few miles away that isn't (literally in this case) a car park and one can stay as long as one likes.

(wasn't sites not looking like car parks important?)

You’re missing the point, in those places staying as long as you like and nature isn’t a consideration. It’s essentially an overnight stop, two at most for the majority - convenience is what it’s all about.

The invention of the bicycle was sometime in the early 1800s. The invention of the motor car was sometime in the late 1800s. It's only taken about 150 years to recognise that cars kill more cyclists than the other way around.

Not missing the point at all there Bill but thanks for trying to point it out.

If I was in the market I'd prefer supporting CL's than DCC.

Not sure Corners was missing the point at all in recommending CLs, Bill, though he might just have missed the fact that you'd just done the very same thing yourself!

"However, the best site in Durham is Durham Amateur Rowing Club CL."laughing

There are no shops across the road any more and haven't been for many years, but there's a Shell garage which does have a smallish shop in it but to get there you'll have to cross the seven lane very busy road from Durham to Sunderland and it gets very congested at rush hour.

There are small shops, a Sainbury's local supermarkets, and takeaways and pubs a mile or so down the road into Belmont.

Nothing like local knowledge Corners👍 Some would consider that a decent review for the P&R.🤣

I think we would have to be pretty desperate to stay over in P&R to be honest. Mind we have done Washington Services with van on back. That was a night never to be repeated🤣

Actually, I never responded to your post, SB, neither to agree nor disagree so you’re way off beam there.

Back to the topic. Perhaps Corners can say if, in his opinion, there is much call for such a facility in Durham. It’s not an area I’m familiar with.

When is a shop directly across the road not a shop in your world? Have you observed the growth in convenience stores attached to petrol stations? It’s quite the rage these days.

I can walk to Washington serviced in about 5 minutes, next time you're there let me know and I'll put the kettle on!

Won't be much different to stopping on the club's Durham site, although a dark site cheaper!😁

If just used as a stop over going north or south it is literally two minutes (300 metres) from the A1(M) and if one didn't mind the road noise early morning and late afternoon and the whole car park 'thing' then it would be good for that.  Also a two night stop would be good for those venturing into Durham city during the day and evening using the park and ride.

When ever I've used that park and ride there has always been a few MH, perhaps five or so on a Saturday, from talking to one couple on the bus they were just going to look round Durham during the day and be on a site later on near Hexham.

I suppose the car park is empty at night so DCC will get some money out of it.

For anyone considering it, there are no buses on Sundays.

It’s quite possible you might need to take an anti grumpy pill tonight SB. 🤷‍♀️ I haven’t got a clue why you have responded to my post. I neither know nor care if there is a shop the other side of a very busy road. I was responding to Corners, who does have a wealth of local knowledge for that area.

Thanks for the offer Corners😁 It was a bit of a noisy night that stay we did. We used Club Site on our next visit with MH, although we didn’t go into Durham. We were visiting Hexham Xmas Fair, and had a nice walk to Finchale Priory, where there is a very nice caravan site. We know Rowing Club CL as well. Tight pitches, and you don’t really want to be there on a busy event night at the Club, but it’s a nice walk up the river. When we did stop to go into Durham, we simply drove MH in and parked MH up opposite bank of River, and had a nice walk over Framwellgate Bridge, up to Castle and Cathedral.

Cheers, Corners. It sounds as if it might be of use to those who don’t mind the noise. It’s not my cup of tea though.

It can be very noisy indeed. We quite like the Durham Club Site, only stayed in Winter months when it was quite cheap. The pitches at the bottom  near the tent area are the best in terms of noise, it didn’t bother us much. If it was £5 for car park, or £15 for Club Site, I would opt for Club Site. No idea how much it is now though on Site, probably a lot more. I recall a decent Fish and Chip van calling in one evening🤔

    Well Bill you posted:

a few shops just across the road if I remember correctly.

And there isn't a few. And it's not attached either it's inside and quite small. I posted to give a better impression for anyone wishing to visit, in case they took your few as meaning there would be quite a selection to buy from.

Of course you wouldn’t pay a night's fee at both the club site and the P&R. That would be crazy so, instead, you’d obviously use one or the other.

    Squabbling? No it’s debate.

If overnighting, I'd probably use the P&R. If visiting the city, I'd use Baxter Wood Farm CL as I did last year. There's no way I'd pay the CAMC prices to pitch next to a motorway.

As for the reference to JK's (tongue in cheek?) suggestion of booking a one night at a club site to enable a "splash & dash", good luck with that as all the pitches were taken a year previously and you didn't know you'd need some water that far ahead.

All club sites have pitches taken a year in advance now CY? Didn't you post recently that club sites would be empty due to the higher prices?
