Leaving dogs unattended in van

Well, air con or not, noisy or quiet, I still consider it irresponsible to leave a dog unattended in an LV for hours on end.

There’s no need for the undecided emoji, JV. The answer is a resounding "Definitely".👍🏻

It seems that the debate about AC is really nothing to do with dogs so I'm not entirely sure it fits in with the rest of the thread.
Maybe a new thread should be started elsewhere (or, if Harry the Hymer is looking in - something to add to his list of "rages"! )

I’m sorry if my post confused you, JV, but I thought it was absolutely clear.🤷🏻♂️
It was confirming that it is irresponsible to leave dogs unattended for several hours even if they have Aircon.

Totally agree TW - and can I say that I am more than disappointed - that this post - which I started - has been taken over by what I can only describe as a pointless argument about air conditioning in caravans! What on earth has that got to do with what prompted me to make this post in the first place. All I was concerned about was the welfare of that dog - not some “what ifs” that have nothing to do with that. If that’s all some people can talk about then perhaps it’s best if this post was locked.

I think the Aircon was a red herring, Richard, and appeared to largely miss the point of the topic. It seemed an excuse to complain about the noise.

I think there’s a very obvious link between your original post and the subject of owners opting to use air con as a means of leaving an animal unaccompanied. I used an example featured in a recent review to illustrate my point. If you don’t like a bit of lateral thinking to explore broader aspects of an issue, by all means try and get it shut down. Personally I prefer debate to closed minds & censorship.

subject of owners opting to use air con as a means of leaving an animal unaccompanied
How many owners do you know that have done this? You found one review, do you personally know of more? Is it that prevalent?
I can't really remember seeing that many AC units on club sites. Usually MH have them more than caravans in my experience.
And is opting to use AC to leave unaccompanied dogs really a subject? Do dog owners all have AC just in case they want to leave their dog for a (short) period of time? In my time on CT many subjects have been identified and discussed but this is the first I've heard of this one?

Unaccompanied though? I mean left on his/her own without the owners being there or just outside?

OK, so doesn't really substanisaite as Bill's theory/subject as the dog had to be unaccompanied.
And I assume it wasn't a club site, or even over here, so doesn't count for that too

When all comes to all Rich there are 2 schools of Dog ownership-Dog lovers & Dog owners they are separated vastly. A Dog lover would never endanger their Dogs in any way shape or form. If a Dog can’t be with the owners then it should not have been taken away. This is my mindset others may differ I accept that, I would never betray the trust my Dogs place in me👍🏻

On the odd occasion we might leave our dogs inside MH/van, (such as both heading off for a quick shower to save time), measured in minutes, we always turn off the gas, and unplug from hook up. That’s how we keep ours as safe as possible. So to even think of leaving ours for any length of time, and with electrics in use, let alone air conditioning would be unthinkable to us. Simple as that. Dog welfare first.

I had a goldfish once. Wouldn’t dream of posting on a carp keeping thread though.....😁

Given the concerns about physical safety are addressed then not all dogs suffer separation anxiety. Both my Labrador or Alsatian were unconcerned. If you went out without him then the Labrador would wait until you had driven off and take the opportunity to get onto a settee or bench seat and lay quietly. When you returned in the car and opened the door he would be on the floor, feigning sleep and then look up and wag his tail when you entered. I know because of my stopping the car and returning quietly on foot creeping back and looking through the windows before fetching the car

I don't doubt what you say, ET. Whilst we never leave Meg alone in the van, there are the odd occasions at home when we both have to go out for a short while and she's fine - so that's OK. However, that was clearly not the case with the dog in my OP and my reason for raising it in the first place was that THAT dog was clearly in distress - whether through anxiety, heat or whatever - it makes no difference.

While i mainly agree with the conversation. I would like to understand why when i tour in Europe I am allowed to take my dog go everywhere with me without restrictions. Pubs, Restaurants etc... Where in the UK. Dogs are routinely banned and owners forced to sit outside bars with there dog. in raining conditions. The UK is becoming better at allowing dogs into venues, but i have never understood why there is a clear difference in policies between Europe and the UK.

I guess it’s much the same reason as they do many things differently 'over there' and that’s anyone's guess. It isn’t really the subject under discussion here, though.
You may also be interested in the Dogs and Touring thread in the UK section, although your questions and comments are much wider than that as they encompass society as a whole.

I wouldn’t want to take my Dogs in anywhere food was being consumed tbh🤷🏻♂️. There are places Dogs can & should be & places they should not be.

We have noticed that many more UK shops and restaurants /cafes have started to accept how much business they are losing, by not allowing mans/and woman's best friend into their premises
With our dogs and other responsible owners, ,who we have been in conversations with will not use cafes that do not accept dogs even when we do not have a dog ,
This country is slowly accepting a lot of what is quite common in mainland Europe ,
