The Thames at Night
We have just finished watching The Thames at Night with (Sir) Tony Robinson on Channel 5. https://www.channel5.com/show/the-thames-at-night-with-tony-robinson/season-1 Really interesting series with some lovely photography. London from the River Thames is magnificent, even more so at night.

Only seen one of the 3? episodes so far, but agree it’s a good watch. Tony Robinson has a nice style. Amazing how much stuff gets done overnight that we tend to take for granted.

I agree, Channel Five do seem to have upped their game regarding this type of programme. The Thames at Night follows on from a previous series tracing the Thames from source to sea, https://www.channel5.com/show/the-thames-britain-s-great-river-with-tony-robinson/season-1/episode-3 When we had a boat, which we moored on the Kennet and Avon Canal about 10 miles from the Thames at Reading we often had holidays on the river. Even went on the tideway once which was a bit scary but we wanted to get to the Grand Union Canal at Brentford so we could do a circular trip up the GU and down the Oxford and back down the Thames. So I have quite a soft spot for the Thames.

I must catch up on the series, I watched the first programme and enjoyed it. We were lucky enough to travel by boat all the way from the sea along the Thames to the HMS Belfast, quite spectacular through the Thames Barrier etc. Thanks for the reminder David.

It's surprising how much of a lop wind over tide can create, even in sheltered waters.

I watched part of one episode. I found it excruciating watching Tony Robinson doing his best to make finding a few drops of oil on the floor below the engine of a boat interesting. Yawn.

All the things he did were contrived to a greater or lesser extent ( as they are in most of this type of programme) but that was surely not the point, all he was doing was illustrating many of the jobs that go unnoticed when we are all in bed? For the many uninitiated those little segments are used to inform the viewer what actually happens. To me the main enjoyment of the programmes where the wonderful night time vistas of a beautiful City.

+1👍🏻, if he walked around alluding to what is going around him he’d be called out as boring & uninventive. He’ll be forever in my mind for opening up digging in dirt & making it interesting. Geez that time team opened my eyes to our rich History in a big & good way.
