Serious RTC involving cyclist and caravan

As a keen cyclist (and motorhome owner), I know all too well of the co-existance we must all have on the roads.

On Thursday 12th Aug, approx 12.45pm outside of Sherbourne on the A352, a very good friend of mine was knocked off his bike, by a caravan driver pulling into too soon after overtaking. An air ambulance was sent to collect him after he suffered a fractured skull. 

The driver of the caravan has yet to come forward - perhaps he didn't know what had happened!

So please be careful and have patience on the road especially where cyclists are concerned and if you are reading this and were the driver of caravan, please step forward.

    Sorry to hear about your friend. was he wearing a helmet?   hope he make a Good recovery 

    OHs son who is a keen cyclist, and at times commutes to work on his cycle ,has said the one piece of kit he now has is a  camera mounted on his helmet to film bad ,and lack of awareness of other road users

    This has been on our local news and the cyclist has been seriously injured, the injuries were described as "life threatening." The road is in Dorset in the Sherborne to Longburton area. I presume any nearby camp sites will be checked as it's a fairly quiet area, not many vans around normally.

    So sorry to hear this is someone you know ChrisLyn.

    Hope your friend recovers.  Over here in France cyclists have more protection as we have to give them a lot more space and have noticed more wearing helmet cameras, even seen some cyclists with a plastic rod with a little flag on the end mounted on the rear wheel and sticking out into the road to keep vehicles away.

    It is my friend who had the accident and I was only yards away from him when it happened, as we were cycling together.

    I hope either of you had a camera fitted. Might help. You could also investigate if there is the possibility of any other CCTV cameras in the vicinity, it is possible. You are correct in thinking the caravan owner may be totally unaware of what has happened, but if possible they could be made aware. 
    My OH has twice been knocked off his cycle while out riding, it is a common occurrence and needs to be recorded with police and maybe British Cycling, who collect such data. (same for horse riders, via BHS) Sadly, whilst there are some really good and safe cycle routes, sometimes the link roads are still fast and dangerous.

    Sincere good wishes for your friend. Hope he makes a full recovery, absolutely dreadful accident.

    RK, when I had to ride our horse on roads (to join up bridlepaths) I used to carry a long schooling whip. If it rapped on the car windscreen, the were to too ruddy close, and we’re informed of their lack of care if they decided to stop. My OH took out the wing mirror on another car with his stirrup iron....how close was that pass!😡
