Towing Covers

I was thinking of buying a Tow Pro Elite towing cover to protect a new caravan. It looks as though it should be good, easy to put on and use, but then it should be as it’s quite pricey. I used to have a Protec TC, on an earlier van, but it was always a faff to put on with all its straps.

I read somewhere that some makes of towing cover can absorb a lot of water in wet weather and could therefore compromise nose-weight.

Anyone any experience please?

We have towed our now six year old Bailey ,thousands of miles on UK roads without a cover, and unless we have been really lucky ,without so far any damage, ,then with a quick rinse down with water, if a mucky journey

If you are concerned about the weight I would ask the manufacturer for dry weight and wet weight of their cover.

We used a cover some years ago and also found it a right pain to use,  especially when touring and therefore moving regularly.  Ever since, I have fitted our cars with mudflaps and experienced no problems other than very tiny marks, even on long trips to Italy and Spain. I would save your money

Thanks! I never bothered for a while with one, but then had a cracked front window.

Living in Shropshire I also got very tired of the local farmers’ contractors depositing much of their fields and slurry onto the highway. Start a trip with a nice clean van and literally within a mile it looked like a midden all the way to your destination. And cow poo is so difficult to remove once baked on by the summer sun. 😳😫

    The joys of country living!

On the flip side we've always used a Tow Cover and quite surprised when others don't - their choice of course but I always feel better protected. As an example we were driving back from Oxon Hall towing our brand new caravan when there was a road closure near Whitchurch. The diversion wasn't ideal but we managed it ok. It had been raining earlier in the and the tractors and also been in full swing on the country lanes. Thank god I had the tow cover on as it protected the front of the caravan from all the mud and stones. It really did look like we'd been on an off-road adventure. We took it off to reveal a nice new caravan again and the cover cleaned back up very easily.

We have a Tow Pro+ from Specialised Covers and it fits like a glove (made to measure for your specific van). It only takes a couple of minutes to put on the caravan. It's not cheap but gives you piece of mind and great protection whatever is thrown at it.

    Oh yes, how familiar!

what is it about the farming fraternity? It is illegal to deposit mud all over the roads but experience in this county, including Whitchurch, is that they don’t give a monkey’s. While having a filthy car and caravan is an annoying hazard of living in rural Shropshire, my sympathies lie with the motor cyclists whose lives are severely at risk because of the slime on our roads. Politicians don’t care either of you complain.

We towed thousands of miles through Europe over 30 years and I only recall once seeing a towing cover. It was a Brit (of course) and didn’t believe in travelling more than 100 miles a day. Takes all sorts I guess. Fact is, it won’t make any difference to the price when you come to sell it.
