Speeding Survey

I've just read the report in The Magazine of an on site speeding survey carried out in 2019.

600 vehicles were checked with a speed gun and 50% registered at over 8mph. Does that mean that 50% were within the legal limit. From my experience this year I think not. However more alarmingly 8 people registered at over 25mph.

The article ends, "Your safety and wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do". That begs the question, 1) what happened to those 50% 2) what are the club doing about it.

There was a sign put up in the door to the shower block on a site once that said a complaint had been made and any further speeding drivers would be told to park in the car park.

Seacroft was the location of the most outrageous example of speeding I have ever seen. I think the relatively long, straight roads (compared to many sites) tend to encourage it. Not, I hasten to add, that that is any excuse, of course.

Like Harryb I am surprised that 50% were within the limit (or a small margin above it). But much would have depended on how well hidden the speed gun was.

    Well done to those wardens.

The problem I can see with that is the car parks wouldn't be big enough

    David

Unlike you I do spend quite a few nights on CMC site but otherwise I tend to agree with you. You are sometimes aware that the odd vehicle seems to be going fast compare to others but I can't say I have been particularly bothered by it, well at least not bothered enough to either mention it to the warden or write about it in a review.

Do we all know what speed we are doing whilst driving on site? I suspect few do as it's not much use relying of what gear you are in or the speed on the dash. Just out of interest I have just looked at my dashcam footage of the last site we were on. I imagine the speed indicated is reasonably accurate as its via GPS. My speed varied between 1 and 9 miles per hour. My average was probably within the 5 mph stipulation. Obviously we should encourage everyone to keep their speed down but equally we need to encourage them to look where they are going as I imagine and accident is more likely to happen from lack of concentration than the actual speed?

In my view cyclists are probably the biggest speeding problem.  Especially kids on bikes going the wrong way.

Bridlington has quite a few long straights, particularly on the new bit. I don’t know what speed they were doing as I wasn’t really paying that much attention. However, it was difficult to ignore the noise of some caravans and quite a few MH’s, as they launched off the road hump close to the end of our pitch. Clearly the drivers were not paying that much attention to what was in front of them and if they were concentrating on their Speedo, I doubt it was showing 5mph.

I think any decent driver worthy of holding a driving licence will know the difference between 5mph & 15mph. I’ve driven on roads overseas & I’m struggling with believing all natives of other countries drive with care & respect-in fact I know they don’t🤷🏻‍♂️

There is a site we visit in the Loire that deals with such a matter perfectly. Just outside reception as you drive in is a chalkboard where the registration number of offenders is printed large and clear.

I recall one culprit complaining at reception and demanding his name be taken down. Things got a bit heated and the site owner eventually politely told him stays there for the rest of the day and if he did not like it either don't speed or leave.

I think drivers of commercial vehicles use second gear because first gear is so low and do not realise they are "speeding/"as the design of some binanclesmakes it dificult to read also the higher you are siiting it does not look fast?

I think you will find when when you watch a vehicle you can only judge what speed you think it is doing. You might think it is doing 15 mph some one else might think it is doing 20mph and another person thinking it is only doing 10 mph.

I live off the main Preston Blackpool road and when joining the traffic on the main road I have lost count of the times I think a car is going really slow and when I pull out behind him he is doing 30 which is the speed limit. Point being it is not easy to judge the speed of another vehicle.

Personally I can't accept that the 'circular' design of club sites, which to be fair is the norm on many UK sties, can be a valid excuse or possible reason for people speeding on site. It is clearly signposted, on the roads, in reception, information rooms, even in some toilets blocks and dishwashing areas and often your are reminded on booking in as well as on the back of the site plan leaflet.

People can hardly miss what the limit is.

It is simply down to driver error at best or just some thinking it doesn't apply to them. I should think there should be some sort of warning and sanctions. On the site I posted about upthread that notice was the results of people telling the wardens.

From the back of one leaflet:

For the safety and enjoyment of everyone
on site, please keep your speed down. The
speed limit on all sites is 5mph; that’s 1st
gear. Pedestrians always have priority over
vehicles when crossing site roads. Please expect
that young children may move around your
vehicle carelessly, because they have little
understanding of road risks, and adapt your
driving technique to allow for this.

I saw this once on a club site in 1997. It was Notgrove in the Cotswolds, now Bourton on the Water. The warden told me it was effective. I wonder why it wasn't adopted.

Interestingly we are now 24 years on and the club still let speeding happen

How many who moan about speeding have actually mentioned it to the speeder? i saw on one site a member had a large 5mph sign facing the traffic flow surprised

it is very noticeable very few seem to speed past site staffs compounds undecided

Would it be worth the effort. Traffic accidents on campsites don't even appear on the BiA campsite risk list; slips trips and falls do.
