Hi everyone

is there a maximum awning depth on standard grass or hard standing pitches? We are looking at a new one which has a depth of 3.6 meters. This would be attached to the side of our motor home.

looking at the Westfield Neptune Air 400

thanks for any advice

Garry

    Hello Garry.

Firstly, to erect an awning, you must book a 'standard pitch with awning'.  Secondly, your motorhome and awning must be contained within the actual pitch.  No part of your outfit is allowed to be on the grass strip which is normally between hardstanding pitches.  This is to maintain the fire gap between adjacent units, which is 6 meters between unit walls and 3 metres between any neighbouring car or awning.

Not all club site pitches are of a 'standard' size though so you'd be advised to speak to the site manager on arrival who could perhaps assist with recommending particular pitches to suit your needs.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi

I'm a club site manager so have experience of your question. Further to advice above I'd advise calling the site you've booked in advance of arrival to discuss pitching arrangements. Not all pitches will take a 3.6 meter deep awning so a chat with the site should hopefully be fruitful.

Why would anyone need to have a 3.6M wide awning? Surely the standard 2.4 or 2.5 ones are adequate for just about any normal camping?

If its a drive away awning they do tend to be much deeper due to the tunnel between MH and Awning. Some of them are massive and trying to fit them onto some pitches can be a challenge.

Ideally every gravel hardstanding, or area of grass would be a minimum 6 metres from its neighbour. This would enable you to site your MH anywhere within its boundaries and you wouldn’t have a problem. However, they are not and with a 3.6 metre awning you would have had problems on most of the pitches we have used this year, and that’s 11 to date. That’s not to say there were not  pitches available where it would have been possible, as we only have a wind out, so weren’t really looking. If the site is fairly full and choice is limited finding a suitable one could be difficult.

Obermuckle   I think you will find the awning in question is 3.6M in depth.

Depth? Width? Length?  It protrudes 3,7M from the door side of the vehicle. Standing at the front of the pitch, one would see a vehicle about 2.4M wide with an awning protruding 3.7M in width. (6.1M in total)

This is a case where having the standard configuration on a pitch as Car, Awning, Car would simplify things. As long as everyone parked their caravan/motor home on the left of the pitch all would be well with bigger awnings.

If you mean Caravan, awning, car then that would not suit me. Although I have a canopy I would not want to be sitting outside in very close proximity to the side of my car.

Car, caravan, canopy/awning suits me fine but I admit to siting caravan slightly right of the peg so the car is clear of the grass finger allowing nearside doors to open fully on some pitches.

We've been on pitches where the car has to be parked in front of the caravan (not my favourite) we struggled to even get a porch awning on that pitch. So even a MH putting the size of awning up as suggested would not be able to.

Another concern the OP should consider is the weight of said awning. Air awnings are not light and they tend to be bulky. This will have to travel somewhere in the MH and could be an inconvenience, the weight should also be taken into account as could put a light MH over the allowed weight. On another forum I'm on a number of MH owners have bought Air Awnings only to sell them off a short time later as they are quote "too much trouble"

Trouble with that is anyone with a European doored caravan and no motor mover, would end up stepping out onto the grass strip and have acres of space on the non door side.

That is true but this could happen on a non awning pitch. It doesn't take much to spin a caravan on its axis unless you are infirm or its a double axle.

What is the standard size canopy awning for a panel van size vehicle?

They come in various widths to fit different sized vans. I don’t know the depth/extension, although Google probably does, but they don’t have to be unwound to their max.
