I too was wondering where the extra space disappears to!
Could it be that the new HSs are being made a little more generous to take account of wider vans, bigger awnings, and wider cars over the last 30+ years?
Plus allowing a bit extra for Aquaroll and Wastemaster between van and car, better room to open car doors without having 2 wheels on the grass, and even space to peg out awning guylines on the HS?
We have noticed that the newer HSs do tend to be wider, and where that is the case, one is usually asked to keep everything on the HS. It will certainly make grass cutting between the HSs easier.
JVB......it would really be better to give a straight answer if you know the answer!

I will try again then and try making it as simple as possible ?
When the (as advised to me again this morning) grass pitch area of a club site is going to have some hardstands installed it can basically mean the area so selected can lose a grass pitch as when two hardstands are installed, as the space taken up by them can cause a reduction in space to maintain fire breaks
Some sites we have used that before the last fire break recomendations were introduced that were standard white peg hardstand pitches ,are now non awning Sandringham and Seacroft come to mind

It is as posted it is not the grass pitches that are a problem but as I have been told the new hardstands take up some of the space needed to maintain the fire breaks, it may even be as little as less than half a metre per hardstand hence the loss of a pitch
At Seacroft some of the pitches that were White peg are now blue because we were opposite when some pitches were being measured , ,they were half a metre to close so were made non awning ,
problems have also been caused when sites were old school but the size of pitches now is wider, it used to be long ago 10 or 11 metres? as we all know now some think "bigger is better?" with RVs

Clear as mud that I am afraid JV. If 3 with awning pitches fit into an area of grass that ensures all fire regs are met, then 3 with awning hardstandings meeting fire regs will be the same size? Assume the peg is white in all instances, and everyone parks up car, van, awning. Motorhomes may or may not have another vehicle or Toad with them, still on a with awning pitch.🤷♀️
We are talking the starting area being the same size in both instances, grass or HS pitches🤷♀️2 -
So, the club, according to its "Special Scoop Reporter", is going to widen the pitches when they convert them from grass to hardstanding and by doing so will contravene existing fire regulations if they simply replace number for number. Is that right?
If so, then what the heck has it got to do with the Opening Post? Motorhomes won't be inconvenienced by this, except that they'll have one less pitch to get a booking on.
Seems to me the thread has gone completely haywire and SSP (see above) has led you all astray.
I'll stick to CLs thank you.

If as I posted an area of grass pitches is to be "upgraded?" to hardstands as posted but it seems is still not understood , for every three grass pitches at present , when up graded it, then will not have enough space in most grassed areas to replace all the grass pitches
Any clearer ?

No...for the simple reason you haven't said that each replacement hard standing will be bigger than the grass pitch it replaces.
if it isn't, then the same number of pitches will fit.
if it is, then why are they bigger as they did the job before?
replacing 'smaller' pitches with 'bigger' ones is laudable (more room) but reducing pitch numbers isn't something I see the club doing on a whim.
ps....please can you post without putting 'it seems' or 'as posted' or any other expressions that deviate from the matter in hand, it just makes your posts really tricky to understand...thanks

Evening
I have a site safety audit tomorrow which will take most of the day. If I've done my job right it should go smoothly (hopefully). I'm nowhere near perfect but everything out on site will be audited and pitch spacing will be measured I'm sure. If I get chance I'll try and explain what jv is trying to say with the 3 into 2 pitch thing.
There, positive post jv?

I think most older HSs were max 8m wide, many narrower. These days they can be more like 10m.
Pitches at Stonehaven are big, many 10x10m, and on those you are requested to keep everything on the HS. Similar at Banchory. Burford also has large pitches.
Obviously the bigger the HS, the fewer you can fit into a given space.

Not necessarily, if the pegs remain in the same place wont the units be spaced as before?
I can see a larger area might give more space around the van (to cope with bigger cars/vans) but if the pegs don't move, nor will the vans...ergo, same number of pitches but with a tad more space for kit around the van.
you could, in theory, make the whole area a continuous HS but, again, if the pegs didn't move, the spacing (and number of 'pitches') would remain the same.

I meant caravan/MH when I said 'unit'...
a tow car could still be sited in the same place, with appropriate spacing as advised on the pitching instructions, but there would be a little more space to walk about the HS area.
folk don't normally change their pitching habits if one pitch is a smidge larger than another, the pitch to the peg and the other pitching instructions, dont they?

No surprise there

Another thread that I am very late to and I have not read all the replies.
But as a motorhomer and member of 34 years standing (with gaps), I just had to make the point that it has always been well established that motorhomes cannot fill up at service points - other than the dedicated MHSP. I see no reason whatsoever why this should change. It would just be a huge nuisance to others and in many cases it is also likely to block the road ways around the site.
People need to accept simple rules. Too often they don't. I see lots of vans parked incorrectly and cars parked in the wrong place. Recently at Ayr, one caravanner had two cars one of which was partially on the road and outfits had to squeeze past. If he had positioned his caravan in the right place, he could easily have got one car one side and the other car the other side. I find it annoying that wardens make a huge deal of explaining these things when you arrive, but then rarely do anything to challenge those who are hard of understanding and get it wrong. I know I will be accused of pedantry by those who think it is OK just to do what they please, but my view is that these things are important for everyone's peace of mind and enjoyment of the site.
I accept that queues for the MHSPs do increasingly occur; for myself I very very rarely use these as I find it much easier to use a water carrier and pump to fill my fresh tank and a waste carrier to drain my waste tank - assuming I am not on a serviced pitch. Messing around driving to MHSPs, hitching up hoses, and then getting position over the waste drains is such a nuisance I find I would sooner avoid it. It takes long time too which is another very good reason why using any service point should be out of the question.

Having used quite a few newer hardstandings on sites up here, the HSs are bigger and have quite generous grass areas between them, often 3m of grass, some even have hedges, so doing that would certainly reduce pitch numbers if they were being converted from grass.
These HSs are however on more newly laid out sites, such as Stonehaven, or could also be the result of a limit on number of pitches allowed and therefor having the space available to create larger HSs.
Layout is the same.... car.....van....awning, but you have more space for awning guylines and more space round the car than before.
I agree with ET on using the space available, I always park so I can open the car doors with no risk of denting the van. I am still on the HS as requested.
With these larger HSs the peg would not end up in the same place as if it had previously been a minimal spaced grass pitch.0 -
Good to see someone back on the original topic. Not that I agree with: "..it has always been well established that motorhomes cannot fill up at service points...". After all, it was well established for many centuries that the earth was flat. That too was not immutable.
In my original post, I mentioned that I was not blocking up anything, other than the end of the tap, so I didn't see why someone else had priority over me.
BTW: Would the "What's the pitch size?" or the "Lets snipe at everyone" folks start their own thread please, or someone tell me how to stop the activity emails that fill my mailbox..
Whatever, we're off to France on Monday where they look after motorhomes properly.

"Messing around driving to MHSPs, hitching up hoses, and then getting position over the waste drains is such a nuisance I find I would sooner avoid it."
...but some folk with decent sized tanks and using the shower blocks can avoid faffing with fresh and waste water containers and pumps for the duration of their stay...choosing only to visit the MHSP on their way out to fill with fresh water and empty their waste ready for the next site...
seems a sensible solution to me and requires far less "stuff".
