No Calor Gas bottles

The cylinders used on fork lift trucks are a completely differnt type as they use liquid take off rather than the vapour take off used in caravans.

Grayjames. I have 2 Calorlite cylinders full. As I use very little gas ( a cylinder will last me 2 years ) due to my habit of eating out, I expect them to be sufficient for me until I finish my way of caravan life.
Navigateur...That was what I was told but stand corrected. However it must be used in some other way for Arrow Plant Hire to stock it.

Lots. Space heating, blow torches, tar boilers, even tea urns. The light ones are easier to carry up a ladder so builders wanted them. Which seems to have caused the demise of that type of cylinder as they were not up to withstanding what builders do to them - especially throwing them off roofs!

It does seem probable that building and, especially, roofing suppliers might stock them as blowtorch applications would get through a fair bit of gas.

I would go for Gaslite (formerly BP). Homebase and others were stockists. Lighter, transparent so you can check the level, great grab handles and a clip on 27mm regulator. A far better product than anything Calor has come up with.

Unless you are seriously going off grid or using sites with no EHU then i wouid suggest that gas is becoming less of a requirement.
There are some very good camping induction hobs on the market for little money, and most new LV's have provision for a microwave so less of a requirement for the conventional gas cooker, and there are some very good camping griddles for that morning fry up.
We have a gas BBQ but seldom cook anything that takes more than 30 minutes so use little gas. Cant remember when we last used the gas fire and then only as a quick boost until the electric warms up, and touch wood, never had to use the fridge on gas.
Really good weight reduction if you dispense with the gas cylinders

Even if we didn’t use it off grid, Calor would work out expensive in our MH. The tall fridge freezer gobbles it, even with just stops to visit things and Supermarket shopping. Conversely 6 kg lasted ages in our caravan, which was always on EHU, despite using the oven and a gas BBQ a lot.

I would concur about the gas consumption of these big fridge/feezers. The consumption does seem a bit disproportionate for their size. Roughly 40% bigger but probably at least double the gas consumption. When I had a caravan, gas consumption was negligible but off-grid with the motorhome, even discounting heating, it does seemed to have jumped somewhat.

Looks like obtaining Calor gas suitable for caravans etc for the coming season is going to be very difficult, our local outlets have not had a delivery for over 2 months now. There are some 6kg LPG bottles for sale on ebay but most are buyer collect and some are £50 or more, and most seem to be in the Midlands area.
Only need to replace an empty 4.5kg butane, but these are like gold dust to find. Local suppliers are also not signing up any new contracts so you have to have a bottle to return and it has to be the same as the full one you take away, if you can find one.
Probably got enough for now as can switch to Repsol whilst in Spain.
Not a big user of gas, BBQ mainly, and sometimes gas hob on cooker, but going to invest in a single electric hob , but was just wondering if folks were having similar issues still in their area.

Towed daughter’s caravan on to seasonal pitch North Yorkshire at the weekend, and I was talking to warden (commercial site) about availability of Calor gas. He said he was getting a delivery this week ready for opening tomorrow. Had plenty including Calor lights, but was only allowed to exchange like for like and no new contracts.

Hi BB, I recall my MH buddy asking me about watching TV etc whilst away, he was going to Spain in January at the time, but, as we ago in Spring /Summer sitting outside, glass in hand, is how we tend to fill the evenings.
I will suggest to him, he goes to Spain next month, to look at your post and take calculator, notepad and pen!!
I recall the conversation as, when I asked why he needed to take DVDs watch TV etc, he said it was because it was dark and cold by 4PM ish so needed to fill the evening time.
We had not considered going away in the winter and his comments reinforced our view that it was not for us.
They also ditched it after a couple of years and now go out in late April.
As for gas cylinder availability-looking at prices last week became aware of a new supplier for Flo Gas not far from home and when I passed on Saturday I called in.
We use the Gaslight 10kg and he said he had about 60 available.........at £49.95! Mind you thats less than Flo Gas charge, and he also had lots of 6kg propane.

I don't have a mains electric consumption figure, however I found this on the Dometic website...
ca. 3.9 KWh / 460 g for electric and gas (per day?)
I Reckon I'm using 523 g per day incl hob and a bit of heating so, about right?
if I switch to mains, using the above figure, 3.9 kWh x €0.40, it would cost €1.56 a day for the fridge alone, plus gas for the hob plus either gas or mains for heat.
I think the above is about right BB. On my last winter trip to Spain 4Kw of electricity was included in the pitch price and I used to run my tall Thetford fridge from that plus travel kettle and keep the batteries topped up. Heating and cooking were with gas from my refillable bottles. and at he end of my stay the average daily electricity consumption came to about 4Kw. I had to refill my 11Kgm gaslow bottle only once in 6 weeks but the amount of gas used will always depend on how cold it is and what you set the thermostat to.
What is the current price of LPG at the garage pumps these days in Spain?

I admire your meticulous attention to detail, for us we just go and use whatever is the most convenient, normally EHU, lots of sites in Sain give you 7kw per day free if you are long stay, which we found was just about adequate, although we normally go end of March thru June when hopefully heating is not required.
I guess we have a rather Blaise outlook on our trips over there, i.e. we are not at home for 90 days so energy costs at home very low, only standing charge for gas, minimum electric, so some of the costs for being in the SUN, which is very important for us, are somewhat of an irrelevence, however, have been doing some sums, and if you add up ferry costs, insurance, animal health certificate for 2 dogs, and now the increased price of diesel, getting worse, we could probably have an additional 1 months stay on a site in the UK, and sit outside under a sun lamp
P.S. we have a local supplier of butane/lpg who has loads of bottles of all shapes and sizes, down side is, you have to return empty cylinder to them to get full cylinder, and you need yet another connector, apparently Calor patented most of their connectors, hence the large number of different connectors in circulation

+1 but whilst on your travels can you report back if you see any sign of shortage of gas, diesel or petrol, I have a daughter who lives and works in Spain (Torrevieja) but apart from a large increase in price she says all looks to be ok just now.

ps...sunrise today was 7:22am and sunset is at 7:00pm....so a long way from being dark and cold at 4pm.
Don't know where you got the Times from, BB, but sunrise is about 6:45 now and it's not dark until over 12 hrs later, and that's in Scotland, so very similar to your good self.

Hi BB, Yes I realised where Spain is!
In the same way that LPG provision will be tailored to what the individual prefers, and who will then use a variety of factors to justify their preferences, so our decision that “wintering” in Spain is not for us sees us hone in on any negatives that support that decision!Anyway, there was an upside as, after they ditched the January departure for Spain, we started taking long haul holidays for that sunshine boost you are now getting-we have sun at the moment but it’s only 9c!
Back on LPG, is there a reason why a green 6kg leisure propane cylinder is 33% more than a red one?
One has clip on which is more convenient but is there anything other than that??

pumped LPG is €0.89 locally, so a fraction cheaper than the stand alone Repsol bottle....but not so convenient of one's van is 'set up' on the pitch.
Thanks BB that is the about the same price as it was here last week. That would make it about £16.88 to refill an 11Kgm bottle,
