As our local vicar says, with humans and animals ,the majority of older owners have a dog with them 24/7and the attachment is as strong as with members of their family. a loss is just as traumatic and depending on how their family bond is/was the loss of a pet could well be more traumatic

I know the difference AD. But I also recognise the similarities in caring for someone, or something, that isn’t intelligent enough, or developed enough to be able to look after itself, safely and healthily. Care of both requires compassion, intelligence, patience, understanding, being around to ensure that they aren’t injuring themselves or anyone else, or getting into a situation that could be a risk.
There are numerous studies that have concluded that those who have a pet as a child, and learn how to look after that pet successfully, go on to demonstrate better parenting skills in later life, as empathy, patience, a loving bond, understanding a basic life support needs, (food, water, safe conditions, exercise, cleanliness) are easily transferable skills to the far more complex raising of a healthy, happy, balanced child.
Child neglect, animal neglect. Both legislated. Nice, caring, intelligent people don’t do either. That’s all I meant.

I don't think comparing, or whatever, care of children and dogs is offensive at all. Both require lots of care, love, commitment and responsibility. I've not had a dog but I do think, or it appears to me, that bringing up a dog is far harder than a child.

Totally, 100% wrong and to make a statement like that based on your years ago boyhood experience with one dog explains a lot about the almost inevitable way you jump in on these sorts of threads assuming you know as much as or more than those of us who have lived with dogs for years and years. Every one is different and to pretend otherwise is utterly crass I'm afraid.

In addition as I said I've never owned a dog but do recognise that there is love/devotion between dogs and their owners and that it is certainly a two way process.

In the good old days, or bad depending on your view point, many opened their doors to let the dog out, dog roamed the streets, ours used to go and sit outside the butchers shop, we rescued him from there, and they came home when ready, probably having poo'd somewhere but of course nobody picked up in those days, maybe kick into gutter, not pleasant i know, but today i wonder what becomes of all those poo bags .......dont go there
many were tied to a chain attached to a kennel in the backyard, we did not have gardens, have seen our kennel covered in snow with dog inside, but he was happy.Things are slightly different today and i hold my hand up for doting over our pooch, in the caravan he sleeps between us, we sleep length ways so lots of room, at home he does have his own bed, and never enters our bedroom, never stopped him, just something he does

So far, I have resisted responding to this conversation, despite having started it. But I am appalled at the 'dogmatic' comments I see above. Clearly someone has had a very sad life. I object to being told by someone that has no experience of living with a dog for the last 60 years, telling me 'how it is'. I know differently.
Now, whilst I am reluctant to admit it on here, I have a heart problem - and sometimes I have to go for a lie down. And when that happens - Meg comes and jumps on my bed and cuddles up to me - knowing that something is wrong. That's what 'unconditional love' is all about - nothing to do with food. It works both ways AD - and, sadly, that's something you've never experienced. Your loss, I would suggest.

Our caravan is on our drive all the sunroofs are open and all the windows are open with the night blinds down to keep out the sun. Temperature in the van was 43c and today it was 40c no dog should have to go through Temperatures like that. The owners should be prosecuted and removed from the site immediately. I am a dog owner we never leave ours at all. There other words i could have used but not on the forum

Not quite that hot here, yesterday - but still an uncomfortable 31c in the van - with all rooflights, windows and door open and the awning reduced to just a sunshade. Meg is due at the groomers on Friday, so her coat is about as long as it gets.
She was on her cool-mat and I had the fan blowing onto her and she was OK, but just imagine how she'd have been if she'd been left like the dog that caused me to start this thread. How would a human have felt if they'd had to endure those temperatures wearing a fur coat!

They(the Dog abusers) would potentially kill their Dog & go straight out & buy another one-no doubt blaming its age for the loss. If a person can’t see what an awful thing leaving a Dog in such a confined space in heat is then they need banning from owning any animal for life.

We took our dogs with us to YRP in the Summer of 2018. It was blisteringly hot, so all our “what shall we do” plans had to be amended. Far far too hot to leave inside outfit, even had we been able to have all the windows and skylights open. We had a well shaded pitch as well. We did early and late walks in the park next door, and then split our day up so that one of us was on Site with the dogs, while the other took in various delights in York. Dogs had a mid afternoon walk s well, but were happy just to lounge around sleeping outdoors. We still had a great time, it’s just something you occasionally have to do if you have dogs travelling with you. That or make other safe arrangements for them😁

Anyone that knows the NYM site will know that we are fortunate in being bounded by woods. I was out there, early this morning with Meg for her 'big' walk and if she needs to go out after lunch, it's only a minute's walk before we are in the cool of the trees. It's looking a bit better today, a bit of a cool breeze now and again so I doubt that we will have the stifling heat of yesterday. She certainly seems a lot happier

We're off soon, the dog definitely won't be left in the van and hopefully we can find some cool riverside spots for her in Dorset.
I've totted up that since I was small twelve dogs have played a part in my life, all different and all loved along with the personality traits that needed quite a bit of thought and management! They have enhanced our family life.

