CL Price increases

Has anyone noticed any large increases in CL prices?   I haven’t noticed much this year so far, maybe a pound here or there however, just starting to plan for next summer and have come across a nice looking (but nothing special) CL that I thought looked ideal for us and ticked all the boxes with a price of £16 per night.  This price was advertised on both the new app and the website which I know can be out of date.   Imagine my surprise to our email enquiry of availability and price to hear that the cost was now £25 per night 😳.   It certainly made my eyes water!    I don’t believe any CL is worth that much, but what an increase!   Needless to say, we’ll be going elsewhere.

I agree that is a whopper on the face of it, but have they invested a load of money for something like toilets/showers/made up roads for campervans, hard standings, and/or campervan grey waste dumping drain? We like simple CL's with no facilities other than the minimum, but they are increasingly difficult to find. We have heard several CL owners say they have been encouraged by the visiting club inspector to invest in extra facilities and charge more.

We’re the same - we don’t need all those extras but are aware that more and more vanners do.   These minimal sites are harder to find and I do believe that input from the CMC and increased demand from the recent staycationers has helped push prices up, however lots of these will return to foreign holidays at some points so may be less demand for the supply!

I don’t believe this site have added any additional facilities from the listing and the reviews are all great but its such a large increase and pricing us out.   Incidentally, there are another 5 sites in the area, charging between £15 and £20pn.

They're taking the proverbial, Cherokee. Which one is it so that we all know which one to avoid?wink

How many times on here have we been told that the site inspectors have no influence on the price that a CL owner charges!! Wonder who to believe!😁

I used a CL at Monarch lakes, near Boston in September 2019. The standard was high and well worth the money. Nice pub alongside the river a mile or two away. I see that InaD has stayed more recently. If they have kept up maintenance I would happily pay £25

This past year or two, with one exception, we  have been paying no more than £17 for a CL, and that was for a fully serviced hardstanding,  Where we are now is £17, but £20 over winter, and next year will be £18 and £21.

£20 is our max at present, would not pay more for facilities we do not need.

I wonder if the aforesaid CL is preparing to go 'full commercial' or are they keeping pace with the rise in price of CAMC sites and just maintaining a differential of around a tenner?

I can understand supply and demand, improvement in facilities etc, but what is beyond me is why the prices are not updated on the C&MC website. The CL should contact them with any change of details.

Nellie, the owner has said that the books were printed two years ago, which is very true, however it's still a huge increase over two years - possibly trying to recoup losses due to COVID

Anyway for info - it's Swn Y Mor in Gwynned - it's obviously personal choice regarding price, and it does look at nice site.

We stayed at Wortley Hall in 2019 and the price then was £18 a night. I happened to look at their website yesterday and noticed the price has risen to £24 a night. Still well worth it given the general surroundings and facilities available. Given that CL's tend to offer one price all through their season they can appear expensive in the low season but excellent value in the peak where even at £24 a night they are only two thirds of the price of a full fat Club site. There seem to be an increasing number of new CL's that provide all the facilities of a Club site and are starting to charge accordingly. They know that there is a sizeable element of customers out there where price is not the main decision point and those customers want a more intimate site but will all the facilities and are happy to pay. I wonder if the judgement on price, by the owners,  is more to do with comparisons on similar CL's on Social Media rather than the farm down the road with a basic CL?

I agree.  Some sites OH was looking at just yesterday have prices from 2016!

We tend to initially rule out sites with no pictures, no e mail contact and very out of date prices, if others do similar then they could be losing a lot of business.

One of our recently used CLs stated £5 per night on the web site so I wasn't surprised to find it had gone up to £7...and £1 for the dog. There were no photos either but at least a couple of the reviews gave me a good clue about what to expect. So £8 for two of us per night and a family of six near us also at £8 per night. (What a bargain some of these places are!) There's such a range of prices out there and a high price doesn't always mean the site of your dreams. Best to find a site you like rather than let a price inform your decision. smile

If looking initially for a CL near a destination area I usually use Google Maps and search for a CL. If the site has no webpage then it won't be used

I was pleasantly surprised earlier to find that a lovely CL we use regularly, which had crept from £14 to £18 in the past two years or more is now showing £15.

But the club's web site is live all the time, so why don't CL owners press the club to update them when they tell them of their price increases, that is if they bother to do so! I know you can't answer for the site owners but even some of their own web sites carry the wrong information.

Thanks for the CL's name, one that we will avoid, regardless of nice it looks.

Have seen that happen with a site owned by a fairly regular poster on here. However I do wonder if the price shown on BB's site is another "misprint" by the SD publishers?

I'd use Penrallt Bach, about 2 miles away, every time if in the area. Might be expensive at £20 pn but we enjoyed it when we stayed last year. For that price you get Hardstanding, shower and toilet (covid dependent), good views and smashing owners who pride themselves on running a first class CL.

Although it probably doesn't apply to the OP's site, I think that a lot of farm sites are having to look at their 'camping enterprises' differently since Brexit. Goldie may comment, but the impression I am getting from those we go to is that with subsidies starting to disappear, farmers are now having to diversify even more - and what was previously a 'pin money' exercise is now becoming a necessary source of income and consequently they are starting to test the market to maximise that income. I don't blame them in the slightest and indeed, I have managed to persuade one site owner (farmer) we stay with (who is now a good friend) that he was charging far too little compared with other sites we stay on. Add to that the increase in electricity costs and I don't blame them in the slightest.  I would hate to lose such sites since these are the main reason we remain members of either Club

I am increasingly  finding members who say that club sites just aren't worth the money, what with all  the rules, and regulations, and that they prefer  C  Ls. Perhaps the club is seeking to close the gap ?

We look first for the area we want then try to find the CL.  We are looking for electricity, but not for loo or shower.  Hard standing is good.

We are happy to pay £20 for something more than a field plus tap.  It's good when each pitch has water, or there is clearly more than one tap.

I'm not worried about whether CL has own web site, or indeed if contact only by phone - although e mail is easier.

If there is no pictures, then I am very reliant on other reviews.  If no recent reviews (last couple of years) less likely to book.  But if site was where we wanted, a good look at Google maps might help me.

I dont understand why the web site is not more up to date with prices, although I seem to remember that on another thread someone reported owners failing to get the Club to update their prices.

But I'm convinced that the inspectors have been given indications from HO to suggest what price a CL owner should charge, regardless of what has been stated in the past.

Hmm -  can you imagine club CL inspectors going round to the sites and saying  - for example- 'We are expecting you to charge a minimum of £15 per night' so our club site fees do not seem expensive?

I would be horrified to find out that that was the case.

    Hi All

All CL sites are independent businesses, the Club does not get any cut of their profits or nightly rate. The CL Owners choose their own prices and we update our website when the Owner contacts us with their changes in price. Neither the Club or our CL Advisers encourage the CL owners to increase their prices.

We are regularly communicating with CL owners asking them to ensure their details are up to date and to contact us if anything needs amended.

    Thanks

    Maddie
