Hi

Just wondering if anyone tows a Coachman 575 VIP 1700kg  or similar size caravan with either car above as I am looking at both cars.in auto 180ps format.

I am wondering if the cars are maintain 8th or 9th gear on motorways etc.

I am also wondering if the tow bars were fitted after market not at the factory and if so any changes to gearbox and engine cooling.

The reason I ask is the 3 litre VW Toureg which can tow up to 3.5 tonne if a factory bar is fitted but is restricted to 1500kg (I think) if an after market bar is fitted.

Any comments appreciated Richard

No replies so far for you. Down here I would go to Roger Young, the JLR main dealer at Saltash and talk to him and his sales and service managers. They sell both models and are reliable people as well as knowledgeable. Do you have people like that you can speak to in your area?

None of the JLR models require changes to gearbox or engine cooling.

When I investigated buying a Touareg I never heard of that weight restriction, sounds like social media urban myth rubbish to me. However the Disco Sport and F pace are based on entirely different platforms and aimed at entirely different customers so difficult to compare. The early Disco Sport sits on a modified FL2 platform designed by Ford and based on a Focus platform.

I tow a Bailey Pegasus Grande Brindisi (similar weight) with a 2019 Disco Sport 2.0D 180bhp auto. Factory fit electric tow bar. Tows like a dream. I specced the radar cruise control, just get on the motorway, set the cruise and let the gearbox do whatever it wants, easy. I get about 25mpg towing long haul. Towing limit is 2 tonnes. My dilemma is I’m ready for a change and have just been told by the main dealer they can only sell me a PHEV Disco Sport at the moment, no diesels or petrols until further notice (ever?). And I can’t order any F Pace at all! Supply chain problems. Good luck.

When I changed cars last time, I considered both these models (ended up with a BMW X5 with factory fit tow bar)

A significant difference (at least for me) was, IIRC, the tow ball weight capacity. In fact, Jaguar dealers seemed so unclear and inconsistent on that spec, I phoned Jaguar customer services and asked them, explaining I’d been given varying info from dealers. Result - they never called back as promised! But the figure being bandied around was IIRC 100kg but don’t quote me.

Whereas the Disco (but I cannot recall which model I looked at) may have been 150kg.

I mention this as the OP didn’t mention his requirement for tow ball weight. Worth checking.

We towed a Coachman VIP 575 1700kg with a Discovery Sport from 2017 to 2020 (previously towed a Bailey Unicorn series 3 with the same car). It towed very well, although I do not think it got into 9th gear very often. Fuel consumption was 35-42 solo and 25-28 towing. Despite Landrover 'knockers' comments, it was utterly reliable. We now have a Volvo XC90 R-Line Pro mild diesel hybrid which is also excellent although more thirsty when towing than I expected (might improve as it has done less than 5,000 miles). Reason for not buying another Discovery Sport was that we wanted more luggage space for electric bikes. Incidentally, I looked at the F Pace but when I measured the boot opening, it was too small to put the folding electric bikes in without a lot of fiddling. We had LR detachable towbar and electrics which never had any problems. We had LR detachable tow bar and electrics
