Just a bit of advice when you are thinking of renewing your cover
If you dont have home cover included in you package I would seriously consider including it as the extra is far less than if need green flag to attend as a one off call
It has just cost £105 00 for them to attend to my car that had a puncture 20metres from my home address the problem was that after several attemps i could not remove the locking wheel nut ,also the technician that arrived couldnt get off either so the car has had to be recovered to the local garage . and it will be about 4 days before it can be removed plus now the tyre is completly distroyed

For years I have had the basic cover but problems with my car battery earlier last year persuaded to go for home cover. I had not even thought about wheel problems but now glad that I have a more comprehensive cover. Also as I get older I am less able to resolve some problems that I once took in my stride so good advice.

For the last 5 years or so, we've gone for Personal Cover. It means that both Carol and I are covered in any car (as drivers or passengers), at home or away from home. It's a little more expensive but worth it for us. Last year it cost us £132.50 for the two of us.

I pay Green Flag themselves (not Mayday) £61 a year for full UK cover including cover at home .

That sounds cheap, I pay £137 for comprehensive cover, but that does include personal cover for any vehicle and any driver. Most of my call outs have involved problems at home so, for me, definitely worth including the cover.

Eurotraveller, if you tow a caravan then check the small print about differences between Green Flag and Mayday. A caravan if not attached to the broken down tow vehicle might not be recovered. Mayday also does two way recovery which is of benefit if you break down on the way to your holiday as opposed to on the way home.

Although good value that is not like for like. Mayday includes double recovery / drop off and no size restrictions on the caravan. Which I believe is limited to 7 metres long on their non Mayday cover. Our Unicorn Cadiz was 7.34 so wouldn’t have been covered.

Thank you Steve - though what you list is not relevant to me personally. I have never had a caravan over 7 metres long, I don't want double drop off, I just want a breakdown fixed, I don't caravan in the UK any longer and an ordinary Green Flag policy can be extended at minimal cost for overseas cover - but Mayday cannot.

A few years back, prompted by a significant increase in my travel insurance, I opened a Nationwide Flex Plus account.
It costs £13 a month and includes UK & European breakdown cover.
I got it for the worldwide travel insurance which, looking at the prices quoted here, is costing me about £20 a yea more and there is mobile phone over as well.

I don't think £130 a year for specialist recovery options for two vehicles is too bad. Had I not opted for the "home" service it would have been even cheaper. You can always find a product that is cheaper and for those that do good luck but given that most of us pay for this type of service in the hope we will never use it most will want to be covered from all angles, particularly if you have a problem whilst on holiday in the UK.

For Green Flag cover as compared to Mayday, they will cover any caravan not exceeding 7 metres excluding the A frame. Covers most vehicles i think and having used them, they are to be recommended. If your van is larger than say 7.4 metres then Mayday makes sense

As a motorhomer, the benefit to me of the Mayday cover through the Club is the specialist lifting equipment service, as I found out last October when returning the MH to our storage location post lockdown after a period of torrential rain.
We pulled up onto the grass as we had done for the last 10 years (in all weathers), tried to reverse into the barn and promptly got bogged down in mud ! Don't you just love front-wheel drive MHs
There wasn't enough room to pull the MH out of the mud with our 4WD so a phone call to Green Flag was required. A short while later, a heavy recovery vehicle arrived and set up a winching pulley system and we were freed in no time.
I shudder to think how much that would have cost had I not had Mayday. We too have Personal cover which covers the MH, both our cars and any private vehicle we are travelling in - a bargain at £132.00 pa.

I too have personal cover which of course covers both our cars and caravan and so I thought that I would never need home start as if one vehicle was not mobile we could use the other one ,.dam locking wheel nuts was our achilles heal the mechanic said that they caused problems on most PSA made cars and recommend that we fit new ones at a cost of £25.00 so will do asap

Yes, a very common sight on campsites. It’s amazing how little mud is required to stop a MH in its tracks. All that weight and tiny tyres isn’t a good combination on grass. Many swear by cut down bread baskets as an aid to getting out, but they take up quite a bit of space.

Just arrived in the post this morning is our Mayday renewal same price as last year, have had a read of updated? small print and it advises that if outfit breaks down on journey to campsite you Will be taken to destination , and car to be repaired ,followed by Or take you and your vehicle back home if cannot be fixed , I would think it should say and rather than or?
You no longer can claim the £10for late arrival of engineer?
And they will not attend if the trailer weighs more than the weight of the empty tow vehicle?

I think taken to destination only counts if you have pre-booked a pitch. Something I'd guess most of us do most of the time.

I consider home cover essential.
We once went out to our car a couple of years back and the front tyre was flat.
No problem I thought, I would just change it rather than call Green Flag to save them coming out.
Wheel bolts came out no problem but could I heck remove the wheel. It was seized solid to the hub.
Man with big rubber mallet from Green Flag sorted it quickly.
Apparently it's quite common in newish cars that have not had the wheels removed since manufacture.

My Mayday policy is due for renewal soon but I decided I would go for a higher level and include Homecall. I phoned the number shown on the letter from CaMC which took me through to Greenflag. I increased the cover and they duly sent some paperwork to me. This paperwork welcomed me to Green Flag Breakdown Cover but had no reference on it at all to CaMC or, indeed, to caravans or Dual Recovery which is included in the Mayday policy. I immediately phoned CaMC who gave me a number to ring, - the same number that I had phoned to increase my cover. I phoned the number again and explained the problem to which I was told that "sometimes the wrong paperwork gets sent out". Not exactly efficient. I've been told to expect the correct paperwork in the next 7 to 14 days. We'll see what comes.
It would have been so easy to just file it away thinking that my Mayday cover had been both renewed and upgraded. Beware !

Some car breakdown policies won't cover you if it's your caravan that is at fault, such as a caravan tyre blowing and shredding the wheel arch making it impossible to be towed any further. Mayday will cover this eventuality, when most policies won't as they only cover you if it's your car that's at fault.

Time was changing a tyre for most was an inconvenient rather than a disaster. Nowadays if you’re lucky enough to have a jack it’s flimsy at best and figuring out where the jacking point is isn’t always easy. Get it wrong and you’ll be shelling out for body work repairs. Grovelling around underneath the rear or in the wheel arch isn’t much fun either. A Ducato spare wheel hurts when if drops from its cradle onto your hand! As for those inflating repair aerosols - good luck with that!
A job best left to the professionals wherever you are including home.
Also, a non-starting or immobilised vehicle needs good access to be recovered. Some of us like to tuck our vehicles away at home making recovery difficult. Another situation when you’ll value professionals attempting the job and home cover!

Ours is in the garage, so also very easy to remove. However, it is very heavy. When I was younger I would certainly have changed it myself but now I think there is a real chance of me putting my back out. ☹️That plus they are getting £130 a year.

We are the same. Occasionally wondered if it's worth it but always decided it was.
OH and MiL went away on a river cruise in Germany 2019. MiL was 86 at the time. Added her to the insurance. Price? £20.
Actually used the breakdown service today, unfunnily enough, and the service was fast and effecient.
