Peg Puller

Recently required a peg puller, but gave up on the ones normally available as more often than not they just bend.

I then came up with the idea of modifying a small utility bar which I bought from Toolstation (other suppliers are available),

I drilled the hole in the flat bar out so that a peg would fit through and then opened up the slot in the bent end with a angle grinder so that it would fit a peg, I now have a peg puller strong enough to remove pegs and putting a spare peg through the hole allows the peg to be used as a handle.

Total cost was £3.19 plus 5 minutes of my time.

'Tis indeed a good idea. I saved myself the extra expense, time and mither however, as I'd already invested 10p (at a boot sale) and purchased a claw hammer which also proved very effective at knocking the pegs in. wink

We carry a regular joiners claw hammer in our van's kit which I use for knocking in steel pegs. Like the original poster, I used an angle grinder to open up the normal nail sized slot in the claw to a peg sized slot. It works perfectly well and cost nothing as I already had the hammer.    smile

An unmodified claw hammer fits my pegs OK.

Another vote for small claw hammer - no need to modify in my case, perfect.

Likewise, a claw hammer does the job for me and of course it knocks the pegs is as well - with a little help from my right arm!

obviously people do use a 'normal' claw hammer but IMHO they're not big or heavy enough to knock a peg into the ground, especially hard/stony ground. I use a 4lb lump hammer to knock them in instead. I made a puller years ago but lost it, so in the mean time pegs are removed by a few knocks side ways & pull/hook them out with AN Other peg.

I've bought all sorts of peg pullers over the years, ranging from the bent, thick piece of wire with a handle version to the all-singing, all-dancing telescopic one that saves you having to bend down.  The former invariably straightens out on first use and the latter was absolutely useless and pulled apart after a few uses and never worked thereafter. Another £15 wasted. They both sit amongst that pile of junk in the garage that I keep meaning to take to the tip!

I now rely on my trusty claw hammer, but like ED, favour a hefty lump hammer for bashing the rock pegs into hard standings.

I always preferred a claw hammer as easier to use. Easier to increase contact speed at the head and far easier on the joints. East extraction with the claw with the design giving easy leverage
