Caravan size, unusual views, did I get it wrong?

Hi all, I've just come back from a weekend away and I was a bit gobsmacked with what someone said.

I have a Trigano 310 pop top caravan, as you'll all know they are quite small but we absolutely love it. It fits straight in our garage. Whilst we were sitting outside someone was talking to us, just general chit chat, and I said I didn't like the roads into the site very small and narrow at times when the other person said " I know what you mean, but our caravan is big, look" there were other little comments made about things we did too,  i have to say I'm offended by people looking down on smaller set ups.  I would never make a comment to make me look better than anyone else. We have had many nice comments about our caravan and people are generally intrigued with pop tops as they don't see many and we often get "wow" comments. But do people look down on pop tops?

Human nature is such that if you have spent a small fortune on a large, shiny new van you are going to want to tell people about it. Sometimes it’s excitement, other times it’s bragging. It’s just the same with buying things for the home - hasn't anybody invited you around to dinner just to show off their new kitchen, suite or whatever?

Been there, done it, now we just think “ who on earth would want to tow a monster like that around?”. We are about to order a very expensive, top of the range motorhome (true). See; can’t avoid it!

Of course the majority of people don’t look down on pop-tops but you were either unlucky or you perhaps took innocent remarks the wrong way. The fact that you posted here about it suggests to me that you maybe took comments too seriously rather than shrugging them off. Ignore it.

Btw, less is more in so many ways👍🏻

I know what you mean, but I've managed to keep smiling. I have a pop top Eriba and have owned one since 2003. They are expensive, but I've always sold mine for more than I paid for. How many owners of a conventional caravan can say that. Also how many can get near to 40 mpg when towing, and that is with a petrol. How many can store there van in the garage at home making it easy to get to and save a fortune on storage costs. Don't worry, keep smiling and enjoy being different.

Your outfit will be unusual in the UK so I suspect that is the main reason it is a talking point. I really don't think that people on Club sites are as you suggest in your original title which could be considered as inaccurate by some. But take heart the payload allowance of your small caravan would put many twin axle vans to shame so there is always a silver lining.

We absolutely love it, and I know that's what matters. Its very easy to tow, no mirrors needed, excellent payload as said and I am very happy its at home locked away in the garage.

Its just the way it was said (tone used) i didn't like it.  I shrug most things off normally but this bugged me.

Eribamotters :  these are not cheap as you said, probably cost more than some full sized seen on sites but I would never say, mine was £ xxxxx . Like I said earlier, most people are very interested and are amazed by them " wow thats bigger than I thought " and how great they open up and how much storage they have. One of our neighbours has a fixed bed eriba, he's just upgraded from another eriba and wouldn't have anything else. I haven't been on site with another yet. Yes I wouldn't mind it being a bit bigger but it isn't and it suits us fine.

I know they're  not everyone's cup of tea, same as there's things I don't like, I was just shocked that someone had said that.

    Thanks for all your comments👍

Just another positive for you. If you still have the van when you change to an electric car the size and weight of it will put you in a much better position than anyone towing a large twin axle. Could be a bit like that old Bob Monkhouse joke, "whose laughing now" smile

I have an 2002 Eriba Puck L and I can only say that all the comments I have received are positive with people being surprised with the amount of interior space and storage for what looks like a tiny van from the outside. Also they hold their value far better than the larger conventional van.

Carry on being different and unconventional and smile at the world

    Cleese, Barker & Corbett:

I have a twin axle, he has a single axle, I look down on him

I have a single axle, I look up to him. He has a pop-top, I look down on him.

    I have a pop-top, I know my place.

I have a fifth wheeler. I look down on everybody.wink

At least with a pop-top, you can use height restricted car-parks and drive Cornish lanes with impunity.
