MH Insurance Renewal
It’s that time of year again🤨 Searching is never fun, but this year there’s a new set of hurdles to enjoy. Many providers, including both Clubs, now have questions about any modifications/work you might have made, such as a bike rack, a canopy, a solar panel, etc.... Fine you say, tick the box you think. 🤔 Not that simple. You have to enter the date the modification was fitted. Wonderfully complicated if you have a second hand MH like we have. After not getting very far with some providers, we then found another little trap for the unwary. My OH only has his name on MH, I am named driver on our other two vehicles. No third party any more from some providers, so he would not be able to drive our other two vehicles. And his no claims is only for the MH. 😡 He would have to start again if we sold the MH and got something else. It does make you wonder what “wriggle room” insurance providers will come up with next. Anyway, to cut a boring story short, we have simply stayed with our current provider, who don’t need all the minutiae, and carry over no claims, with third party cover. Job done. Slightly more than best price we were quoted, (neither Club came close) but worth it for everything we need without the hassle.

Not quite the same but when we changed our steel wheels for alloys I contacted the Club, with whom we have our insurance and there as an extra premium of about £50. This is pretty odd as the next generation of our motorhome came with alloy wheels!!! I did think about changing to Comfort as they seem more relaxed about changes and with no extra charge so will be watching carefully when my renewal comes up in March!!! What I don't understand is that the Club should understand the sort of modifications that motorhomers are likely to make and set their policies accordingly.

Apparently how long you purchase before the policy is due to begin can make a big difference to your quote. Moneysavingexpert (MSE) say “insurers look at hundreds of factors when determining a premium; one of those is when a driver buys cover. Insurers have admitted that drivers who leave it to the last minute are considered higher risk.”
According to MSE "some insurers [have told us] they've seen a direct link between drivers who leave sorting their insurance to the last moment and a higher number of claims." In that context they obviously need that information to profile your risk.

Having read the bike rack comment in the original post, I rang Devitts the club insurance agents this morning to let them know that we have a Fiamma rack fitted on our van. The response was : a bike rack is not something we need to know about but we have recorded it as you have informed us. At least they now know.

Our MH hasn’t had any modifications done since we bought it seven years ago. We didn’t count a new stainless steel exhaust system as such, merely something that might require periodic renewal like tyres.🤷♀️ But it was frankly ridiculous all the “what have you had done, when was it done” (exact date required) stuff, so we just rang our current insurers, who we are more than happy with, and they were perfectly happy to go with a simple renewal. It’s the no third party to drive another vehicle, and not being able to carry over no claims to another vehicle that we decided not to go with. We aren’t on our renewal deadline either, a way to go yet.
Jeep is next month. That should be fun🤨

We used NFU for years, for house, vehicles and horse. Then anything with a LR badge became uninsurable for post codes around us, and they let us down badly on horse insurance, so we haven’t been back since. Have used LV on numerous occasions though, always seem reasonable.

Agree totally DK. There isn’t always logic in what happens, or how a quote comes together.
I posted to pass on information to others.

Yes, but they blindly operate to a script which includes a load of questions that may or may not be relevant in the circumstances.

+1 TDA, I’d spent years with NFU then they upped the premium 25%. 7yrs later I still don’t pay the premiums I did to NFU. If I’d stayed I’d not continue with them as they closed the local(next village) office, that was a main plus for me-local access.

Yes, the local offices were a huge plus. You could just ring up to add/ask anything.

I just done a comparison to renew our motorhome insurance as my current provider (Saga) have quoted £205. Caravan Guard came in at £261, and I then went on the club website to get a quote for £114. Celebrations were a bit premature as I hadn't heard of the provider before (MISL ZM) so decided to look at customer revues. The company has only been rated 1.5 stars and the majority of reviews are extremely negative, highlighting poor response times to phone calls and e-mails. Customer service is pretty high on my priority list and it is worth paying that bit extra for a quality service. Needless to say, I will be staying with Saga.
I must say though that I'm surprised this firm was actually allowed to provide a quote via the clubs insurance brokers and maybe some vetting of providers is required to ensure that high standards are met.
