Grass between pitches

We are on a hardstanding pitch, next to the hardstanding is 6m of grass. So we have, car, caravan, awning (on gravel) then 6 m grass. Can I assume that half of that grass is “ours”. I know that the people on the next pitch will park their car on their “half of the grass”.

We put up a 2m deep dog pen on the grass, the warden has told us it shouldn’t be on the grass at all but we could reduce it to Im. It is only 40cm high, our dog is 13, very slow, deaf and almost blind.

What is allowed on the grass between pitches? We had our table and chairs on the grass yesterday, in the shade.

Oh, the grief those grass strips cause! surprised

Assuming you mean the grass is in front of your awning I can't see any objection  to using it for tables and chairs used while you're actually there, especially if that's where the shade is, or for the dog pen come to that. But I wouldn't leave anything there permanently or while out for the day.

Why is your  neighbour's car parked on the grass by the way?

The next pitch is a no awning pitch, and it has a camper van on it.The warden was gesturing to the grass and said if a caravan comes on that pitch they would “need” some of the grass, didn’t hear what he said really.
On a non awning pitch the car is parked on the door side of the van.

The grass strip between pitches is the required firebreak and doesn't form part of either pitch adjacent to it.  As a general rule, site staff will not object to people placing a chair, table or dog bed on it whilst you are on site but nothing of a permanent nature is permitted on this strip and it certainly isn't permitted to part your vehicle on it.

Lady Margarets site near Chirk has some hardstanding awning pitches where the car is parked on the grass strip, as these pitches are narrow and the peg is in the corner allowing only caravan and canopy/awning to fit.

The car goes onto the dividing grass strip which is at a guess about 4/5 metres in width. So car (on grass), caravan and awning on hardstanding.

In normal circumstances with a wider hardstanding that can accommodate all then the usually narrower grass division is exactly that (tables and chairs etc excepted.)

Bit confused by your post to be honest. You say next door park will want to park their car on the grass, yet further on, next door is a camper van🤷‍♀️

I would simply put your chairs, table and dog bed on a bit of the grass and enjoy it, taking all in each evening, or at least back onto the nasty hard standing bit, then simply do same next day. You could use a bit of the dog fence for shade if required, but again take it in each night. The only compromise then is not leaving the dog outside alone, although at 13 and as you say very slow, not likely to wander far anyway, particularly if you use a tie up as well. Explain to the Site staff about hot hard standing being dangerous to a dog (too hot), if they aren’t dog owners, it might not have occurred to them. It does sound as though they have recognised this though, and have compromised to a 1 metre bit of fencing. You simply need to meet each other in the middle, putting the dog’s welfare high up the agenda🤷‍♀️ Territorial “my bit, your bit” situations don’t work on tightly spaced, busy Club Sites. Hope you can compromise🙂

I was similarly puzzled by -

"On a non awning pitch the car is parked on the door side of the van."

Surely that depends where on the pitch the peg is situated and which side the door is.

I think something has been lost in translation here. If the next pitch is a non awning pitch with the peg in the corner the car would/should be parked on the door side surely? I think the confusion may be over what the warden said about  them "needing some of the grass".

Ok thanks, that all helps. We have reduced the dog  pen to 1m. The pen is green plastic mesh with 10x5 cm holes and 40 cm high, so quite inconspicuous.

Everything goes in the awning at night apart from the pet pen.

The warden has had words with a neighbour and told him “ one more word and you are off”

At reception yesterday another  lady went in to complain about the warden’ attitude,( to his wife) and left angry and unhappy.

When I arrived I explained that I had a shoulder injury and could I get some help getting my van on the pitch. Some pitches very tight, I just wanted a bit of support really.

” We have 20 arrivals this afternoon… and I don’t know where he is.”I hoped for something a little better than that.

We had two visitors yesterday, no problem.

Our neighbour asked about visitors and was told  no, so she met them off site. She is not happy either.

Sorry to hear that things haven't been easy. Everything seems more difficult this year, sounds like you have done the right thing by moving the pen. Hope you can enjoy the rest of your holiday!

I know the pitches you mean but, when using one of those, we were told by the site staff that you were expected to park your vehicle across the front of the pitch.

Hi Mylosdad, My sympathy too. A gravel square, half a six metre grass strip, neighbours who are encroaching , a warden under stress, and a heat wave…..that’s not the place to be. Are there alternative sites in the area which would be more comfortable?  Is it worth moving? Good wishes to you.

Much is made of being able to book Club sites without paying anything in advance, but a big downside to me would be having to pay on arrival for whatever length of stay you have arranged. That’s a big disincentive to hitching up and pulling out if you find yourself in the unhappy, uncomfortable situation which has been described earlier.

Stay as long as you like and pay up when you leave suits me fine , but comparisons with other sites in other places get me criticised regularly on here. But even if I had paid upfront for the pitch Mylosdad described I would be off.

And on a club site you could do this and lose just 1 night's fee. Just about any other UK site and you'd lose the lot.

I don't think there's any major site, club or commercial, in the UK where you don't pay in full up front, often several weeks in advance, is there?

It's always possible to move pitch but I suspect with busy sites just now it's not such an easy option. Personally I think a 2m extension of any sort onto the space between units is likely to cause issues. So it's unfortunate but a reality that you'll be asked to move it. If the request is done politely there isn't much else to add. smile

Seems a little ironic that there are lots of people who want more hardstanding's, then there's a discussion, argument, upset, whatever, about the use of a small strip of grass between pitches.🤷‍♂️

Obviously there can be problems but to put it in perspective, in the 16 years we have been members the worst we have had was once at Cirencester. It was nice weather and the neighbours utilised the grass strip to such an extent they had to move chairs so I could open my car door having reversed onto the gravel of our pitch. Basically nothing to really complain about. Hopefully I am not tempting fate.🤞

but comparisons with other sites in other places get me criticised regularly on here

I wonder if that is because even though this is the UK sites and touring section, and talking about a club site, and the fact that we're all stuck here anyway, you insist on often making comparisons with sites abroad. It is totally irrelevant what happens over there in this section/thread as, not least of which, nothing is likely to change.

Also I've stayed on a few sites in Italy where payment has most certainly been taken on arrival, no chance of getting it back if you leave early and sometimes with a deposit too.

It's one of the reasons we invariably opt for a grass pitch W. Just got back from 10 days at the NYM site - on grass - loads of room - plus we could take our chairs and sit in the shade under the trees at the other side of the grassed area.

It's also why we usually stay on CLs and CSs and I wonder if the OP has considered that option so as to avoid all this hassle.

Without doubt, our wisest decision this year has been to avoid usage of Club Sites in busy periods. We are taking two hook up cables with us on a regular basis, that way we can get as far away from others as possible, wherever possible😂

Same here, I much prefer all grass pitches and in recent years i have been using the CC&C network more where it is possible to book a grass pitch.

Indeed great flexibility I agree, but all over there so totally irrelevant to touring in the UK.

Payment on arrival is the norm on many large sites here and I can't see that changing soon (can you?) and so to discuss or make comparisons is totally irrelevant to those touring here or this thread?

Sooo many things are frowned upon at Club Sites. They are a delight if you enjoy camping to orders, most of the spontaneity and adventure carefully sanitised, almost every little bit of effort micro managed. We like to live on the edge a little😁

Our fridge has packed in on gas (part ordered but delivery delayed). We are booked into a no hook up Site next week. It won’t phase us one little bit...... 😉
