Calor Gas Shortage

I don't know if this has been flagged up by anyone yet but just a heads up. There would appear to be problems sourcing replacement Calor Gas tanks in the UK for the foreseeable future.

Having emptied my 6kg tank I reverted to my emergency 13kg tank on the motorhome only for that to run empty before I had the chance to replace the 6kg tank!  T o be fare the 13kg has been onboard for 5 years so hardly surprising lol!

However, the site I'm on has no gas at all but kindly gave me a list of alternative local suppliers. Ernest Doe, was the largest and nearest supplier so off I went with my 6kg to get a replacement only to be told I had no chance of getting one.  Calor just cannot deliver for some unknown reason.  Luckily I took their last 13kg tank so I should be okay for a few months.

So probably a good idea to research where you are travelling to and check on availability....just in case!

Seems everything is in short supply. Cement, timber, now Gas.  Why after all these layoffs?

It has been posted before it seems that when calor started withdrawing the 6kg lite cylinders without any replacement ,and the big in increase in LVs in the Uk has caused a shortage of calor cylinders, with no resolution it seems for the forceable future

I understand the less well known gas supplier's may have stocks as there is not a shortage of gas

We managed to get an exchange from our local supplier/dealer who I hope was looking after their own customers first but they told us that the problem is a shortage of the bottles not the actual gas.

Many trades people are reporting shortages of materials as they come from overseas.  We've been waiting nearly three weeks for some paving stones.

I wonder if it is due to Brexit, Covid, a bit of bother or neither?

I dont usually need much but the Dometic fridge has stopped working on 240v and I am now hunting around for refills

Surely you could fix the fridge?   Sounds like the element has gone. Plenty on e-Bay.     x

Apparently, due to everyone staying at home demand in 2020 reduced supplies and increased 2021 orders are still trying to meet requirements.

(We're still waiting for a new kitchen floor, think it's about three months now!)

Probably.  Have a look by removing the outside vent panels.

We changed to FloGas a few years ago, and got 2 x 6kg propane  bottles locally last week no problem, our usual supplier.  Mind you, their website stated they were out of stock, but on ringing them they said they had quite a few.

I’ve heard that enterprising folk are cutting up the 6kg cylinders and selling them as fire pits/ barbecues. Obviously the deposit has been set too low if this is profitable.

I am not so sure they are right David, I have just been to the local Morrisons which is supposed to sell LPG and their pumps have a sign saying out of order. This is the second garage which has had these signs up the other being a Shell garage which we know have stopped selling LPG. Is there a shortage of LPG or are Morrisons also abandoning the market?

They had them all, butane & propane all sizes. I swapped a 4.5kg butane for a 6kg propane. I looked on the calor site and it said if its in the same category, it can be swapped, but I have also heard that some places won't do this. Another place near me doesn't. I went to a local camping seller today and they had a few in, admittedly I didn't look at sizes as I have mine. smile

Two days ago I exchanged a 6Kg at Go Outdoors, no problem. With their discount card it was a lot cheaper than the local caravan dealer.

I have contacted 18 Calor dealers within a 45 mile radius of where we live and the shortage seems to be global.  One dealer commented that getting 6Kg bottles was like getting hold of "hen's teeth".  Caravanning will grind to a halt at this rate as we all run out of gas.  Does anyone know of a site where we can rub two sticks together ?

We have a 6kg calor lite on since early 2019 and it still has some left ,it is showing green on the gauge and ,we normally do over 200site nights away per annum, so unless you do a lot of non ehu sites,  we do nil ehu site stays ,and use minimum gas unless of a power outage (very rare )

As posted by others the shortage of 6kg calor is not Global?,it is a combination of 6kg lites being withdrawn and the big  increase in LV sales and staycations wanting more gas cylinders

Our local calor supplier is still waiting for a delivery. We managed to find one bottle this morning at a builder's merchants, they wouldn't hold it for us so OH has just dashed off to get it. We are going on a rally soon so a gas supply is needed. Other than that we'll be conserving gas usage from now onwards. frown

I have temporarily reverted to it due to the fridge issue

Any luck looking behind the vents to fix the fridge yourself . . ?
