Alfa Romeo Stelvio
I have been trying and failing to find any information online about the towing capabilities of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The car is stunning, and secondhand values appear quite reasonable. Alfa also appears to have improved its past reliability issues. Weights, economy and performance appear promising. Anybody out there tow with one?

Thanks, both for replies. Vulcan, yours gave me a bit of a surprise until I realised the figures were for the 2 litre petrol, rather than the 2.2 diesel, which is the variant I would go for. The lack of info just underlines that there are not many out there using these to tow in the UK (seem very popular in Oz), despite all major tow bar companies servicing the model.
JVB, historically, I would agree with you, but the latest Alfas are doing better than Audi, Mercedes and BMW on the the most recent Warranty Direct reliability surveys, although not as well as Japanese and Korean offerings. I would though stick an extended warranty on it, just in case!
I am hopeful there is someone in the Club out there who is actually towing with one! It has all the credentials, and given its roots, I suspect the engine in the Stelvio is not markedly different from the new Cherokee, but I am guessing on that one.

In the words of Jeremy Clarkson….you can’t call yourself a true petrol-head until you’ve owned an Alfa.
As for reliability….straight out of the Quentin Wilson style tired old myths perpetuated by people who’ve never owned one and just read it somewhere!

you're right ... I've never owned one, but have never particularly wanted one .... maybe an Alfa Sud of years gone by or a V6 Spider but doubt either would've made a good tow car. Do they make a RWD car? A lad at work had an Alfa something (159?) estate .... he had nowt but trouble with it - does that count?

I'm afraid the asymmetric number-plate offends my aesthetic taste.

I ran a 1982 LHD Spider for a number of years complete with fully symmetrical stick on the bonnet number plate. Fabulous car, but always hankered after a boat tail, Mrs Robinson style 😉

Owned a Sud, GTV and Guilietta in my early days - never once had any mechanical issues, but the Sud was a rust bucket. The new Stelvio has astonishing performance figures for an SUV, and the diesel 2.2 having a towing limit of 2300kg. Kerbweight given as 1934 kg, with noseweight limit of 95kg. I'd have one tomorrow!

Looks like the answer is "no" then! I thought there might be a couple out there.
A bit more research has shown that the maximum permitted tow weight for the diesel is 2300 kg and nose-weight of 95kg, although I have also read nose-weight exceeding 100kg for some versions.
Posts above are probably right. I have rallied (but not owned) an Alfasud ti in the 1980's, also a Fiat Mirafiori twin-cam, both of which were outstanding, but with a reputation for unreliability. My own car in these heady days was a Mini Cooper, which we all rave about, fondly, but which was probably the most unreliable (albeit matched the above for fun) car I have owned, unable to retain either oil or water, other than that which leaked into the cabin!
I am, of course, now a far more aged and sedate version of myself, but the Stelvio is appealing with 2 year old diesels dipping just under £25k,.....the one I fancied has gone, but I remain tempted, but will in all likelihood end up with something more mainstream and boring! I tend to ignore motoring press tow comments. The best tow cars I have had were two of the old shape Renault Koleos, which was panned by the press, but which were as good, if not better than the two Sportages I have had since. The newer shape model (now also discontinued) is probably also better than the press suggest, so that too may feature when I finally change.
