Yes, you will need your medical first. Then complete a postal application. Do you want/need C1 +E licence entailment also?

I have recently done this - booked a medical through D4drivers, £55.  Pretty harmless medical, 15 minutes of mainly asking questions about previous medical history, blood pressure and vision check and that was it. The doctor filled in the medical form D4, and I enclosed it with the D2 application form - no fee. All very straightforward. The problem now lies with the useless mob at the DVLA with many working from home, it is rumoured to take 10 weeks to get the new licence back. Questions are being asked in Parliament about their unacceptable performance but don’t hold your breath. Leave plenty of time for the necessary licence to return.

I think you will get the CE anyway, which allows you to tow a trailer above 750kg (if you want to tow a small car)

This is my first post on this forum so apologies if this question has already been covered.

I understand that DVLA, normally, write to those who, like me, are approaching 70. (Year’s of age not mph). Can anybody tell me how long before my birthday a letter might arrive?

Theres a possibility I could be away on a long tour when arrangements need to be made.

Thanks in advance for any help.

If I remember correctly, it's 2-3 months before the due date, Boats.

Boats, I received my reminder in early July for my second over 70's  renewal, which was due at the beginning of October, completed it on line on the 7th July and got my new licence back on the 15th. Hope this helps.

Hi Patrick.  You can claim back your C1 part of your licence, but, as has already been said, you will need a medical from your Doctor, and eyesight verification from your optician, if you wear glasses.  Give yourself at least 6 months, if medical conditions are going to need any sort of investigation.  The wheels of the DVLA turn very slowly when it comes to checking the medical side of things..

You should receive a reminder from the DVLA to renew 12 weeks before your 70th birthday.  If you are just wanting your 'reduced entitlement' at 70, you can apply on line and things appear to come through quickly.  If you want to keep your current entitlement and you have 'no medical conditions', you will need a medical (which you will need to pay for).  The process will take a bit longer.  If you have a medical condition, in certain cases, further investigation will be needed.  This will take much longer, so be prepared for a wait.  If your Doctor says you are medically fit to drive, you are probably OK to continue to drive under your pre-70 licence conditions under Section 88 of the Road Traffic Act (for 12 months) but please check this out carefully yourself.

I think you are correct, but the DVLA doesn't seem to be functioning properly at all at present.  I started my "Post 70" process in January with their reminder.  However I wanted to retain my C1E and D1E licenses and so the application had to be submitted in writing.   Their website led me to pages that stated that, due to the pandemic, a D4 form was not required, but I would only get an extension of a year.  I also received confirmation of this process via their web chat service.

When I did that, they then wrote back saying that was not correct and I had to submit a D4 Medical Form (in spite of the pandemic).  I was unable to get a Doctor's appointment for the D4 form until 10th June, which I submitted to the DVLA the next day.

I am STILL waiting for my renewed License and am having to rely on the S88 provisions.  I have tried chasing by email (no personal answer) and tried phoning (just get cut off as too many people are waiting).

I am also presently in Swansea with my caravan.  I am very tempted to visit the DVLA and burn it down !!!

Many thanks for the responses folks. I’ve struggled to gather information for a while and this is the best I’ve found. Things sound a little complicated. Hopefully, if the DVLA catch up with themselves, I’ll get my notification next February.

I will need to get the medical, however an existing vision condition could mean there’ll be a bargain Fifth wheeler on the market

My OH's licence renewal paperwork came back in May. Due to an eye condition she, like myself, have to do a DVLA approved eye test. Nothing has been heard from them and it's now almost six months!

They are probably more concerned about the HGV test backlog at the moment.

It really is a disgrace. DVLA have many of their staff working from home (Unions say it’s too dangerous to go back to the office🤬🤬🤬) Evidently, they claim to be processing applications received in June, so hopefully she will hear back soon. My application went in early August, so heaven knows when I will see my C1 licence back - medical went fine, so should not be a problem.. However, I have ordered a 4250kg motor home for March 2022 delivery, and need to be sure of C1 or I may have to amend to a 3500kg alternative.