Similar here Brue, we have had nine dogs since we got together, mainly Airedales, but a Rottweiler and Labs as well. Mix of pups and rehomed. Every one planned for, trained, budgeted for and much loved. They have all been our travelling companions, enjoyed every moment of being away with us, and we definitely enjoy their companionship and love in return. OK, we might have made a conscious decision not to do certain things, or take certain types of holidays, but it’s always been part of the deal, not some kind of unforeseen issue. It’s not stopped us staying in cottages, B&Bs, hotels, travelling on trains, alongside touring. It’s our decision not to take them overseas, mainly because we can’t be bothered with the red tape, are wary of extreme temps, especially for animals not born or used to them, and enjoy ourselves doing what we like in UK. Our choice. Certainly given us lots of pleasure, exercise, laugh out loud fun moments, along of course with the inevitable heartache every so often. No regrets whatsoever.

As I drove out this afternoon, car saying and remained at 31c, woman dressed in skimpy dress and flip flops leaving the park with a cooker spaniel on a lead. Wonder how she'd have liked walking on the black tarmac Road and pavement barefoot 🤐😤🤐🤐😡

Cooker spaniel indeed😉 Its one of those things a lot of folks forget, just how hot roads and pavements can get. Our lad has had nothing but shady woodland walks these last few days. And a watering can over him to help keep him cool. He’s laid out panting in a draught inside house at moment, hasn’t wanted to venture far at all on his walks. We used to do river and canal walks, but he’s rather wary now because of his eye sight issues.

I was "moaned at when taking Rosa to the off site dog walk ,as I tried to keep her on the grass instead of her walking on the tarmac road, as I passed "to close" to another caravan, there was no other comment when I explained why, and also when we retuned the same way

Cooker spaniel that'll be the jolly old auto correct 🤣🤣🤣. Mind you pretty apt in the circumstances!
Our dog has been driven to local estate, we got a spot in the full shade to park 🙂 for a cool-ish walk through the woods, felt cool when we started off 0730 but not as cool on our return an hour later. Just as we were walking out runner coming opposite way, one of son's groomsmen - he'd run from home and was off on 16k target run today. He's the one that cycled to visit son and family for a couple of hours a few weeks ago - a good run takes 1 hour 20 minutes on the "big" roads. Sooner planes start flying again sooner he'll be more normal 🤣🤣. Said he has 2 flights this month, he's safety pilot on one, just incase anything goes wrong 😱
Dog and OH have just had a trip round the small block whilst I ran the vac around. It's getting very humid and heavy here again. Was hoping for a cooler night but fear it may not be 🥵🥵🥵

With the heat we are having , I would say a caravan is not the best place to leave a dog , even if the blinds are down etc , a caravan in the sun gets extremely hot ! ( Unless you have Aircon ) . On the other hand ....you don't want to take a dog for a walk in 30c heat either ..And no ice cubes

We sold our caravan when the kids got a bit older and set off to see the world which only lasted a few years as the son arrived home with a dog as the man of the house I said no dogs! Anyway while out driving a couple of weeks later the wife pulled up at a caravan dealers "for a look round" the next thing were are sat in the office signing forms and passing over money as I was told it would be nice for the two of us and the dog we now own to go away in. The dog is now 17 years old and is still is first into the car when we go away and he and our other dog are never left alone in the van if we can help it.

Police forced entry to a motorhome in a Truro car park a few days ago to let out a dog left inside for over three hours - even though the motorhome was in the shade with windows open.

I really try not to get involved with dog discussions on here as it seems to bring the worst out of some people. It's obviously not okay to leave a dog for this long. Do people think it's okay to leave a dog for for a short while in a vehicle that has air condition or do people think dogs shouldn't be left at all? of course this isn't for us to judge !! but we can form a opinion. Most owners know their dogs and know how they react to being left. Obviously no one in their right mind would leave a dog for extended periods in a caravan/motorhome but people saying they would break into a vehicle is really worrying, that's surely the wardens call?
