Did the “Glorious 12th” materialise?
After all the hype about packed camp sites and long traffic queues resulting from the easing of lockdown on the 12th - I’m wondering if it actually happened. The CS we are currently on has been virtually empty apart from us and I know our next door neighbours (at home) got in at Burton Constable - a big commercial site near Hull - for the weekend, and it was only a quarter full.
Comments here suggest closed toilet blocks are putting people off - or sending them to other sites that are breaking the rules and opening facilities.
Just wondered if this was a Yorkshire thing or was it happening elsewhere?

We were on Fakenham racecourse site from 13th for 4 nights, booked because they stated they were allowed to open toilet block before the CMHC gained the clarification to do so. (Presumably because they classified as a racecourse not a caravan site - the toilet facilities are part of the grandstand building.) Hence we booked it a few weeks back.
It’s a fair sized site but I would estimate the occupancy rate was only 20% at most.

C&CC at Salisbury was about 50% initially but continued to fill up as the week progressed. Probably about 70/75% by the time we left Friday. We were the only occupant of the non EHU pitches at the lower part of the site.

An interesting post as I wondered if sites were going to be busy as well. Perhaps many people are now back at work so cannot have the time off or they have children who are back at school. Others may not want to travel too far away as they would have to come back to have the jab or their second jab. I decided to retire last year, so I now have the freedom to go for longer trips but, although I don't mind staying a few days without the use of on site facilities, I will wait until the toilet blocks are back in use before I book for longer than a few days away.

Well they must be going somewhere! Roads into the Southwest shown on local tv on the 12th, long queues. Devon very busy already. By 10am last Saturday the usual summer heavy traffic and queues locally, with many caravans and motor homes heading back home.

Lee on the Solent was busy at the weekend, most car parks were full, now very quiet, cycled the shore route to Gosport Marina yesterday and very few folk about, but then fortunately or unfortunately depending how you look at it, we do not have your golden sandy beaches, many are pebbles interspersed with a few sandy patches, but my sand castle days are over so ok for me.

Thank you Ian and JV66 for that information. I should have checked up on the latest information via the internet, but I very naively assumed that the CMHC would send an e-mail out to members to advise them about something like that (as well as putting it on the internet). Note to self: When it comes to the CMHC, never assume anything!

I wasn’t aware that toilet blocks could be open and neither was the owner of this CS because he’s turned a lot of enquirers away because the toilet block isn’t open. That may be his choice, though.
It’s possible that coastal areas are more popular at the moment. We live within 5 minutes of the beach and when we popped home on Saturday after Ros had had her jab (because I’d forgotten a few things!), we had to queue for a mile to get into our little seaside town.

I don’t seem to have seen that JVB but I’ve just checked the C&CC website (the applicable club in our case) and it’s very confusing. Toilets can open but not showers and then it talks about ‘bubbles’ etc and the fact that facilities have to be cleaned after each use but doesn’t distinguish between toilets and showers. Then it goes on to say that since all their site facilities are shared they have decided to keep them closed for the time being. I don’t understand any of it apart from the last bit! Perhaps I’m being dim

All good at Plymouth Sound, not busy so lots of room to enjoy the views. We're moving elsewhere tomorrow. Last minute fix to shower tap valve thanks to Screwfix! Everything needs to work for a comfortable stay when there are no facilities on site like this one.

The Email was received at 15.08 on the 9th April and was English sites specific opening on 12April advising that shared toilets and washing and cleaning facilities but not showers would be open

As a post script to my earlier post, the C&CC at Salisbury was predominately motorhomes by a ratio of about two to one. As many caravans generally have more spacious bathrooms than motorhomes, are caravaners more reluctant to use them?

I think it depends on the site, for example how good is transport from it? I would think town sites would have more MHs?
Heard from somebody staying at the Troutbeck Head site that it was busy midweek but close to full over the weekends. It was a 70/30 split for caravans but then that site is 15 miles from 'anywhere' and necessitates taking your car/MH off site.

We have noticed in recent years that sites near good transport links and or close to "shops/eateries, seem to attract motor caravans without other means of transport the site we are on now is about full and motor caravans out number caravans. ;although four are American RVs, There is an excellent bus service and two nearby railway stations

There have been four caravans/motorhomes on site each night at the Cl in Suffolk where we have been staying since the 12th. We are the only one to be here the whole time.

To be fair we all pay the same, we don't all use service points, we all have to keep things topped up or emptied, some vans have much less capacity and space than others. If we go away, we're paying to stay on a site, the facilities aren't the reason for going away but useful for some when available.

Lovely here at Ferry Meadows😁 West side (mainly hard standing, looks like a car park) is busy, but East side, big grassed bays, a few hard standings it’s nice and quiet. Guess where we are😂
Loo blocks are open, but think most of folks away here aren’t bothering to use them. No showers. Lovely to be on grass, much nicer for sitting out.

Certainly was the case for us. We only tended to use the caravan shower when on a service pitch. The MH is much more user friendly, with 100 litre tanks that can be driven to the service point. However, we didn’t have a caravan during covid. If we had I think we would have made an exception and used it more, even on standard pitches.

It's possible, surely (though admittedly quite a generalisation) that MHs are more likely to be owned and used by older couples (I use the term with the greatest of respect
) more able to "up and go" and families with children more likely to be caravan users. So, although some folk may have been discouraged from using sites by the lack of full (shower) facilities it might be this is more of a factor. Nothing to do with caravanners per se being less inclined to use their own facilities?0
