At this time of year, Red Kite, I'm more inclined to be seeing a leucistic sparrow regularly on the feeders, or even a Christmas robin trying his Santa hat out before THE DAY innocent

Fabulous news, Bon voyage, 437 Elsin, hope your journey North is a happy one. See you at Keilder in a few weeks time unless of course you decided to wait a season or two!

I'd be surprised if Elsin returns this year, as it seems that the youngsters like to take a year out before returning to the home roosting region, but one never knows. It would be great to see him back in this country again whenever he decides to return.

A couple of updates on British Ospreys spotted recently, prior to their return to the country, hopefully.

    Rutland Osprey Project

Some fantastic news from the team! 30(05)  has been sighted in her wintering grounds along the coast near Diourmel, Senegal.

     Keilder Ospreys

Today, Feb 23rd at Nianing Lagoon in Senegal, which is south of the capital Dakar, he saw Blue 432/Eshells, the oldest of three on Nest 6 in 2021

Talking to someone at Welney Wetlands today and they said that they saw an Osprey at Holkham Hall on Tuesday, 1st.March. Apparently at least 4 people in a group saw it so looks like a very early arrival.

That is early, but I guess it could well be one heading for Rutland as they are usually the first to be recorded. The projected dates for those that are on nests with cameras can be found on this website. http://ukospreys.uk/countdowndt.htm

The Manton Bay, Rutland Water, birds are usually the first of these pairs, with expected arrival of 19th March.

    ADP

Here are a couple of other web sites dedicated to Ospreys that are worth keeping an eye on. The first is for the Kielder nests and the second is the RSPB one for it's Poole Harbour nest , which has links to all their nest cameras reports.

    No problem!😊

Here's another link that should prove extra useful, as it has all the youtube links for the current streams from nesting sites cameras.

That’s good news, Nellie. Let’s hope that the Llyn Brenig pair which had their nest toppled last year by odious individuals are well and return somewhere to successfully breed this year. Anyone know what happened re. Investigation and if a new pole has been erected?

Found this posted on the RSPB Llyn Brenig  web site dated 24th Jan.

"The final stage of the rebuilding of the osprey nesting site callously felled by vandals with a chainsaw last April was completed last week when Dŵr Cymru | Welsh Water & staff from Llyn Brenig winched a platform into place and assembled a new nest"

Don't yet know the outcome of the investigation, but have asked the question.

There is a Brenig FaceBook page which might interest you.

Micky, this is the full post on Brenig FB page about the new nest post.

" The final stage of the rebuilding of the osprey nesting site callously felled by vandals with a chainsaw last April was completed last week when Dŵr Cymru | Welsh Water staff from Llyn Brenig winched a platform into place and assembled a new nest.

The work to repair the damage commenced after the ospreys had migrated away for the winter (to as far south as Senegal and Gambia). In October, Openreach and GT Williams kindly sourced and erected a new telegraph pole. Unfortunately, the next stage - the installation of the nesting platform - was delayed by Storm Arwen in November, which flattened trees nearby. The damage left by the gales prevented the access of heavy machinery intended to lift the platform on to the pole. The team’s only choice was to climb up and rebuild it all by hand. Once the support was in place, the team refashioned a new nest on top, stick by stick.

The platform, paid for out of donations from the public to North Wales Wildlife Trust following last year’s incident, is specially fabricated out of aluminium to make it long-lasting and safer for climbing access.

Storm Arwen did contribute one positive. Because trees were felled by the storm - and more will have to come down for safety reasons - the landscape is much more open, which should make the site more appealing to the ospreys. More about this tomorrow…

The completion of the nesting platform this month together with extra security measures in place offers hope that the magnificent birds of prey will return in in 2022.

Thanks Nellie, good stuff. You can only guess as to the motive which drove these callous people to do what they did. All premeditated but why? Let’s hope for a better 2020 Osprey year.

I think you mean 2022, micky, as 2020 was a poor year compared to the previous 4 yrs.laughing I don't have the figures of birds ringed in 2021. Fingers crossed that this year will be the best of them all, after all the storms we've had.

"And the season begins as we have our first Osprey back which was first seen on Saturday (12th)!

We haven't yet managed to confirm an ID on which bird it is, but we hope to soon and it is all very exciting 🦅 Meanwhile, the wait is still on for the return of Maya and 33(11), so keep an eye on our webcams which can be accessed through our website or via YouTube!"

Messages for Brian from the Loch Garten RSPB web site.

"The osprey cam is being switched to the RSPB YouTube account this evening between 7.45 - 8:00."   https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jBEx4Ev2kGc

Hi folks, I've had word today from Wildlife Windows that our new osprey cam at Loch Garten has gone live today. I'm letting you know as I know there are many of you chomping at the bit to get a view of the nest - but you'll see it's a different nest this year! Fergus and I are doing a blog due to be published at the end of this week, but I didn't want to keep the web-cam from you till then, so here it is. I hope you like it!

It's close to the old nest and still viewable from the Nature Centre, but is in a completely healthy Scots pine, unlike the old nest, which only had one living limb.
We're obviously keen to attract a new breeding pair to this historic site, so have also thinned out the tree canopy surrounding the nest, after taking advice from Roy Dennis. NatureScot gave us consent to carry out both of these bits of work. The view from the centre isn't much different - there are still a lot of trees around, but at the nest itself it feels a lot more open.
Anyway, more detail to come, but in the meantime, enjoy the view! "

ABM- A bit insulting but not taken down I see. As previously said we looked after Ospreys at Clywedog, years befor the RSPB turned them into cash machines. We pay their feed bills through our fishing permits.more than most here do.
