When is a BBQ not a BBQ?

We've had a couple of lovely trips away in the caravan over recent weeks, but we've noticed a growing trend for, 'stealth' campfires. People seem to start off with a barbecue,... Nothing wrong with that, but once they have finished cooking they chuck some logs on to create, basically, an open fire.

I realise the ambience of an open fire can't be beaten, but we were smoked out on the last occasion. Probably damp wood. It needs  less than 20% moisture to burn properly. Drier than the average caravan.

I reckon there should be more signage on site to remind members old and new, that burning logs, coal etc is not allowed on site. Or is it just me?.

You only have to note how many do not "notice" the signage ref masks and max persons ,and some are already ,complaining that club sites have to many signs,, unless the site staff notice ,or members are prepared to  say anything ,then those who do it will not stop the practice, how many are keeping to the 5mph ,or one way systems

As always the first port of call in any case where anyone has concerns are the wardens.  I would have thought the evidence of these open fires would be still there the next morning?

    And no it's not you.

I agree there are many rules to remember but, personally, that's the attraction of club sites.

It can be tricky approaching someone to complain baring in mind you could be living a few metres apart for a week or so. Maybe I'll just give it a go politely and hope for the best. Thanks for your replies.

    Happy travels

I have to admit I'm getting a bit "notice" blind, everywhere you look there are more written notices thanks to Covid. My memory and reading abilities are being stretched!

The no open fires bit has been around for years but there are a few privately run sites which allow it. So some might assume the rules are the same everywhere.

Yogibear, it's something to mention to the site managers as it is a fire hazard.

That's not to say that they are right though, just because they do it "over the water".

Edit. I should have said "over the pond", so as not to be confused with "over there".😁

One site we were recently on, the owner would rent you a Wheel barrow for £10. It was full of nice dry logs and something for you to start the fire with.

These were very popular with some on the site, they would take them down to the beach and have a bit of bbq and warm.

It was understood that the remains of the fire were to be brought back to the campsite and the beach left clean and tidy (site owner was ex Plod)

I don't think I would like open fires on campsites, especially after seeing how some folk pitch with wind breaks going from one outfit to another. Of course this was not on a C&MC site.

Designated areas would be preferable. We've just returned from a week in the lakes and witnessed another stealth fire and another very non stealth fire pit drifting smoke across the site. Wardens were pretty good in dealing with it.

Maybe pictorial signs dotted around, required?. Bring back public information films....
