'Wild camping' in a motorhome or van

There is no way any of us know there will be 'baddies' amongst the club members, Nellie, but I think it unlikely that anyone so uncaring and irresponsible in their pursuit of a free holiday would bother to fork out the £54 membership fee.
There still are trolls posting on here but I'd not equate that with dirty camping.😐

And of course people who went abroad in the past couldn't possibly have been CAMC members? The two were mutually exclusive?
And putting that to one side, these people's first choice when the find they can't go this year is to join the CAMC?

Hi OP here,
Just to be clear - l definitely didn't imagine the existence of the signs in the car park and don't need to post photographic evidence. It doesn't take too many brain cells to know that vans covered in frost, on levelling wedges with silver screens on had been there all night.
I wasn't in any way suggesting that they were leaving rubbish or waste behind, only that they were doing the wrong thing by sleeping in that particular carpark.

Well I did say putting that to one side (the point about the two being mutually exclusive) that doesn't in any way answer my second point, which is why these people who go abroad with their units when they find they can't this year suddenly want to join the club?

If it isn't discouraged I presume more will disregard the rules?
Trials down in Exmouth, Devon, allowing overnight parking have had mixed results. Mostly in regard of the care people took eg social gatherings, bbqs, noise and disruption etc.

It is what i posted earlier in this thread ,LAs and National park authorities can put up as many signs as they want to to discourage those looking for Freeby stopovers ,and they are well aware of the places they can , and also where they will get moved on, by staff employed to enforce the no overnight camping signs,

Actually I did think that they thought club sites would be the same quality as their abroad sites. Rightly so of course
Or they may be following your example and lead and thinking just like you? You are an experienced tourer abroad yet you have posted that your first port of call is to book club sites, which you have done I recall?
Just your example of course and as you say not a scientific survey of course so cant provide audited data but I find it interesting to think others are perhaps doing the same when faced with 'exile' over here?

OH has just reminded me of a conversation we heard when at a cafe with friends in Penarth South Wales ,it was between two M/C owners who were talking and one was telling the other where to overnight, as after 6pm there are no carpark people around and they never come round untill after 10 00 in the mornings

dont consider myself to be a Euro tourer, not unless you consider ambling back through France to the ferry after spending a couple of months in Spain to get some additional sunshine, I say additional, just now we should be ambling down thru France to take up station in Spain, but it is glorious here and my daughter says it is dreadful in Spain and will be for the next week or so, sorry got sidetracked, but I seldom revert to club sites over here if at all and we do normally holiday in the UK Sept thru Oct, simply because very very few have the facilities I want, simple, but i take your point, there are those on here who continually knock club sites but gallop to book them as their first choice in the UK when overthere is a no no ....

When/if you get another Moho JV will you be stopping your constant attacks on Moho owners & start slapping Caravanners or will you just calm down re the attacks?🤔

It was your Keep Britain Tidy message that gave me an idea for a hook for my post. Perhaps I should have made it clearer that it was not a direct response to you post

There are motorhomers who have come up through the ranks of this Club and still follow all its procedures - make a booking months ahead, stick to correct arrival times, park at the correct distance from the peg, keep the roll out canopy furled if the peg is the wrong colour, and so on and so on.
And there's another sort of motorhomers who are never going to do all that, because they want to be free of it - and who can blame them - they look at the weather forecast, travel spontaneously. and stop well away from a campsite. I can show you some of the casual overnight spots where they stay in Cornwall and I am not troubled by that . And if they want to stay overnight at the top of Kirkstone Pass that doesn't trouble me either.
If I were younger I would be with them.

Was that an answer or you doing the ‘JV fudge’?🤷🏻♂️. If you are bailing from your earlier musings it’s not a crime, I realise time is not your friend👍🏻

Your first paragraph appears to imply that they are forced to go through the ranks (btw it's not the army), forced to go to club sites and are forced to follow the on site rules.
...and I am not troubled by that... same for me providing it is legal and they keep the place tidy. I assume you mean the same?
... Kirkstone Pass that doesn't trouble me either.
but the landowner has put signs up saying this should not happen, or are you advocating they can park on private land whenever they like?

Very good point EuroT but this is most relevant
"If I were younger I would be with them"
when you and I were younger there were not the number of MH's/campervans on the road as you see today, nor caravans of course, and yes i can remember in my tenting days in the Lake district seeing campervans parked in gateways etc , and we thought it was all jolly good fun. Today some places are awash with MH's and they are highly visible when doing what they should not be doing and lots of people now think they are all doing what they should not be doing

I can see that some have not personally seen some of the camping styles which are going on. A few "careful" rule breakers leads to a crowd of not so careful users, not just motorhomes. If you live in an area affected by casual street camping or an AONB it's a problem.
Maybe some of the cheaper pop up sites this year will soak up some of the excess?

We have loads of quiet, tucked away little pull ins filed away. Most are very out of the way, up where few Motorhomes and even less caravans would ever venture. But at the moment, wouldn’t dream of using them as it’s become a plague, and we don’t want to be seen as part of that plague. We will picnic in them, spend the day in them, but come down and use a legitimate sleeping spot where we won’t be considered a nuisance.
To me it’s double standards. Lots of folks consider travellers who pitch up anywhere to be a nuisance (and from personal experience, yes they can be). But big Motorhomes, camper vans, lined up all along seafronts are just as much of an eyesore for local residents, and it doesn’t take much before the less than well behaved odd one turns things sour for everyone. I imagine paying a huge sum of money for a nice house by the sea, and then someone coming and parking a big slab sided bus slap outside my front room window. I know I wouldn’t put up with that for six months of year, so why be so selfish and do it to anyone else? This is why some places are becoming no parking for visitors, North Berwick is a classic example. Size restrictions for anything parked up, all day, every day, because a few spoilt it for everyone. Marazion seafront, another one. Footpath totally blocked all Summer by tourers staying weeks at a time. All gone now, LA got fed up and barred everyone, put a cycle path in.

I don't understand this inference that wild/free/dirty (delete as appropriate to you) is only suitable for younger people?
A number of posters on here have said they have changed to a MH as it was easier than towing and additionally surely parking up for the night is the same by the side of the road as it is in a campsite? What is the difference?
1 -
I think the difference is that, as we age, our sense of vulnerability kicks in. We start to think of the 'what ifs' and appreciate the advantages of having other people around us. Some may call that being sensible and acquiring sense with age, others will consider it wimpiness and over caution. Whichever it is, I think it explains the changing attitude that age brings.
As for LLM's statement that age is just a number, I think we all realise that's far from true. Without wishing to be a doom monger, age brings medical problems and we've been told of several posters here being the subject of cardiac problems and blue light runs amongst other issues. Just a number? I wish!
