Maximum weight and non C1 licence

I currently do not have the C1 on licence because it elapsed at 70. Is it OK drive a motorhome of say 3650 kg MPTLM if the van is always loaded to a max weight of below 3500kg. In other words, is it the plated max weight that decides if a non C1 driver can drive, or the actual weight of the loaded vehicle. Thanks

It is the plated weight as far as your licence is concernedfrown

A friend of ours had exactly the same problem, and wondered if the MC could be plated lower and was advised by the manufacturer that it would not be possible?frown

You can almost certainly have your van down plated.  I suggest you talk to SvTechA phone call or email will get you all the correct information at no cost.  It will then be up to you to decide how to proceed.

Down plating is fine providing it leaves you with sufficient pay load? Have you thought about getting your bigger licence restored?

I have had, and passed my D4 medical to regain my C1, and my application has been with Swansea for over six weeks, but with their (unacceptable) delays, it may well be many weeks yet before it’s confirmed.  Meantime, I want to order a 3700kg MTPLM motorhome. I am sure I will be OK medically (I am a private pilot and have a current medical authorising me to carry passengers throughout Europe), but as I am 78 in November, I will have this medical ‘Sword of Damocles’ hanging over me every three years, which is why I would be more comfortable with a 3500kg limit..

As I understand the wording on the bit of the D1 application form that you don't send in, if you have had the entitlement in the past and are applying to reinstate it, you can drive with the entitlement while your application is with DVLA (other acronyms are available).

What is the payload of the 3700kg MH?
if it's not well over 500kg (incl a decent amount of water) it will be virtually unusable at 3500kg.

It’s yet to be announced. The basic motorhome is 3500 kg, but with with the additions we want, it will have to be up-plated to 3700, (though the MIRO and payload not yet announced). We currently have a twin axle caravan, that has a payload of 300kg on an upgraded plate, but we don’t get anywhere near that.  Looks like I will have to accept the 3700kg, and keep fingers crossed for future medicals🤞🤞

What MH is it? Is there a model in stock anywhere that can actually be weighed by a dealer?

it's easy these days, they just drive into pads, one axle at a time.

you should be able to get the MIRO fairly easily.

then there is the issue of those extras...what are you having fitted. Solar panels, extra battery, sat dish etc?

then there is the weight of the passenger and the amount of water you'll be carrying, plus bikes (Ebike's?), awning, bbq, tables, chairs, food, cutlery, crockery...bedding, clothes...electrical,items, iPads, chargers, phones, laptops, TVs, Sky boxes

the thing is, when you move to a MH, everything that previously was carried in the tow car AND the caravan has to travel in the MH....incl you (any weight over 75kg needs to be taken into account), passenger, dogs..

the list goes on and the weight goes up...

The ONS said the average man in England was 5ft 9in (175.3cm) tall and weighed 13.16 stone (83.6kg). The average woman in England weighed 11 stone (70.2kg) and was 5ft 3in tall (161.6cm).13 Oct 2010

Alan's (ONS) numbers give a BMI of 24.54 for 'average' men.... nudging the overweight level.

Women at 26.67 fall well into the overweight category.

no surprise in either category there, except that, in 11 years further on, we aren't any slimmer, fitter or lighter.

In that case I'm just about average weight now ... I seem to have lost a stone somewhere over the last year .... 🤷‍♂️

As for 120kg for 2 people .... there are lads at work who are that on their own! 😲

Anyone, even at 6' 2"  (other than a bodybuilder/sportsman type) weighing 120 kg (around 19 st) has a BMI of approx 36 and is literally off the obese end of the scale...

75kg is just shy of 12 st...even at 6' tall, this puts a person at BMI almost 23, healthy.

I am a smidge under 21...all that exercise I guess...

For comparison, Ali was 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m) and  210 lb (95 kg) when he won the HEAVY weight championship in 1964.

I've just put my height, weight & age into the NHS BMI calculator & apparently I'm over weight (& I'm definitely not a body builder/sportsman type) 🤷‍♂️😲

I'm not saying these tables are the be all, they're just numbers....nor is it criticism of anyone, but it doesn't take a genius to see how many 'large' folk there are wandering (many struggling) about (not always wandering, often on buggies)...

folk get large, take less exercise, buy a buggy, take even less exercise, get larger, buy larger buggies...

we live longer, sometimes thanks to medical advances, yet our bodies haven't caught up and let us down....hips, knees and other bits...

so we can't exercise, get larger, buy buggies....etc...

we always seem to run a tad behind America in many things....a look at how things have gone there gives us a good idea of things to come here...

    get shares in buggy companies...wink

I lost 2'' of my waste over past 12 months or so mainly as being less active during the pandemic I decided to avoid snacking of any type.

activity levels for me remained the same as normal for me during the last 18 months ... no such luck being furloughed for any one of us at our house - all key workers 😉
