With our first years insurance coming up for renewal soon we find that the rest of the family would like to use the motorhome.

Therefore we need up to 6 named drivers or maybe any driver with a lower age limit. All drivers would be over 40.

Does anyone know of an insurance company that will do this?

Fully comp. with breakdown preferably.

Thanks

Adrian Flux springs to mind. They specialise in things that are a bit different.

I would imagine that could work out quite expensive? My motorhome is insured through the CMC and when I asked if I could add one of my son's on a temporary basis they said they could only do it for the full year which I think was about £90!!! Do you actually need 6 drivers to be on the insurance because the lower number of drivers would keep the cost down. Although I have always insured my motorhomes via the Club many use Comfort Insurance who tend to specialise in motorhome insurance.

Can you leave it to each of the drivers to arrange insurance for themselves  - by urging them to contact their existing car insurer and take out temporary insurance to drive a borrowed vehicle .? Would that work?

I understood it was only possible to insure a vehicle you own.🤷🏻‍♂️

What about hire cars? You pay for insurance on those .... 😉

I insure one of our cars in my name though the V5 is in EmilysMum's name

With hire cars you pay the hire company the equivalent of the insurance cost.

Maybe the technical difference between owner and keeper comes into it?

I only repeated my understanding and didn’t state it was gospel truth so am quite willing for someone to tell it as it is.👍🏻

I would think the registered keeper can insure a vehicle.

Some years ago the towing electrics on one of my Land Rovers went while still under warranty. Land Rover get you a hire car when your vehicle is off the road while under warranty. The hire company Said  the problem was their insurance did not cover towing. I contacted my insurance LV no problem they Said give us the registration of the hire car and it will be insured for towing till you get your vehicle back. They sent confirmation to to the hire company which they were happy with.

You have to have what is called "insurable Interest" to take out the insurance. Hire cars pass this interest on to the hirer through contractual terms whilst retaining full rights for any damage done to the car, ie they get paid out not the hirer.

I cannot insure next doors car as I do not any legal interest in it. If I did insure it and it was written off then the Insurer would have to pay the money to me and next door would have to hope that I gave him the money. Too much hassle for Insurance Companies. The registration and V5 should technically be in the same name as far as I am aware and there was some leeway when I worked in the industry for husband and spouse to mix and match but not all insurance companies felt that way. Can't say what the lay of the land is today though.

Check out Comfort Insurance & their Discover Product.

It has been developed to enable customers to lend their motorhomes & campervans to friends & family.

    Their products are Aviva Policies.

Our car has OH as registered keeper, but it is now insured in my name as he is no longer allowed to drive following health issues.

We also did it before when he inherited his father's car it was insured in my name to build up my NCD.

    It pays to talk 👄😉

Edit - our insurers are and were LV or way back Liverpool Victoria.

As Wherenext pointed out we have an insurable interest. I said I'd pay him any pay out 😉😉

You can take out a separate car insurance policy on someone else's car. Just tell the insurer you're not the owner or the registered keeper of the vehicle when you apply.

you can take out a separate car insurance policy on someone else’s car. Just tell the insurer you’re not the owner or the registered keeper of the vehicle when you apply.

I see you copied that exactly from Moneysupermarket but you left out the next sentence -

It’s worth shopping around though, as not all companies will sell you main driver car insurance if you’re not named on the car’s DVLA registration certificate (DVLA V5C).

Also it may be of interest to note:

In the UK, car insurance for a vehicle you don’t own often costs more than a standard policy because insurers think you’re more likely to make a claim if you’re driving a car that’s not yours.

But not all insurers charge you more to insure someone else’s car, so it’s worth comparing non-owner car insurance quotes from different insurance companies before taking out a policy

I would try a comparison site that does MH insurance so you can compare prices, I would think you could add as many named drivers as you want.

We shop around every year and this year are with Performance Direct, despite the name!

I'm pleased but not surprised, that MSM are of the same mind.  They have some very able staff and knowledgeable advisors laughing.

25 years ago when I was still in the business we dealt with over 40 main stream insurance companies and had access to the Lloyds market.

None of the major companies would insure someone else's car and Lloyds was too expensive and punitive with terms. Things may well have changed in the intervening years but the principles remain the same.

I was only ever asked to insure a motorhome being lent to an existing client for a 1 week holiday. We had to pull in a big favour to get his motor insurer to cover it and they only did it as they covered his commercial business and his Professional Indemnity cover, worth thousands to them.

This is why you have dedicated insurance companies who specialise in Motorhome cover. A lot of mainstream companies even today will not cover them at all.
