Car-caravan lighting and auxiliary extension lead
Hi,
Only my Second post here. So please bear with me.
Our new to us Hymer 470 has the usual two leads to plug into our Car.
The Car, a 2012 Range Rover has the two sockets for the leads with the factory fitted tow bar (removable ball). But the leads do not reach from the Caravan to the car.
A friend has loaned me a Y Splitter lead that I can use this weekend as we are only going local. However, I cannot find small extension leads for both. I can buy the plugs and cable, make a couple up. But was just looking for something easy.
Does anywhere know where I can buy ready made up please?

I assume you have a Hymer 470 CARAVAN and that both the car and caravan have 2 sockets known as 12N and 12S; the 12N socket powers the indicators, stop lights on the caravan and the 12S powers the caravan internal 12v electrics. However the cables are not long enough to allow connection caravan to car. Is there not any slack in the cables under the caravan that you could use? I am not an electrician but would it not be a better long term solution to fit 2 waterproof joining boxes (splitters) under the caravan and get long enough 7 core cable (need 2 lengths - think the colours are the same for each connector)) rather than have more sockets in the cables. The colour code for wiring is on Page 613 of the Club Handbook.

Amesford. You are of course correct if there are connection boxes already fitted. I only gave my solution because on my caravan the 13 pin cable is connected to the control box via a sealed connector - if you see what I mean! Maybe it is different with 7 core cables - can't remember.
Euero Trotters. You may wish to change to Caravanner in your pic which shows you as Motorhomer!

My thoughts are that the previous owner of the van must have been able to tow it, so the leads must have reached their sockets.
Are your sockets on your car particularly far forward?
If not, I would also suggest that the cables have been clipped to the A frame, or pulled into the van, to stop them dragging on the road.

Perhaps the previous user's vehicle was fitted with a 13-pin socket and they had been using the cable type of 13-pin to 2x7-pin adaptor.

Hi,
We have a motorhome and a caravan!
There is no option on here to mark as having both!
Thank you

You could perhaps elaborate in your profile instead of saying you loathe camping in the UK. Just a suggestion.

You will be replacing those sockets soon as in that position they will rapidly corode. You can then put the replacements in a spot more suited to use.

What about the aesthetics of frayed/muddy trousers?

No. The roll out boot floor has that function covered.

The lower tailgate opens on a button and when down keeps one about 18" away from the tow ball.

`Yes, they had an aftermarket fixed ball tow bar

just using a y splitter for now.
dealing with other issues
Damp
Gas (lost rubber bullnose washer for pigtail that is the only type for safe fill). We had an empty Calor Lite with standard pigatale. When I eventually found a Calor outlet with standard 6kg, they would not swap. No Gas, no cooker so went to the pub.
Next day, went to David Smithsons in KIdsgrove. We needed some Oxygen and Nitrogen for work so picked up a rubber washer along with a second safe fill.
Porch awning beam has a leak, keeps deflating like a bouncy castle.
Sides coming apart on caravan. Gap in wardrobe.
And to top it all, I forgot to unhitch the break away cable. Snapped it, schoolboy error.

But fridge not working and no reverse light

I have twin 7 pin on the car.
MY Hymer cable will not reach.
I have used. Y adapter as a short term measure.
I was looking for extensions for both leads,

the 'Y adapters' allow you to plug a 13 pin car or caravan into a 12N/12S car or caravan. We thought you had 12N & 12S (ie black & grey 7 pin) sockets on your car with the same on your caravan and the leads were not long enough to reach between the two. You've confused us both if you say you are now using an adapter in the mean time.

If the fridge and reversing light are not working you need to see if it is the wiring on your car or your caravan. Can you not connect up to your friends outfit to try to find out where the 'fault' is. Then proceed accordingly - if car contact a local tow bar fitter, if caravan, a caravan repair man. It is probably something quite straight forward.
