Caravan Storage/Insurance
Hi,
Just bought a new Swift Sprite Super Major 4SB. We are currently trying to sort out insurance and we have a couple of options for storage.
One is is a well secured site with large gates/cctv etc. This is an hour and a half away.
The second option is just down the road from us, however there is no security at all. It is a small plot of land with a fence around but no lockable gate, no CCTV etc.
A couple of questions,
Would the second option be classed as a storage compound on the insurance? Even though it has no security and is just a small plot if land being used for caravans?
What would you do? High security/further away or zero security (except usual security devices) / just down the road?
Many thanks

When you take out the insurance you will have to specify the location and if it has any security rating, CaSSOA bronze, silver or gold. This will affect your insurance premium. Personally I would opt for the high security one further away, otherwise, particularly in the current climate, you may well not own it for long. Although it will be less convenient and cost more, this will probably be offset by a lower insurance premium.
Is there nowhere any closer? Even if full, they normally have a waiting list and it would be worth getting put on it. We waited 6 months for ours and actually took it on a couple of months before getting the van. So although there would be extra cost, you could move it closer when something becomes available.

Hi Steve,
We have put ourselves onto a waiting list, for a secure compound down the road from us, so down the line we hope to end up in that one. There are three vans ahead of us. I think I will go for the more secure facility, further away.
Many thanks for the advice.

I don't know where you live, but that matters a lot.
Here in rural Cornwall where I sometimes forget to lock the car overnight, or even the house door, insurance companies don't seem worried that we have no neighbourhood watch, no security at all, and that for 40 years I kept caravans with only a hitch lock in place in an open fronted shed behind an unlocked gate fronting on to a public road.
Other places are different.

With the caravan, it was CAMC when it was insurance. The MH is Comfort, both wanted to know where (post code) and what quality the storage compound was. Do you store yours in a compound? I assume it is different for anyone who keeps it at home, as they know the post code where it is stored already.
edit sorry quoted wrong post, meant to quote yours above dt.
