There seems to be a sudden increase in the rate of thefts of touring caravans in the Dumfries and Galloway area. This is usually a fairly safe area where few people used to lock house doors and cars etc.I am not saying that the main road runs directly to a ferry port or that any particular "group" are responsible. So my advice is to make sure that your caravan is protected in as many ways as possible, especially as there are very few police cars in the area!

There have been a few in Carlisle as well. This usually seems to happen as the attendees of a certain well known annual fair in Appleby slowly disperse over the three weeks or so afterwards.

Just a thought........Most "upmarket" caravans are factory fitted with an alarm system where the unit is mounted to the floor with a hole through the floor, protected by a plastic grill, for the siren.Professionals will know the location of that hole and can simply silence the alarm! If the harness is long enough consider moving the alarm or protect the underside with something a bit more sturdy than plastic!

We had a 4 month old, twin axle van in a CASSOA Gold storage site (cctv, electric gates etc). The van had wheel and hitchlocks, a tracker and alarm. At 02.49, the tracker went mad, and the van was stolen. The tracker and the alarm box was ripped out and thrown on the ground along with the cut off wheel and hitchlocks. The electric gates were smashed down, and the five individuals couldn’t care less about cctv, with their balaclavas and hooded jackets. Two virtually new vans were taken, towed out by Transit vans with no number plates. Police could do nothing, and the van was never found. Luckily Caravan Guard was truly magnificent, sympathetic and very reassuring. They paid out in full in four weeks.  It seems that no matter what you do, if they want it, they will have it.
