    In that case the trucking company should put extra mirrors so you can see. There is no excuse to take a life because there’s a blind spot. We can send a satellite to far flung planets & the Sun but we can’t see behind to save life because ‘it’s always been like that’🤷🏻‍♂️. Not clever. . .So not clever☹️

    PS-a notice doesn’t absolve anyone of dangerous driving.

    I can tell that you have no idea about trucks. Every truck on the road has blind spots. With an articulated vehicle if you don’t have it in a perfectly straight line, say you have the cab bit slightly to the right and it only takes a centimetre then you don’t see all the left side of the vehicle until you get it straight again.  Maybe with a little common sense some one on a cycle would not go past the nearside of a left turning truck.

    I have an opinion, one that differs from yours-constantly. However I am willing to debate, you do the whole attack thing as usual. I call it a caring attitude you disagree. Tis life🤷🏻‍♂️

    Isn’t that exactly why some transport operators now fit cameras to cover blind spots? There’s no longer a reason to take chances and hope for the best.

    +1 Particularly at this time of year when the sun is low and behind, no amount of mirrors or cameras is going to show a cyclist trying to pass on the near side, there is just to much glare. I expect David remembers the mirrors placed on the way to the shaft side at many pits, with a sign above saying this man is responsible for your safety. Cyclist do need to take responsibility for their actions and going up the side of an HGV  is just plain stupid.

    Where we live many of the most heavily used roads into and out of the centre of the town, have wide cycle/pedestrian paths ,that it seems are with the amount of cyclists that use the road instead are not for them?,

    I have had quite a few conversations?  In that I think a cyclist not using a cycle way when it is available, should be charged with obstructing the highway

    The whole point of the change in HC rules is surely to protect life and limb. How can anyone with a conscience oppose that?

    That is indeed how things are in The Netherlands. Our road safety laws and legislation at times are a travesty in comparison. Each group of road users, from pedestrian right through to HGV drivers will consist mainly of sensible, reasonable people but sadly with a few bad elements in each category. It makes sense to protect the most vulnerable first, as that’s where the serious damage to life and limb will have the most impact. Having utilised the roads as a pedestrian, a horse rider, a cyclist and a vehicle driver, I know which made me feel the most vulnerable. 

    OH was out on his bike last week locally. Horse rider in front of him, without warning a group of cyclist swarmed past him and not only did they not swing out for the horse, some idiots actually went down the horses inside😡 Of course it jumped about, poor thing didn’t know what was happening. Luckily rider was ok. OH only has a rear view camera at moment, but had he had a front view, it would have gone to the Police. Some riders are now using cameras, like cyclists. Equine death statistics around us are bad. Not always the fault of the vehicle user, and not deliberate, more inattentive driving and a complete absence of common sense around horses.

    Is it not the case that because of the very large cycling. Population the Government have invested heavily in  cycle safety with their roads infrastructure  as well?

    There are some very stupid cyclists out there, without doubt. The cycling forums confirm this, and it’s sadly often an entrenched belligerent mindset (as you get with many a forum😉) that doesn’t help things move forwards. However, car users outnumber cyclists hugely, so the chance of encountering an idiot is statistically higher.

    I can guarantee that every ride out on my bike I will run the gauntlet of at least half a dozen such car drivers. OH has been knocked off his bike through no fault of his own three times, me a mere twice. Trust me, if feels real when you are bleeding and wondering which body parts aren’t working as they should.

    I agree that cyclists need to take responsibility for their actions, however, as an occasional cyclist, I can verify that there are SOME drivers who will deliberately make things difficult for cyclists as they refuse to make any room at traffic lights or junctions, even though they have overtaken the cyclist when approaching so are fully aware of their presence.  However, that being said, many roads in the UK are simply not safe for cyclists as they may be too narrow or the traffic, far too heavy.

    I think most would accept that and it’s acknowledged in this thread. You have to question where the antipathy towards some cyclists comes from tho’?

    2020 figures should be ignored, not a normal year. Cycling during lockdown was bliss, very few vehicles out in the first one, a lot safer to be out there. I suspect the cycling casualty figures might be up in 2021.

    Who knows SB🤷‍♀️, although I suspect it  is mainly lack of understanding and patience on the part of most aggression.
    I have experienced the true nastiness though, I was out with OH and some way in front of him when a sporty saloon driven by a certain demographic chose to roar at me on my side of the road. He shuddered up alongside, window down and gave me some verbal. I wasn’t polite back I admit. By which time OH had arrived, with his chum, and cowardly idiot found himself outnumbered. 

    We cycle out as safely as possible, highly visible, covered in lights day and night, don’t go up the inside of vehicles, take care of pedestrians, don’t cycle on busy narrow roads, try to use cycle lanes (pathetic around us)and avoid busy times of the day. But having done all we can do, still come to grief physically and verbally.☹️

    I think your reply "Yes!" in response to my question "So it’s OK to hit a cyclist if you think he’s done something stupid, is it?" explains exactly why there is need for change in order to protect the more vulnerable road users.

    I'm appalled, quite honestly, at your stance.

    Not sure what you mean by adjusted there SB? They were taken in full and not adjusted in any way from the government website on the new changes.

    As far back as the 1960's, when I learned to drive, my instructor told me to treat everyone else on the road, as an idiot, because many of them will be. The same still applies today and I include pedestrians. Yesterday afternoon a chap was walking briskly along a pavement edge with his dog, parallel to the road. As he got to a zebra crossing, which I was only three or four feet away from, he did a rapid left turn straight onto the crossing without looking. I had no chance of stopping even though I was doing less than 20mph. Thankfully I didn't hit him but he decided I warranted a rude gesture. If anything worse had happened I had my dashcam footage to show the incident. To my mind he was one of the idiots.

    Please note..........At no point did I intimate that I would harm another person on purpose.I pointed out the failure in the rules whereby a cycle person would be the innocent party in the event that that person undertook a motor vehicle that was indicating the drivers intention to turn left!

    I think you need to re-read the posts to see the whole story, NP, but  I'll refresh your memory of what you said originally which was - 

    "If cycle pilots decide to under take a vehicle that is signalling a left turn then they deserve to get hit!"

    You compounded this in your post of 12.10.

    Your turn around is clear to see.
